University of Zululand basketball team excels in national comp
Unizulu competed in Section C, with the top two teams promoted to Section B. The squad defied expectations with an impressive run, finishing runners-up and securing their place in the higher division.
Here, they dominated opponents such as Durban University of Technology (DUT), University of Fort Hare, Sol Plaatje University, and the University of Limpopo, winning all four games to top their pool.
In the knockout stages, they faced Nelson Mandela University, the second seed from Pool A, which included North West University-Potchefstroom (NWU-Potch), North West University-Mafikeng, Belgium Campus, and the University of Mpumalanga.
Unizulu triumphed, setting up an exciting all-KZN final against DUT which had upset the top-seeded NWU-Potch in their semi-final.
The championship match was closely contested, with Unizulu fighting back from an 11-point deficit in the first quarter to level the game at 47-47 before the fourth.
However, DUT held their nerve, winning 53-49 to claim the title.
Despite their defeat, Unizulu's second-place finish means they will advance to Section B, marking a historic achievement for the university in USSA basketball.
The team's performance also saw Felix Silwimba, the squad's point guard, and Chris Nyadawo, the forward, selected for the all-star team of Section C of the USSA competition.
Meanwhile, Ivy Zondo from the women's team was also chosen as an all-star, signalling a successful sporting year for Unizulu's basketball teams.
Head coach Harris Maduku expressed pride in the team's achievement.
'Given the challenges we've faced over the years, this is a huge milestone. 'Nobody expected us to reach the finals, but the players showed heart and determination,' he said.
As Unizulu prepares for its Section B debut in 2026, the future appears promising for the rising basketball programme.

Richards Bay FC supporters pinched themselves when they woke this (Thursday) morning, hoping the 1-0 loss to Lamontville Golden Arrows last night had just been a bad dream. But it was, in fact, real – a nightmare. After again hugely dominating proceedings, firing shots at will against their opponents, the Rich Boyz were simply unable to put the ball into the back of the net. There were at least a dozen clear opportunities, when it looked easier to score than to miss, but not one that mattered. It was the opposite story for Arrows, whose lone second-half chance was well and truly buried by Junior Dion – a magnificent volley from just outside the box that left four defenders and goalkeeper Salim Magoola mere spectators. No stopper in the world would have got near, and ultimately the 82nd minute goal was enough to deny NRB the win they thoroughly deserved. That's two losses in two games in an unlucky start to their Betway Premiership campaign, after losing 2-1 to Marumo Gallants in the season opener. And it won't get easier as they travel to the FNB Stadium on Tuesday to meet Kaizer Chiefs and their thousands of fans. 35 000 LIV South Africa tickets already sold
Interest in South Africa's LIV Golf tournament is 'off the charts', according to Stinger GC general manager Richard Glover. Speaking to the Sunday Times from Chicago, where Louis Oosthuizen's all-South African team was leading after the first round, Glover revealed that more than 35 000 tickets had been sold for LIV's debut African event at Steyn City next March – with over 30 000 snapped up in the first week alone. 'The interest in this event has been off the charts, both from a public perspective and also from a corporate South Africa perspective,' said Glover, a former Tennis SA CEO. He said LIV Golf aimed to 'position itself as the Formula 1 of golf' by complementing traditional Tours, attracting new sponsors and growing the game. Data shows 54% of LIV fans are aged 16-34, and 30% of attendees at its events are first-time golf fans. MORE: Steyn City faces big build-up to LIV Golf debut Kelvin Watt, chairman of Nielsen Sports Africa, told the Sunday Times the local market was 'ripe' for LIV, predicting the event's economic impact could be 'in the hundreds of millions, if not in the billions of rands' through hospitality, tourism and related services. He said LIV's $25-million (R443m) prize fund for the Steyn City event will exceed the entire Sunshine Tour purse for the 2024-25 season by almost R160m. 'They really do know how to put on a show,' Watt added, comparing LIV's potential impact to the Million Dollar Challenge in the 1980s – 'the original LIV' in terms of small fields, guaranteed payouts and global appeal. The Zululand Observer was at the stadium while work was feverishly under way to get the field game-ready once again.
