Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Say 'I Do' in Venice Wedding Marred by Billionaire-Bashing Protests

The three-day, $10 million extravaganza reportedly took over the whole island of San Giorgio Maggiore, opposite Venice's historic St. Mark's Square, with a guest list that boasted Oprah, Bill Gates, Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Karlie Kloss, Ivanka Trump, Orlando Bloom, Jewel, Leonardo DiCaprio, Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg.
The couple hosted A-list attendees in heavily booked hotels across the city, including at the Aman, where George and Amal Clooney tied the knot in 2014; Gritti Palace; The St. Regis; Hotel Danieli; and Belmond Cipriani. Vogue boss Anna Wintour reportedly helped Sánchez select her dress for the ceremony, and word spread that Elton John was asked to perform.
It's hard to expect any less from Bezos, one of the world's richest men (valued at $233 billion), whose wedding planners have commandeered many of the city's resources. But a portion of Venice natives were not so welcoming. Blocked streets and boat reroutes prompted a group of them to make their feelings known.
Banners reading, 'If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax,' and, 'No Space for Bezos' — referencing the American businessman's cosmic aspirations with his space-travel firm Blue Origin — were displayed in Venice ahead of the nuptials. Meanwhile, other protesters threatened to fill the canals with inflatables, dinghies and boats to obstruct Bezos' water taxis. Graffiti and stickers plastered on walls remarked: 'Veniceland: A playground fit for an oligarch.'
Greenpeace Italy and U.K.-based group Everyone Hates Elon, which The Hollywood Reporter recently spoke to about their billionaire-bashing efforts, joined in by unveiling the aforementioned tax-angled message on a 400-square-meter banner in the middle of St. Mark's Square on Monday. It was swiftly removed by police. According to a 2021 ProPublica report based on IRS data, in 2007 and again in 2011, Bezos managed to pay nothing in federal income tax, and his tax rate from 2014 to 2018 was estimated to be just 0.98 percent.
Chief among the concerns are Venice's already-overcrowded streets, worsened by the constant influx of tourists, and climate change contributing to a sinking city. 'Bezos' wedding is a symbol of extreme wealth, privilege and a lot of things that are going wrong currently in the world,' said Greenpeace campaigner Clara Thompson, who added that the wedding took place in 'one of the world's most climate-vulnerable cities.'
Among Amazon's biggest critics are climate activists who denounce the company's carbon emissions, packaging waste and reported destruction of unsold goods.
The pop-up protests seemed to have worked: The BBC reported on Tuesday that a local official confirmed that the wedding celebrations, set to take place at the Scuola Grande della Misericordia, would take place instead at the Arsenale, farther from the city center.
Still, the now-married couple reportedly quietly donated to Venetian charities in April and sourced 80 percent of their wedding provisions from local vendors.
On Monday, Luca Zaia, president of the surrounding Veneto region, announced a 1 million euro ($1.16 million) donation by Bezos and Sánchez to the Corila Consortium, an international scientific research group doing work on the Venice lagoon, according to CNN. 'The generous donation by Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez represents an act of great sensitivity and foresight,' Zaia said. 'Venice is not only a symbolic city of Veneto and Italy, it is a heritage of humanity that demands attention, respect and care.'
Conservative Mayor Luigi Brugnaro, who has run Venice for 10 years, condemned the protests. 'Whoever loves Venice will always be welcome,' he said, while other city officials promised 'the celebrations, attended by 250 guests, will blend into the daily rhythm of the city.'
Bezos' wedding planners from the London-based Lanza & Baucina events company said in a statement to Page Six that they had been actively working to avoid negative effects on the city. 'We have always acknowledged the wider debate and critical issues surrounding the city's future, and from the outset, our client has been honored to support the city and its all-important lagoon through non-profit organizations and associated projects,' the company said.

Nobody Is Wearing Red, White, and Blue Like Beyoncé
It is very rare that I find myself overthinking an outfit. While I do put ample thought into what I wear—checking the weather, getting dressed with important meetings and after-work commitments in mind, and asking myself how long I can really walk in a pair of platforms—I'm not one to spiral like Cher in Clueless looking for her white, collarless shirt from Fred Segal, or make a mess of my room, trying on everything I own while bemoaning that I have nothing to wear! There are two exceptions, though: If I'm going to a game and cheering for a team with red, white, and blue team colors, or, if it's the Fourth of July. A few months ago, while in Philadelphia for a 76ers vs. Golden State Warriors game, I opted for a blue crop top, a white faux fur coat, and a bold red lip. I wanted to look like I was supporting the Sixers, but I did not want to look like a walking American flag; I know I'm not alone in that trepidation. American history is marred by atrocities against Black people: Slavery, Jim Crow, lynching, centuries of systemic racism that has permeated everything from public education and the justice system to housing and healthcare. All of this has transpired, and much of it continues to, despite the fact that the United States as we know it would not exist without the contributions of Black people. I was born and raised here. I could not be more proud of my ancestors. I have lived a comfortable and privileged life in America. But given all the ways the country has mistreated and disenfranchised Black people, I've never been compelled to wear patriotism on my sleeve. That sentiment is especially strong today, as I find myself increasingly enraged by this country's current political and social landscape. This Fourth of July I will likely be in black; to me, it feels more like America's funeral than its birthday.

Song Hye-Kyo And Jeon Yeo-Been Film 'Dark Nuns' To Debut In U.S.
Song Hye-kyo is a rogue nun who performs exorcisms in 'Dark Nuns.' Sister Giuna is known as a 'dark nun" because of her belief in demonic possession and the means she employs to exorcize demonic spirits. While some in the church support her belief in exorcism, others consider it superstition. Some of the priests who do believe in exorcisms can't imagine a nun would be effective. She's just a nun. They underestimate her skills and resolve. In the Korean film Dark Nuns Sister Giuna is the only one who can vanquish a powerful demon, even if she needs some help with her rituals. Giuna, played by Song Hye-kyo, asks Sister Michaela, played by Jeon Yeo-been, to help her perform the necessary rites. Sister Michaela initially needs some convincing as she works under Father Paolo, played by Lee Jin-uk (Squid Game, Sweet Home, Dear Hyeri). He doesn't believe in exorcism, stressing that faith and psychology are the answers to a patient's problems. However she's had firsthand experience with demons. She knows they exist and how dangerous they can be, so she decides to help Sister Giuna exorcize a boy being tormented by demons. Jeon Yeo-been plays a nun who has some experience seeing demons in 'Dark Nuns.' Dark Nuns is the supernatural sequel to the 2015 film The Priests, starring Kim Yoon-seok (The Frog, Tazza: High Rollers, Noryang The Deadly Sea) Park So-dam (Parasite, Death's Game, Record of Youth) and Kang Dong-won, (Peninsula, Jeon Woo-chee, Uprising). The horror mystery film is about a young girl who is possessed by an evil spirit and the two priests who attempt to save her soul. The 2025 film Dark Nuns was a box office hit in Korea. Part of the appeal in both these exorcism stories is the star cast. Song, well known to international audiences for her roles in The Glory, Encounter and Descendants of the Sun, creates a strong character in Sister Giuna, a woman ready to sacrifice what's left of her life in the battle against evil. Jeon, another accomplished actress, known for her roles in Harbin, Glitch and Vincenzo, also creates a relatable character, one tormented by her own visions of evil. The rituals they perform to save a young victim's soul put them in direct violation of the church's orders. Performing such rituals endangers their lives and also their immortal souls. Director Hyuk Jae-kwon creates a seductively eerie mood with thoughtful visual effects and discordant background noises. Characters operate in mist and shadows. Scenes are set in grimy derelict spaces or feature the ominous sound of agitated bat wings. Still, it's the force of the film's female stars that demand attention as they pursue their deadly mission. The Nuns and its precursor The Priests are distributed by Well Go USA Entertainment. There are a few viewing options. Both films will be released on Blu-Ray and DVD through Amazon on July 15. The films are also available on streaming platform that same day.
