Kashmir parties condemn Israel's attack on Iran

File photo: J&K CM Omar Abdullah (Picture credit: ANI) SRINAGAR: Political parties in Kashmir, including the governing National Conference, condemned Israel's attack on Iran on Friday, saying 'the silence of influential countries like the US on this issue is alarming'. J&K CM Omar Abdullah said Iran had not provoked Israel in any manner to justify its offensive and this amounted to waging war against another nation. 'What Israel has done is very similar to what Russia did in Ukraine,' he told reporters here. 'The world raised its voice against Russia and launched campaigns condemning its actions. But when Israel attacks Iran, global powers, including the US and European countries, remain silent. If it is wrong for one country to invade another in Russia's case, then it is equally unjustified for Israel to attack Iran,' he said. Omar said there would be immediate repercussions of the attack. 'It affects our fuel prices, impacts the stock market, disrupts flight routes to the West, and more importantly, it stirs public sentiment.' Slamming Israel, NC MP Aga Ruhullah said: 'Iran, like any sovereign nation, now has every right to defend itself and take full, punishing revenge. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The Zionist regime should pay for its crimes in Gaza, for its bloodlust, for its massacres.' PDP president Mehbooba Mufti wrote on X that Israel's attack is yet another brazen act by a state that 'appears to have gone rogue'. 'The silence of the global community, particularly western powers led by the United States, is both alarming and telling. This silence amounts to tacit approval. In the case of India-Pakistan tensions, the US never fails to assert that its intervention has been crucial in preventing escalation. Yet, when it comes to Israel's relentless bombardment of Gaza or its latest strike on Iran, that same urgency is conspicuously missing,' Mehbooba said. She said equally disturbing is the 'deafening silence of the so-called Muslim countries, who remain shamelessly non-existent in the face of such grave injustice'. People's Conference's Imran Reza Ansari said the 'calculated act of aggression of Israel is not merely a political provocation but an assault on the very ideals of justice, sovereignty, and intellectual resistance'.

At Rs20.21cr, NMC hikes civic poll budget by a record 167%

Nagpur: With the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) functioning without an elected general body since March 2022, the civic administration has steadily increased its budgetary provision for holding the impending 2025-26 civic polls, earmarking a record Rs20.21 crore. This allocation marks a significant 167% rise over the Rs7.56 crore spent during the last civic elections held in 2017 and a 242% increase compared to the Rs5.90 crore spent in 2012. The enhanced provision also reflects a 68.4% jump from the Rs12 crore NMC used to routinely set aside since 2021-22. However, with no elections announced until now, the civic body was diverting the earmarked funds towards providing basic amenities during mid-year budget revisions. Municipal commissioner and administrator Abhijeet Chaudhari, who presented a Rs5,438.61 crore budget for the 2025-26 fiscal, increased the provision anticipating State Election Commission (SEC) announcing the long-delayed polls this year. The new poll provision accounts for about 0.37% of NMC's total budget. A senior official from NMC's election department told TOI that the steep hike in allocation was based on the expected cost escalation due to inflation, increased staff deployment, technology use, polling logistics, and more polling stations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cervecería Nacional CFD: Calcula cuánto podrías ganar invirtiendo solo $100 Empieza a invertir Inscríbete ahora Undo "In 2012, the civic polls cost Rs5.90 crore which jumped to Rs7.56 crore in 2017. Considering the rise in operational and administrative costs, Rs20.21 crore has been earmarked this time," the official said. The govt has now ordered ward delimitation, reviving expectations of elections after three years. Once delimitation is finalised, the SEC is expected to issue the election schedule. Civic activists have welcomed the increased allocation but warned that elections must be held without delay. "This year's enhanced poll provision shows the administration is preparing seriously," said a source. However, the election department has a staff strength of only four officials. Even though election procedures have already commenced, the civic administration is yet to increase the manpower required for the election process. Sources said the department needs at least a workforce of 20, including computer operators. An official privy to the development admitted the shortage of manpower and clarified that the manpower too would be enhanced in a couple of days. Bawankule meets protesting Bachchu Kadu, Cong backs his stir

Nagpur/Amravati: Guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Friday met ex-MLA Bachchu Kadu at Amravati and urged him to end his indefinite fast, which has continued for six days now. On Friday, the Congress also threw its weight behind Kadu's ongoing agitation for farmers, just a day after NCP (Sharad) MLA Rohit Pawar drove down to the Amravati protest site where Kadu is on indefinite fast. Earlier this week, Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange, and ex-minister Anil Deshmukh too met Kadu. Bawankule's visit to Kadu is seen as an important development as the monsoon session of the legislature is scheduled from June 30. Congress state president Harshwardhan Sapkal said, "Congress has decided to back Kadu's ongoing agitation, which addresses various farmers' issues. The concerns raised by Kadu are real. Farmers are facing a severe crisis, with no fair prices for their produce, a high rate of farmer suicides in the state, and unfulfilled election promises of loan waivers by the ruling government. As a result, farmers, already in distress, are completely hopeless and disheartened. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like מהפכת החשמל מגיעה אליכם: עד 20% הנחה בחשבון החשמל החודשי Hot Energy מידע נוסף Undo In such a situation, there is a need for everyone to stand in solidarity with the farmers." Earlier on Friday, high drama unfolded at the protest site, when a member of Kadu's Prahar Janshakti Party consumed poison, and was rushed to the hospital by the medical team present on site. The activist, identified as Ajay Bhagwatrao Chaudhary, has been admitted to a private hospital at Warud. Chaudhary, like many other Prahar activists, had turned restless on Friday citing 'government's apathy' towards Kadu's Annatyag Andolan, now into its sixth day, at Gurukunj Mozari (about 30km from Amravati city). Kadu's agitation raises issues related to farmers, divyangs, widows, fishermen etc. Before Bawankule's visit too the govt has tried to persuade Kadu to withdraw the agitation. Ministers Bharat Gogawale, Pankaja Munde and Jaykumar Gore held online meetings with Kadu, who expressed his resolve to continue the agitation as no concrete assurance reportedly came out of these meetings. As the monsoon session of the legislature is set to begin later this month, NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar has already hinted that Kadu's agitation will be an issue discussed there. Now with Congress backing Kadu, the opposition seems to have found a cause to take up on the floor of the house. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
