Liverpool ready with offer for ANOTHER €100m forward

Liverpool's transfer spending has taken them beyond £290m this summer - with sporting director Richard Hughes overseeing a remarkable campaign so far.
As part of the spree Florian Wirtz was added to the squad for a British record fee that could reach £116m. Liverpool are also ready to go to three figures for Alexander Isak - with Newcastle valuing their star attraction at around £150m.

Rodrygo, 24, has been deemed surplus to requirements at Real Madrid amid intense competition for places. The Brazilian is valued at around €100m by his employers - with the two-time Champions League winner's contract expiring in 2029.
Liverpool keeping tabs on Rodrygo
And now it seems his list of potential destinations is narrowing - with Manchester City joining Liverpool and Arsenal as prime suitors for Rodrygo.
Tottenham have previously been linked with the versatile winger - but it looks like their attentions have now shifted to Man City's Savinho.
Thomas Frank's side are currently undershooting City's valuation of the Brazilian - but if and when they manage to strike a deal it could provoke a City move for Rodrygo.
Competition is fierce for Rodrygo
That's according to a new report in Caught Offside, which claims that Pep Guardiola has already spoken with Rodrygo over a move to the Etihad.
However, Liverpool - and Arsenal for that matter could also have their say. The Reds have been long-standing admirers of Rodrygo - first trying to sign him back in 2019 before he left Santos for Real Madrid.
And the latest reports indicate that Arne Slot's side as well as the Gunners are still 'keeping tabs on Rodrygo's situation', adding that 'competition is fierce'.

It'll either be Isak or Rodrygo claims report
However Liverpool fans should not expect both Rodrygo AND Isak to land at Anfield this summer. Indeed it appears the club will only move on to Rodrygo if they cannot land Isak.
'Liverpool, meanwhile, could step into the race if their pursuit of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak fails to materialise,' the report reads.
No doubt Liverpool will be hoping to strike a deal with the Magpies in the next few days for Isak. He is outside the squad at present - playing no part in the season opener at Aston Villa.

'Everyone loves him' - Saints youngster already a favourite at loan club

VALENCIENNES chief Mathieu Frison admitted "everyone loves" Saints youngster Rento Takaoka less than a month after he joined the French club on loan. Takaoka scored a brace to help Valenciennes claim their first win of the season when they beat Le Puy 2-1 on Friday evening. The 18 year old scored twice in the space of five minutes, having been introduced from the bench for his second professional appearance. Takaoka, who did not play for Saints before heading on his first loan experience, has quickly become a favourite in Northern France. 'Everyone loves him,' Frison explained. 'In line with his development, they [Sport Republic] thought a stint in France, with us, would be good,' he said. The initial plan was for Takaoka to play for Valenciennes' reserve side to gain professional experience, having only just finished high school in Japan. The teenager has never played club football as he joined Saints from Nissho Gakuen High School in March, right after his 18th birthday. Teammate Stredair Appuah has been left impressed by the Japan youth international, who has limited English and French, a month into his loan stint. 'When you understand football and you're good at it, it's easy to play with you on the pitch," Appuah said of the language barrier. 'Rento is a real warrior, a guy who gives his all. He's very strong in front of the goal, he brings depth, and he also has amazing leaps of movement for a guy his height.'

'Save The Bugle', Community help asked to save pub faced with £55k hole

A pub is seeking help from the community as it faces the possibility of closure after a huge financial hole was found. The Bugle Hotel, located in Titchfield, has fallen into financial trouble. Current landlady, Naomi Matthews, who took over in November last year, says that last month she discovered financial difficulties to the tune of £55,000 after her fellow landlady "left the business". Following the discovery, Ms Matthews worked to keep the hotel running smoothly, and has decided alongside her team to fight to try and save the business. Ms Matthews said: "I never expected in a million years this would happen." The Bugle Hotel (Image: Google Maps) Ms Matthews said she offered staff the opportunity to leave with "no hard feelings", but the staff wanted to keep their jobs and try to "make it work". She added: "Because they said they wanted to make it work, I felt I had a duty to help. "Everyone has been really supportive, and the staff have worked really hard. "Everyone is determined to make a run of it. "It is nice that the village and people are coming together to do this; if it wasn't for the support we have had, I wouldn't be doing it." Naomi became a landlady in November last year, having been a regular at the pub. Staff member and media spokesperson, Chloe Dale, said: "We need to ask for help. "We would like to invite the whole community to join us for a 'Save the Bugle' fundraising weekend. "We hope for this to be a really nice, busy community event." The pub has announced the details of its fundraising events, which will take place across the weekend of August 23 and 24. On Saturday, August 23, the pub will host 'Save The Bugle Day'. It will feature a bake sale, raffle and more. On Sunday, August 24, there will be an open-to-all dart tournament. Ms Dale added: "If you help us save the Bugle, it's our number one goal to preserve and enhance all of these qualities, and now being run by a landlady who loves this village, I think we might just do it."

Asia shares slip, dollar steadies ahead of Jackson Hole

By Rae Wee SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Shares in Asia fell on Wednesday, weighed down by a tech-led selloff on Wall Street, while the dollar gained some ground ahead of a key meeting of central bankers later in the week. Oil prices inched higher after falling in the previous session, as traders bet that talks over a possible agreement to end the war in Ukraine could ease sanctions on Russian crude oil, boosting global supply. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 0.47%, as did stock futures in Europe and the U.S.. EUROSTOXX 50 futures slid 0.55%, while DAX futures lost 0.5% and FTSE futures eased 0.14%. S&P 500 futures dipped 0.2% and Nasdaq futures lost 0.34%, extending its fall from the cash session overnight. [.N] "The S&P 500 and Nasdaq slumped overnight as investors ditched high-flying tech stocks with their lofty valuations," said Tony Sycamore, a market analyst at IG. Adding to headwinds for the sector, news that Nvidia and AMD have agreed to give the U.S. government 15% of the revenues from chip sales in China, as well as reports that the U.S. is considering taking a 10% stake in Intel, have stoked investor worries of the Trump administration's growing influence on tech companies. Sources also told Reuters that U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is looking into the federal government taking equity stakes in computer chip manufacturers that receive CHIPS Act funding to build factories in the country. "These developments signal that U.S. government is heading in a concerning and more interventionist direction," said Sycamore. Other bourses in Asia were similarly in the red on Wednesday, with Japan's Nikkei down 1.2%, while China's CSI300 blue-chip index fell 0.5%. Much of investors' attention at the start of the week was on a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and a group of European allies over the Russia-Ukraine war. While the talks concluded without much fanfare, Trump said the United States would help guarantee Ukraine's security in any deal to end Russia's war there. He later said on Tuesday that the United States might provide air support to Ukraine, while ruling out putting U.S. troops on the ground. "The U.S. is not categorically underwriting anything, any security for Ukraine, even if they're open to provide some, because we don't know the conditions under which they will. So there's quite a bit of risk left out there," said Vishnu Varathan, head of macro research for Asia ex-Japan at Mizuho. Oil prices recovered after a fall in the previous session, with Brent crude futures last up 0.46% at $66.09 a barrel. U.S. crude advanced 0.6% to $62.72 per barrel. [O/R] AWAITING JACKSON HOLE All eyes are now on the Kansas City Federal Reserve's August 21-23 Jackson Hole symposium, where Fed Chair Jerome Powell is due to speak on the economic outlook and the central bank's policy framework on Friday. Focus will be on what Powell says about the near-term outlook for rates, with traders almost fully pricing in a rate cut next month. "Given the apparent tensions between U.S. CPI and PPI data, (it) does come across as... premature to declare one way or the other. And most importantly, given this kind of dilemma embedded within the data, it is hard to decipher whether the Fed would take or would emphasise the risks that start to mount on the job side of the equation or (the) need to sit firm," said Mizuho's Varathan. Ahead of the gathering, the dollar firmed slightly, pushing the euro down 0.13% to $1.1633, while sterling fell 0.16% to $1.3470. The New Zealand dollar eased 0.17% to $0.5885 ahead of a rate decision by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand due shortly on Wednesday, where a rate cut is expected. Elsewhere, spot gold fell 0.07% to $3,312.89 an ounce.
