
Dubai telecom operator du reports 19.8% net profit increase in Q1 2025
Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company PJSC (du) reported its financial results for the first quarter of 2025, marked by robust growth in both revenues and profitability.
Total revenues increased by 7.4 per cent year-over-year, driven by solid performance across both service and non-service segments. EBITDA rose by an impressive 15.0 per cent supported by improved revenue mix and efficient cost management, resulting in an exceptional EBITDA margin of 47.4 per cent.
This operational strength translated into a net profit increase of 19.8 per cent, underscoring our continued momentum and financial discipline, according to a press statement released by the company today.
Fahad Al Hassawi, CEO commented, 'We started the year with a very strong first quarter, delivering growth across all key financial metrics and making meaningful progress on our strategy to diversify revenue streams as witnessed by the strategic partnership with Microsoft to develop a hyperscale data centre. The resilient UAE environment coupled with the quality of our offerings and our ability to respond to evolving customer needs contributed to the solid growth in our subscriber base with our mobile base now exceeding the 9 million mark and our revenues witnessing a remarkable 7.4 per cent growth."
He added, "We also achieved a strong margin expansion, with EBITDA margin rising to 47.4 per cent while net profit grew by 19.8 per cent, reflecting disciplined execution of our strategy and effective cost management. Our balance sheet remains robust supported by strong cash generation and the continuing normalisation of capital expenditures in our connectivity business, enabling us to strategically expand into high-potential growth areas. We have reiterated our guidance, highlighting our confidence in maintaining this strong momentum throughout the year.'
According to the company's statement, Q1 revenues grew by 7.4 per cent year-over-year reaching Dh3.8 billion with growth in both service and non-service revenues primarily driven by the strong macro environment in the UAE, our ability to gain market share, as well as our sustained focus on high ARPU products and mix improvement.
Q1 Mobile service revenues increased by 7.4 per cent year-over-year to Dh1.7 billion driven by the growth of our customer base, improved mix and enhanced ability to capture demand for higher ARPU products through higher offer personalisation and data driven Customer Value Management, as well as some non-recurring revenues.
Q1 Fixed service revenues rose by 10.2 per cent year-over-year reaching Dh1.1 billion mainly driven by the higher fibre penetration and the continuing success of our Home Wireless product and Enterprise connectivity solutions.
Q1 'Other revenues' grew by 4.8 per cent year-over-year to Dh1.1 billion driven by the expansion of our ICT business as we continue to seek new revenue streams beyond our core business. The growth was also driven by higher in-bound roaming revenues supported by higher tourists' inflow and higher interconnection revenues reflecting our higher mobile base. This was partly offset by lower handset sale mainly reflecting a phasing effect, with Q1'24 handset sales benefitting from a pull-forward in demand due to supply constraints in the prior quarter, resulting in a higher comparison base.
Q1 EBITDA grew by 15.0 per cent to Dh1.8 billion, with an EBITDA margin of 47.4 per cent. The strong revenues' growth, improved Mix, increased ARPU, lower handset sales and lower authentication costs, as well as the positive impact of the non-recurring revenue items resulted in higher gross margin. This was coupled with improved collections performance and our continuous focus on operational efficiency and strong control of indirect costs.
Q1 Net Profit witnessed a 19.8 per cent growth year-over-year to Dh722 million, representing a Net Profit margin of 18.8% reflecting the strong EBITDA performance and positive interest result.
Q1 Capex was at Dh377 million (Q1 2024: Dh359 million), a capex intensity of 9.8 per cent (Q1 2024 capex intensity of 10.0 per cent). Our core investments remain focused on 5G densification, enhancing indoor coverage and expanding Fibre deployment, and we will further allocate capital to continue developing our ICT activities. We will also continue improving our infrastructure and transforming our IT systems to further enhance the quality of our network and elevate customer experience.
Q1 Operating free cash flow (EBITDA – Capex) increased by 17.9 per cent to Dh1.4 billion, mainly driven by EBITDA growth.

Is AI the culprit in new wave of tech job losses?
Thousands of Africans are among tech workers who have lost their jobs this year, as hundreds of companies move to trim their workforce — an upheaval many have blamed on the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI). Last week, global software giant Microsoft announced retrenchment of three percent of its workforce – about 6,000 employees – across the globe, describing it as a move to optimise resources. But Microsoft is not alone. So far in 2025, at least 75,463 tech workers have been laid off globally, as 317 companies announce redundancies, according to tech talent consultancy and tracker TrueUp. Other major firms that have let go of staff this year include Google, TikTok, Amazon, Chegg, Electronic Arts, Meta, Intel, Canva, Hewlett-Packard (HP), AutoDesk and eBay, among others. While none of these companies has explicitly cited AI automation as the cause of their layoffs, many observers have pointed to the technology's rapid proliferation as the underlying threat – one that could jeopardise millions of jobs across the world. Yet experts in the industry view the concern differently, dismissing it as an overreaction to a shifting digital landscape.'AI cannot replace a developer. But an AI-proficient developer can replace another developer who has refused to embrace AI,' said Caleb Nyoiro, director of Zone 01 Kisumu, a training centre for tech workers.'I think it is now cliché to say that AI is replacing developers. Still, the impact will not be entirely painless. Yet surprisingly, most professionals are not alarmed. A study published last month by the Pew Research Centre found that while 56 percent of Americans are 'extremely or very concerned' about AI-related job losses, only 25 percent of AI experts share that concern. The same study revealed that experts are far more optimistic than the public about the opportunities presented by AI. While they do worry about issues such as misinformation and digital impersonation, they express far less anxiety about AI-triggered job displacement. Even global financial institutions have dismissed blanket job displacements by AI. Investors see US stocks rally broadening, even as 'Magnificent Seven' rebound
NEW YORK - Megacap technology and growth stocks have retaken U.S. market leadership in recent weeks, but investors say that factors are in place that could allow a broader group of stocks to outperform for the rest of the year. After technology shares led by a small group of stocks known as the "Magnificent Seven" drove equity indexes higher in 2023 and 2024, much of Wall Street expected a broader swath of stocks to do better this year. After stumbling in early 2025, the Magnificent Seven have stormed back amid an overall rebound in equities fueled by easing trade worries. The group, which includes Microsoft , Meta Platforms and Apple , has accounted for over 40% of the S&P 500's <.SPX> total return since the close on April 8, when stocks began to recover from U.S. President Donald Trump's jarring April 2 "Liberation Day" tariff declaration, according to Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P Dow Jones Indices. The tech trade got a fresh boost on Thursday as shares of Nvidia , another Mag 7 company, gained 3% after the AI chipmaker's sales beat quarterly expectations. But investors say more enticing valuations and an improving earnings backdrop are poised to allow strong performance for a broader group of stocks, as long as the economy avoids significant hiccups in the coming months. Coming into the year, "we were pretty poised to see a broadening of market participation," said Michael Reynolds, vice president of investment strategy at Glenmede. "We think that's a story that's still relatively intact, that the rest of the market's earnings growth can actually be relatively competitive to some of these megacap tech companies and be supportive of returns through the rest of this year." The U.S. market has shown signs of broadening its gains. The top-performing S&P 500 sectors so far this year have been industrials <.SPLRCI>, consumer staples <.SPLRCS>, utilities <.SPLRCU> and financials <.SPSY>. After lagging badly the prior two years, the equal-weight version of the S&P 500 <.SPX> -- which represents performance of the average index stock -- has performed more in line so far in 2025 with the standard S&P 500, which is market-cap weighted so the larger stocks influence it more. More recently, however, the Mag 7 have outperformed as they did in 2023 and 2024 when they accounted for well over half the S&P 500'S 58% two-year return. While the S&P 500 has gained over 18% from its April lows, an ETF covering the Magnificent Seven -- which also includes Amazon , Alphabet and Tesla -- has surged more than 30%. A strong first-quarter earnings season in general helped lift the stocks, which as a group had sold off particularly sharply earlier in the year over worries about the artificial intelligence business landscape, and economic fallout from Trump's sweeping tariffs. Indeed, even as Nvidia reported another blockbuster quarter, the maker of AI chips did warn of more risks to its business emerging in the technology conflict between the U.S. and China. With the rebound, valuations for the Magnificent Seven have also become more elevated. The group's median price-to-earnings ratio as of Wednesday was around 28 times earnings estimates for the next 12 months, after falling as low as 22.2 in April, according to LSEG Datatream. The S&P 500, including the Magnificent Seven, was at a P/E of 21.4. Michael O'Rourke, chief market strategist at JonesTrading, said the megacap stocks have benefited recently as investors have been "chasing exposure" to equities on better-than-expected tariff news by buying funds covering indexes such as the S&P 500, in which the stocks have heavy weightings, or by buying the stocks themselves. "It's easier to just go for the index or go for the larger names in the index because they're liquid and you can quickly add exposure that way," O'Rourke said. However, he said, there are a lot of other large-cap names trading at "much more attractive levels." "The headline-driven trading has to subside," he said. "When the market is less focused on trade and geopolitics, that will allow broadening to re-emerge." To catch up, the rest of the S&P 500 may have to close the earnings growth gap with the Mag 7. In 2024, Magnificent Seven earnings grew 36.9% against a 7% increase for the rest of the S&P 500, according to Tajinder Dhillon, senior research analyst at LSEG. This year, the gap is expected to narrow, with Mag-7 earnings rising 15.9% against a 6.5% rise for the rest of the index. "All the earnings growth was in those big Mag-7 names, and we have started to see a broadening in earnings growth," said Chris Fasciano, chief market strategist at Commonwealth Financial Network. Commonwealth is recommending investors diversify their equity exposure, including to the financials and industrials sectors, as well as to mid-cap stocks, Fasciano said. Still, Mag 7 stocks could retain their popularity if Wall Street grows concerned about a significant economic slowdown, having become somewhat of a defensive play for investors in recent years. Their businesses are expected to be relatively resilient to the broader growth environment while investors are also drawn to their general financial strength. Indeed, stable economic growth will be especially critical for economically sensitive areas such as industrials, materials and financial stocks. "Better growth is going to be the trigger for a more sustainable broadening out and participation," said Garrett Melson, portfolio strategist at Natixis Investment Managers.
