Kamal Haasan must apologise in two days for remark on Kannada language, says Karnataka film chamber

The Hindu29-05-2025

The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has demanded an apology from veteran actor Kamal Haasan for his controversial remarks on the Kannada language. The KFCC has said that it will halt the release of Kamal Haasan's movie Thug Life in Karnatakaif the actor doesn't apologise in two days. Directed by Mani Ratnam, Thug Life is set to hit the screens worldwide on June 05, 2025.
Talking about the row, M Narasimhalu, KFCC chairman, told The Hindu, 'It's no longer about a film. It's about an entire state.' During the audio launch of Thug Life in Chennai on May 24, 2025 (Saturday), Kamal Haasan made a remark that 'Tamil gave birth to Kannada.' The actor's statement spurred a row, with people from Karnataka, including pro-Kannada groups and the BJP, criticising him for hurting their sentiment.
On May 29, 2025 (Thursday), the KFCC held a meeting with members of the Exhibitors Association of Karnataka and Distributors Association of Karnataka to discuss the issue. 'The KFCC stands by the sentiments of the people of Karnataka. Kamal Haasan has to apologise in the next two days for a smooth release of Thug Life in Karnataka. The decision was taken with the backing of distributors and exhibitors along with former presidents of KFCC.'
Bengaluru is a significant market for big-star Tamil movies. Distributors face the threat of a huge loss in case the release of Thug Life is delayed in Karnataka. 'The distributors are seeking the help of the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce to obtain an apology from Kamal Haasan. As of now, we have directed theatre owners and distributors to refrain from taking the film yet,' said Narasimhalu
In 2018, distributors faced the heat when the release of Kaala was banned in Karnataka following the controversial remarks of superstar Rajinikanth on the river Cauvery issue. After buying the film for a whopping rate, distributors endured a huge loss after the film missed its release on the opening day in Karnataka.
Rajinikanth sparked a controversy when he asked the then Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy to release Tamil Nadu's share of water as mandated by the Supreme Court. 'If the Cauvery Management Board isn't formed soon, then the Centre will face the wrath of Tamil Nadu,' the superstar had said. Kaala eventually released a day later in Karnataka.

M Narasimhalu recalled Baahubali 2being the other big film that faced an issue in Karnataka before its release in 2021. Pro-Kannada groups threatened to ban the highly anticipated sequel due to Sathyaraj's 'anti-Kannada' comments in relation to the Cauvery row. All decks were cleared for the movie's release in Karnataka after the actor, and the film's director, SS Rajamouli, addressed the issue and requested the film's release.

Thug Life box office collection day 5: Kamal Haasan's big-budget flop nosedives on Monday, earns just one-fourth of Housefull 5

Thug Life box office collection day 5: Notwithstanding the sky-high expectations surrounding its release, particularly since it marked the long-awaited reunion of director Mani Ratnam and actor Kamal Haasan nearly four decades after Nayakan (1987), the gangster drama Thug Life is tanking at the box office, owing to poor responses from all quarters. On its first Monday in theatres, the film managed to earn just about a quarter of the critically panned Housefull 5, which was released on the same weekend. On Monday, Thug Life recorded a meagre India nett collection of Rs 3.62 crore, bringing its overall domestic earnings to Rs 40.52 crore, according to early estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk. While the Tamil version contributed Rs 3.25 crore, the Telugu and Hindi versions added just Rs 29 lakh and Rs 8 lakh, respectively. In stark contrast, director Tarun Mansukhani's Housefull 5, starring Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Jacqueline Fernandez and Sanjay Dutt, among others, earned Rs 13.76 crore the same day, despite overwhelmingly negative reviews. Thug Life's total worldwide gross now stands at Rs 75 crore. On Monday, Thug Life saw an overall occupancy of just 18.05 per cent in the Tamil market. While the morning shows began with 14.11 per cent, the rate fluctuated throughout the day with afternoon, evening and night screenings recording 19.53 per cent, 17.99 per cent and 20.57 per cent occupancy, respectively. According to the latest figures, Thug Life is faring extremely poorly compared to Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's recent films. While Vikram, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, earned Rs 15.8 crore domestically on its first Monday after opening at Rs 32.05 crore, Kamal and Shankar's colossal misfire Indian 2, which debuted at Rs 25.6 crore, managed Rs 3 crore on its first Monday. Considering this, Thug Life is showing all signs of becoming as big a box office disaster as Indian 2 was. In the case of recent Mani Ratnam films, while Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 (2022) registered a first Monday nett collection of Rs 19.05 crore after opening at Rs 34 crore, Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2 (2023) had earned Rs 23.25 crore on its first Monday, following a debut of Rs 24 crore. In fact, Thug Life's first Monday collection trails significantly behind Adhik Ravichandran's Ajith Kumar-starrer Good Bad Ugly (Rs 15 crore) and Ashwath Marimuthu's Pradeep Ranganathan-led Dragon (Rs 5.8 crore), which currently stand as the highest-grossing Tamil films of 2025, with global grosses of Rs 246.15 crore and Rs 150.52 crore, respectively. Meanwhile, rumours are also rife that Thug Life might premiere on OTT much earlier than the originally planned date. Although Kamal Haasan had stated prior to release that the film would maintain an eight-week window between theatrical and streaming debuts, reports now indicate it may arrive on OTT after just four weeks, since the movie is underperforming. According to M9 News, trade experts believe that the OTT release of the movie could be preponed, with the film's official streaming partner Netflix likely to stream the film sooner than expected. Also starring Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Abhirami in key roles, Thug Life features music by Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman, cinematography by Ravi K Chandran and editing by A Sreekar Prasad. The film was jointly bankrolled by Raaj Kamal Films International and Madras Talkies.

Why Sonakshi Sinha and Jyothika replaced Kareena Kapoor Khan-Kiara Advani in Ashwiny Iyer's upcoming OTT film?

After almost two years of back-and-forth, filmmaker Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari has finally hit the ground running with her much-awaited OTT project, a courtroom drama backed by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani's Excel Entertainment, and Harman Baweja's Baweja Studios. What's making more noise than the shoot itself is the casting shuffle that saw Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kiara Advani being replaced by Sonakshi Sinha and Jyothika. What happened to Kareena and Kiara? Let's rewind. Kareena and Kiara were initially locked for the project, and fans were quite excited to see the two powerhouse performers together. But despite months of discussions and planning, things just didn't fall into place. The team was eager to kick off the shoot earlier this year, but scheduling conflicts and creative disagreements reportedly delayed the project further. A source close to the production spilt the tea to Mid-day: 'The original plan with Kapoor and Advani didn't materialise because it didn't align with [our] timelines and creative direction.' A fresh cast, a fresh take With the new draft in place and the story tightened, Ashwiny and her team began auditioning again. That's when Sonakshi Sinha stepped in. After multiple look tests and script readings, she was locked in for the lead role of a fierce, no-nonsense lawyer. According to insiders, her performance in recent roles, especially her bold avatar in Dahaad, made her a perfect fit. 'Sonakshi brings a grounded intensity to the role that impressed the creative team,' said the source. As for the second lead, Jyothika, who has already proved her courtroom chops in the 2020 Tamil film Ponmagal Vandhal, was roped in to play a strong parallel character. She's expected to start shooting mid-June. This is not your usual courtroom drama The film, which has already begun shooting in parts of Malvani, Madh Island, and Vile Parle (where courtroom sets have been specially recreated), is shaping up to be an emotionally charged legal drama. But this isn't your typical black-coat drama filled with loud objections and flying verdicts. 'The legal arguments have emotional backstories, and both female leads have equal weight. Their courtroom scenes are expected to be the highlight of the film,' the source added. The film is yet to be titled, and if everything goes as planned, the team will wrap by the end of this year, and we could be looking at a 2026 release on Amazon Prime Video.
