During an interview with The Project on Sunday, Bono admitted it's "still a sore subject" as he spoke about their close friendship through the years.
He revealed that both Ali and David were in the year below him in school and described them as "the two cleverest in their year".
Bono then said: "She [Ali] did seem to be taking an interest in his guitar playing and, as hard as I might practise, I just knew I couldn't touch this guy.
"So I had to become, you know, the class clown."

The song references the 1972 Bloody Sunday shootings in Derry, where members of the British army's Parachute Regiment opened fire at civil rights demonstrators.
Bono said: "I used to introduce this next song by explaining that it wasn't a rebel song.
"It was because believing in the possibilities of peace was, then and is now a rebellious act, and some would say a ridiculous one, to believe peace was attainable between your country and ours, between our country and itself was a ridiculous idea that we're pleased we hold on to very tightly right now.
"Peace creates possibilities in the most intractable situations. Lord knows, there's a few of them out there right now.

U2 jointly condemn Israel over Gaza as Bono admits his past statements 'circled the subject'

U2 HAVE CONDEMNED the Israeli government for their actions in Gaza, as Bono admits to 'circling the subject' of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the time since the 7 October attack. In a series of lengthy statements posted to social media , the four members of the band individually set out their stances on the war raging within Gaza. 'Everyone has long been horrified by what is unfolding in Gaza – but the blocking of humanitarian aid and now plans for a military takeover of Gaza City has taken the conflict into uncharted territory,' the post of their statements was captioned. 'We are not experts in the politics of the region, but we want our audience to know where we each stand.' Bono's statement, which covered ten slides, admitted that he had circled around the issue of speaking out on Israel's actions in Gaza. Condemning the 7 October terror attack by Hamas on the Nova music festival in Gaza, he reiterated that he believes in Israel's 'right to exist' and a two-state solution. In recent years, Bono has attracted heavy criticism over his silence on Gaza. Last year, he angered a number of his peers when he accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom from then-US President Joe Biden. Actor and musician Steve Wall was among those who slammed Bono's decision to accept the medal from Biden , who was the subject of opposition and derision over the US facilitating Israel's war on Gaza. Advertisement Bono later went on to defend his decision in an interview with Brendan O'Connor on RTÉ Radio 1. He said that he had a longstanding relationship with Biden and had accepted the medal of behalf of activists and people being killed within Gaza. In May, he called for Israel to be 'released' from Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu at an awards show. Today, Bono wrote that he had felt he should focus on poverty and the humanitarian crisis occurring within Africa, and said that he felt countries like Sudan were overlooked in their suffering. As Israel intensified its attack on Gaza, Bono said that he reminded himself of Hamas's crimes that had preceded this. 'I hoped Israel would return to reason,' he wrote. 'I was making excuses for a people seared and shaped by the experience of the Holocaust… which understood the threat of extermination is not simply a fear but a fact.' He said that he understands that 'Hamas are not the Palestinian people', who have undergone oppression, occupation, and 'the systemic stealing of the land that is rightfully theirs'. He added that he can see the parallels between the historic occupation of Ireland and the occupation of Gaza: 'It's little wonder so many here in Ireland have campaigned for decades for justice for the Palestinian people'. The U2 frontman said that the band condemns Netanyahu's Israel government. Shorter statements from the three other band members took the same stance. Bono's contrasting relationships with Noel and Liam Gallagher explained

Liam and Noel Gallagher have both openly talked about their relationships with Bono – with Noel describing the U2 frontman as his 'dearest' pal, while Liam calls him a 'w****r'. It appears the Gallagher brothers didn't share the same friends down through the years. In 2023, Noel described Bono as 'one of his dearest friends'. Leading onto the discussion about his friendship with the U2 singer, Gallagher began by reflecting upon his time meeting with another rock legend, Bruce Springsteen. According to the musician, he met The Boss by chance while they were both in Ibiza and ended up spending the afternoon together. 'Bruce is an amazing dude and I was lucky enough to meet him a few years ago,' he told Shuffle at the time. 'I had lunch with him and his wife. There were a few of us, we were all out in Ibiza and we randomly bumped into each other and we all ended up spending the afternoon together… and he was an amazing, amazing guy,' he added. 'I won't say I was a huge Bruce Springsteen fan, but I've definitely got the utmost respect for him. He was great, just like a kid into music.' He continued, going on to say that they eventually decided to poke fun at Bono's fear of missing out by sending him a photo of the moment. 'We were sat at this long table, we'd had a few bottles of wine and there's food everywhere and we took a selfie with each other and [Springsteen] said, 'Should we ruin Bono's day?' And we sent him the selfie,' Gallagher recalled. 'And, of course, Bono – you might not know this – has got a crippling fear of missing out. And his wife called me and said, 'When you sent him that photograph he couldn't handle the fact that you two were in Spain having the time of your life and he wasn't there'. Jade Jagger with Bruce Springsteen, Calvin Klein and Noel Gallagher during a holiday in Spain 'Then Bono was asking, 'What were you talking about?' [So] I said, 'We were fucking slagging you off!'' Gallagher also described Bono as 'one of his dearest friends' and explained what it was like to go on tour with U2. 'He gets a lot of flack, but I fucking love him,' he said. 'I've been on tour with him and, do you know what is amazing about U2? When a band gets to that level, usually your entire operation is run by Americans. U2's operation is entirely run by Irish people, all of it. It's like a mass exodus when they go on tour. It's like there was a bigger exodus than there was during the Famine.' Noel Gallagher and Bono (Image: (Photo by David M. Benett/)) 'There's fucking hundreds of them,' he added. 'There's about 300 Irish people on tour, it's unbelievable. 'I'll tell you what, I was on tour with them for the best part of a year and I have only just recovered. It was really great fun, they are really great people and I love them dearly.' In 2021, Noel said he thinks he knows why some people don't like Bono. Speaking to Hometime presenters Andy Bush and Richie Firth, Noel said: 'I've said this to him, so I'll say it to you, nobody likes a do-gooder, nobody likes it. That's why people like me, I'm a do-badder.' Noel admitted he gets frustrated with people who say they don't like U2. 'I'm like, 'No, what you are saying is you don't like Bono.' It's like you're not telling me you don't like one single note that they've ever done. It's rubbish, it's nonsense.' He said the first side of U2's 1987 record The Joshua Tree is 'like (the Michael Jackson album) Thriller'. But in 2018, Liam Gallagher described Bono – and his brother Noel – as 'f***ing knobheads'. Speaking with Australian site Junkee, Liam responded to the story that Sacha Baron Cohen told about the time he threatened to stab him at the GQ Awards. Bono and his wife Ali Hewson lunch at the club 55 in St Tropez with Noel Gallagher and Sacha Baron Cohen in St Tropez (Image: Xclusive Pix) Liam said at the time: "He was trying to bring me into the fray and that. I think he's more one of Noel's mates, he's over on Bono's side," adding that he reckoned Cohen was a member of the Illuminati. 'F**king knobheads, all of them," he said, claiming that Bono was "the biggest wanker". When pushed to name his 'top five wankers in music', he said: "Noel Gallagher, Bono. It's just them two at the moment who've got under my skin. They can just f**king table tennis it back and forth.' In 2022, Liam criticised U2, claiming the band 'aren't remotely rock 'n' roll'. He told Loudwire: 'I mean, not all of them are [useless], but the majority of them are. 'The ones that think they're rock stars are not, they… just live a very boring f***ing life and I think rock 'n' roll deserves a little bit more than just making music, you know what I mean? You gotta get out there and get yourself – you just gotta live an exciting life. 'It's like U2, they pass themselves as a rock 'n' roll band, but what the… ? Come on, man, I've never seen f***ing Bono, I mean I've never seen any of them do anything remotely rock 'n' roll.' Liam Gallagher is not much of a U2 fan (Image:) Gallagher said U2 should have got 'into a bit more naughty stuff' if they wanted be known as rock 'n' roll. He said: 'Without a doubt, I think [it's about] attitude. A lot of people will go, 'Oh it's all about music'. But I disagree, I don't think it's all about music. Obviously you've got a certain degree of, your tunes have gotta be decent enough, but I think attitude goes a long way. 'But, people just think that rock 'n' roll kind of sounds a bit silly and a bit stupid, but it means a lot to me. I'd rather be that than f***ing some politically correct f***ing idiot.' This was not the first time Gallagher has criticised U2. In 2017, he said he would rather 'eat my own s***' than listen to 'beige [those] f***s'.
