Targeted RON95 subsidy to be done in stages, says Amir

Finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan previously said the subsidy rationalisation would begin in the second half of the year.
PETALING JAYA : Putrajaya will implement the targeted RON95 subsidy this year in stages, taking into consideration the best mechanism to avoid burdening Malaysians, says finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan.
Amir said the government was still in the midst of formulating a suitable system to implement the targeted subsidy, and that it would be tabled to the Cabinet once ready, Berita Harian reported.
'The prime minister has already said the targeted RON95 subsidy will be carried out this year.
'But similar to our approach with the targeted diesel subsidy, we need to ensure that we have the right mechanism to implement it so that we don't burden the rakyat.
'Policy-wise, the prime minister has already said the government will ensure that most Malaysians aren't affected by the (targeted) RON95 subsidy,' the minister was quoted as saying.
Amir previously said the subsidy rationalisation would begin in the second half of the year, although no date was specified.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the cuts would mainly target foreigners and Malaysia's top 5% to 10% of income earners.
He said the government's move towards subsidy rationalisation was a critical step to ensure that national resources are effectively channelled to benefit the lower-income group.

Ringgit inches up on US dollar weakness, slips against other majors

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — The ringgit extended its gains against the greenback at the close on Wednesday, as US President Donald Trump ramped up pressure on the US Federal Reserve (Fed) to cut interest rates. It has been reported that Trump is considering naming a new Fed chairman early, a move seen as undermining the current chairman, Jerome Powell, who has been reluctant to cut interest rates as demanded by the US president. At 6 pm, the local note inched up to 4.2300/2355 versus the greenback from Wednesday's close of 4.2335/2405. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said news of Trump's intention to name the next Fed chair early caused the US Dollar Index (DXY) to fall 0.60 per cent to 97.093 points. 'It remains to be seen how this can be made possible as the current chairman's term will end in May next year. Despite that, the underlying tone is about pressing the Fed to lower the Fed funds rate as soon as possible,' he told Bernama. At the close, the ringgit traded lower against a basket of major currencies and ASEAN countries. It depreciated against the Japanese yen to 2.9359/9399 from 2.9070/9120, slid versus the British pound to 5.8141/8217 from 5.7631/7726, and slid against the euro to 4.9597/9661 from 4.9113/9194 yesterday. Against its Asean peers, the ringgit declined vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3192/3240 from 3.3061/3121, and dipped against the Thai baht to 13.0254/0488 from 12.9584/9858 at Wednesday's close. It eased against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.9/261.4 from 259.7/260.2, and slipped against the Philippine peso to 7.47/7.49 from 7.46/7.48, previously. — Bernama

What does citizenship have to do with MM2H, Syahredzan asks PAS man

DAP MP Syahredzan Johan (left) said it was absurd for Sungai Buloh PAS chief Zaharudin Muhammad to blame others following backlash over the latter's Facebook post. PETALING JAYA : DAP's Syahredzan Johan has slammed Sungai Buloh PAS chief Zaharudin Muhammad over his continued defence of a Facebook post speculating about Malaysia having a Chinese prime minister in the future. The Bangi MP questioned Zaharudin's claim that the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme could lead to foreigners' children gaining citizenship and voting rights. 'What does citizenship have to do with the MM2H programme?' Syahredzan asked in a Facebook post. 'Does this PAS leader even understand the MM2H policy that has been in place for decades? Is this the quality of PAS leadership? And they aspire to govern the country?' MM2H is a long-term visa initiative to attract foreigners to live in Malaysia on a semi-permanent basis. Syahredzan also criticised Zaharudin's threat to take legal action against DAP deputy secretary-general Steven Sim for criticising the initial Facebook post. 'He (Zaharudin) made a mistake, but others were blamed. No apology, no admission of guilt, no remorse, but he wants to sue others,' Syahredzan said. 'PAS leaders should realise that Malaysia is a multiracial country and belongs to all. Our unity must be defended and celebrated.' In his initial post, Zaharudin had speculated that Malaysia might see its first prime minister of Chinese descent in the next 30 to 40 years, using a screenshot of a news report of lieutenant-general Johnny Lim's promotion 'just for illustration'. The post was widely criticised and later deleted, with Zaharudin saying it had been 'taken out of context'. Sim called for Zaharudin to be investigated over his post, claiming it was seditious. PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the post went against the Islamic party's stance.

Top Glove sees room to grow in US market despite price pressures

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — Top Glove Corporation Bhd expects demand for gloves to grow with opportunities to capture additional sales from the United States (US) when there is more clarity on issues surrounding US tariffs. It also said the tariff imposed by the US on China products is unlikely to be lower than Malaysia's. Managing director Lim Cheong Guan said the group's diverse portfolio is an advantage. It can offer a range to meet customers' preferences and pricing requirements while acknowledging competition in other regions. 'The final tariff decision by the US government will provide much-needed visibility for both manufacturers and customers,' he said in the group's virtual results briefing for the third quarter ended May 31, 2025 (3Q FY2025) today. 'Meanwhile, to mitigate the impact of US dollar volatility on profitability, we will maintain a consistent hedging policy on a month-to-month basis,' he said. Lim also said quarterly fluctuations in average selling prices (ASPs) are to be expected, influenced by raw material cost volatility, among other issues. Nonetheless, market conditions are expected to stabilise over time, he said. Overall, Lim said the group has a positive outlook for the glove industry and is confident of delivering stronger results in the coming quarters. On the cost front, Lim said if raw material prices decline gradually, this would help ease some of the pressure from price competition. At the same time, improvement in utilisation — 65 per cent in June — is expected to rise in the coming months. This will help to optimise cost and boost competitiveness in the challenging market environment. The 2 per cent mandatory Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) contribution for foreign workers would cost the group RM200,000 a month, he said. 'If you look at it in terms of average selling price, it will be 0.1 per cent of the ASP,' said Lim. For the 3Q FY2025, Top Glove saw its net profit decline to RM34.75 million from RM50.67 million a year ago. Revenue was higher at RM830.25 million versus RM636.87 million in 3Q FY2024, it said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia. Lim said the group's 3Q FY2025 performance was impacted by pronounced headwinds, lower ASPs, heightened competition, coupled with cost savings pass-through. For the nine months ended May 31, 2025 (9MFY2025), Top Glove returned to the black with a net profit of RM70.50 million against a net loss of RM58.23 million a year ago. Revenue was RM2.59 billion against RM1.68 billion in the same period last year. In the same period, sales revenue surged 55 per cent, accompanied by a 65 per cent increase in sales volume compared with 9MFY2024. 'Our 9MFY2025 earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation have increased by a substantial 12 per cent from a year ago. It continues to track steadily towards pre-COVID levels, which is more reflective, as quarterly results can be more volatile due to the effects of headwinds and tailwinds. — Bernama
