Parents face neglect, manslaughter charges after 7-year-old son hit and killed by car

Yahoo2 days ago

The parents of a 7-year-old boy who was hit and killed while crossing a busy Gastonia street were arrested on Thursday.
Jessica Ivey Jenkins, 30, and Sameule Jenkins, 31, were charged with felony involuntary manslaughter, felony child neglect and misdemeanor child neglect in the death of their son, Legend, according to Gastonia Police.
Legend, a second grader at H.H. Beam Elementary School, was struck and killed by a Jeep Cherokee driven by a 76-year-old woman about 6 p.m. Tuesday while he was attempting to cross West Hudson Boulevard, near the Gaston County Health Department. Legend was with his 10-year-old brother at the time he was killed.
Jessica Ivey Jenkins said in an earlier interview that she had been shopping at Food Lion, and she allowed Legend and his older brother to walk from the grocery store to their home, which is nearby. It was the first time she had let her children cross that street alone.
"While the Gastonia Police Department offers its deepest sympathies to the family for the heartbreaking loss of their child, the investigation revealed that the children involved were unsupervised at the time the boy stepped into traffic. In such cases, adults must be held accountable for their responsibilities to ensure a safe environment for their children," the police department said in a press release. "At this time, there is no evidence of speeding or wrongdoing on the part of the driver, therefore no charges have been filed."
Both parents are being held without bond.

Former Gastonia police officer indicted on charges claiming she made false statement during firearm purchase

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – A former Gastonia Police officer who was convicted for unlawful use of the department's computer databases was indicted in more charges this week. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for Western North Carolina, a federal indictment was unsealed Friday in federal court charging Xana Dove with straw purchasing a firearm. Dove, 28, of Charlotte, was arrested on Thursday, and was released on bond following her initial court appearance. Parents held on $1.5M bond each after 7-year-old fatally struck crossing street unsupervised According to allegations in the indictment, on May 25, 2023, Dove knowingly made a false and fictitious written statement to Shooters Express, a licensed firearms dealer in Belmont, in connection with the acquisition of a Springfield Hellcat Pro, 9mm pistol. The indictment alleges that Dove falsely stated on a federal form that she was the actual transferee/buyer of the firearm when the defendant knew this statement was false and fictitious. Dove is charged with making a false statement during the purchase of a firearm and causing a false report during a firearm purchase. If convicted, Dove faces a combined maximum sentence of up to 15 years in prison. In December 2023, Love was charged with 32 felonies, including 15 counts of accessing a government computer and four counts of felony conspiracy. This includes allegations of telling a man how to lie on a polygraph test. She pled guilty to two of the charges, and was sentenced to 11 months in prison. She was suspended from the department the previous September after she posted bond for allegedly filing a false police report, and was terminated in November. The new charges in the indictment are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. Assistant U.S. Attorney Dana Washington with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Charlotte is prosecuting the case. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Hawks Legend Speaks on Kevin Durant's Legacy

Hawks Legend Speaks on Kevin Durant's Legacy originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant's legacy has long been a subject of fan debate. Since leaving the Golden State Warriors in 2019, the teams he's joined have struggled to reach the NBA Finals. This lack of deep playoff runs has fueled criticism, with fans questioning his legacy in the league. Advertisement Former Atlanta Hawks star Dominique Wilkins was asked his thoughts about Durant's legacy. Kyle Odegard of ESports Insider interviewed the Hawks legend earlier this week and had plenty of questions. One of Odegard's inquiries was about the 15-time All-Star. Given that Wilkins was once an All-Star in the NBA, he knew the impact the two-time champion had in the league. Atlanta Hawks guard Dyson Daniels dribbles while defended by Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Zanine-Imagn Images According to the former nine-time All-Star, KD has nothing left to prove in the league. "He's put his mark on the game. Kevin Durant doesn't need to prove anything to anybody about how great he is. He's one of the greatest players to ever play the game, one of the greatest scorers ever. He doesn't have to prove anything. Everything else is gravy," Wilkins said. Advertisement Additionally, Wilkins weighed in on Durant's looming offseason move. After the Suns missed the postseason, many have predicted that the star forward will force his way out of Phoenix and join a different franchise. According to The Human Highlight Film, he thinks KD should be comfortable with what he's won with the Warriors. Moving around "would be taxing" to Durant's body, given that he's already 36. Like KD, Wilkins had an impactful career in the NBA. During his prime years, he was one of the best athletes and often went toe-to-toe with Michael Jordan's athleticism. The former All-Star forward spent 12 years with the Hawks, leading them to numerous playoff appearances. Unfortunately for Atlanta, Wilkins couldn't provide a championship to the city. Still, his impact and legacy remain alive in the organization. He averaged 26.4 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists with the franchise.
