Coimbatore corporation collects 65 tonnes of bulky household waste
A corporation official said the drive was aimed at addressing the accumulation of bulky waste items like old cots, sofas, mattresses, tables and chairs in households and ensuring proper disposal. The collection drive was carried out ward wise, he said.
"Many residents contacted corporation staff and handed over such bulky waste items to sanitary workers. Ward and zonal offices functioned as the collection centres.
The collected waste was later transported to the Vellalore dump yard in trucks. Once the drive concludes, recyclers will be invited to take reusable items. The remaining waste will be disposed of in a scientific manner," the official said.
For assistance, residents could contact the north zone office at 8925975980, west zone office at 8925975981, central zone office at 8925975982, south zone office at 9043066114 and the east zone office at 8925840945.
Welcoming the initiative, R Guna, of Sowripalayam, said the residents were forced to dump old furniture on roadsides or in water bodies in the absence of a regular system for collecting bulky household waste. "The corporation should conduct similar drives at least once every six months."
