Karnataka Caps Movie Ticket Prices At Rs 200, But Internet Has A Multiplex Concern
The Karnataka government has reinstated a Rs 200 ticket cap for regional films in theatres, including multiplexes. The decision came after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's announcement in his budget speech. It is expected to benefit film enthusiasts and the regional film industry alike, promoting a more vibrant and inclusive cinematic experience in the state. What's Happening The price cap was imposed by amending Rule 55 of the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 2014, to incorporate a new sub-rule. The sixth sub-rule mentions that the cost of each show in all state cinemas, including multiplexes, for films in all languages, should not exceed Rs 200, inclusive of amusement tax. The directive, dated July 15, was signed on behalf of the Governor by the state undersecretary to the government for the prisons and cinema section of the Home Department. Karnataka Government orders fixing the price for the movie tickets across the state including multiplexes. The prices of tickets should not exceed Rs 200 inclusive of entertainment tax. — ANI (@ANI) July 15, 2025 Reactions On The Internet There was a wide range of reactions on the Internet after the official announcement of the Rs 200-cap on movie ticket prices. One of the curious cinegoers asked Grok, the AI chatbot integrated with X, "Hey, do you know when this rule kicks in?" Another X user called it a "great move". "Better late than never. But they must also ensure multiplexes don't find loopholes to dodge this rule." Some had concerns about the F&B prices and parking fee. "What about popcorn and parking charges?" "And, it will last only for few months... After that everyone will increase the prices. Have seen many these earlier..." another one pointed out. Looking Forward The decision by the state government comes in reaction to a rising demand for more reasonable multiplex tickets, where premium formats such as IMAX, 4DX, and reclining seats typically cost between Rs 600 and 1,000. The government expects that by establishing a consistent price ceiling, it would be able to promote accessibility and expand the audience base for Kannada and other regional films at theatres. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce and the Karnataka Film Exhibitors Association have backed the decision. Despite previous opposition from multiplex giants, they hope the cap will help bring more Kannada filmgoers to theatres. Back in 2017, during his first term as chief minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah announced a cap on movie ticket prices at Rs 200 across all theatres. However, multiplex owners expressed concern about probable revenue losses and petitioned the Karnataka High Court to overturn the ruling. The cap was eventually lifted, and theatres continued to set their own pricing structures. The reintroduction of the cap is being regarded as a crucial step toward promoting regional cinema in Karnataka.

Karnataka brings back price cap of Rs 200 for regional cinema in theatres, multiplexes
Keeping in line with an announcement made in the state budget earlier this year by CM Siddaramaiah, the Karnataka government issued an order Tuesday for capping the prices of cinema tickets for regional language films at Rs 200. The capping of prices has been implemented through an amendment to the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 2014, where Rule 55 has been amended to include a new sub-rule. The sub-rule number six states that the cost of the ticket of each show in all theatres of the state, including multiplexes, for all language films should not exceed Rs 200, inclusive of entertainment tax. The order dated July 15 has been signed on behalf of the Governor by the state under secretary to the government for the prisons and cinema section in the Home Department. Earlier this year, CM Siddaramaiah, in his budget speech on March 7, announced a plan to cap movie ticket prices at Rs 200, including in multiplexes, for regional language films. The proposal was backed by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce and the Karnataka Film Exhibitors Association as an effort to draw more audiences to theatres for Kannada films, despite resistance from multiplexes. The capping policy was announced to standardise ticket pricing broadly and also address the rise in complaints against multiplex giants for charging exorbitant ticket prices. In 2017, Siddaramaiah announced a cap on movie ticket prices at Rs 200 across all theatres, including multiplexes, during his first tenure as chief minister. However, enforcing this cap faced challenges. Multiplex owners expressed concerns over potential revenue losses and approached the Karnataka High Court to contest the decision. The cap was subsequently lifted, and theatres continued to set their own pricing structures.

Bengaluru civil court issues gag order directing Kamal Haasan against speaking about Kannada
The court of the 31st Additional City Civil and Sessions judge issued a gag order against Kamal Haasan on July 4, following a suit filed by Mahesh Joshi, chairman of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, on July 2. The Kannada Sahitya Parishat has alleged that remarks made by the actor suggested the 'superiority of one language over the other'. The suit sought to restrain Kamal Hassan from making remarks in the future that could hurt the sentiments of the Kannada people. In the order restraining Haasan from commenting on the Kannada language, the civil court stated that the Kannada Sahitya Parishat is 'empowered to take any steps in the interest of Kannadigas, their literature and culture.' 'This court is of the considered view that granting ex-parte ad-interim relief of temporary injunction against the defendant is necessary in order to prevent the defendant from making any statement/remarks claiming linguistic superiority of one language over other and thereby hurting the sentiments of Kannada people in respect of their land, language and culture till the next date of hearing,' the civil court said. The court noted that the Kannada Sahitya Parishat president said that Kamal Haasan had remarked, 'Kannada was born out of Tamil,' during a film promotion, which allegedly hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas. 'It is the specific allegation of the plaintiffs that by making such remarks, the defendant is claiming superiority of one language over the other. Hence, he prays to restrain the defendant from making the same or similar remarks in future, having the effect of hurting the sentiments of Kannada people in respect of their land, language and culture,' the court noted. 'If this court, instead of granting ex parte ad-interim order of temporary injunction, orders for the issuance of notice to the defendant, then the very purpose of granting temporary injunction would be defeated by delay,' the civil court said in its order. 'The defendant, his agents, assigns, representatives or any person acting under or through them are hereby restrained, by way ad-interim ex parte order of temporary injunction, from posting, making, issuing, writing, publishing and/or distributing any statement or remarks claiming linguist superiority over Kannada language or by making any statements having the effect of causing hurt or defaming the Kannada language, literature, land and culture till the next date of hearing,' the civil court said. Kamal Haasan made the remarks about Kannada during the audio release of his film Thug Life in Chennai in May. The Mani Ratnam-directed movie, which was due for release on June 5 across India, was stalled in Karnataka following an outrage over his remark that 'Tamil gave birth to Kannada'. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) sought an apology from the actor to facilitate the release of the film, even as pro-Kannada groups threatened to target theatres if the movie is screened. Kamal Haasan, who was recently nominated to the parliament as a Rajya Sabha member from Tamil Nadu, did not acquiesce to the demand for an apology, and instead chose not to release Thug Life in Karnataka. The filmmakers approached the Supreme Court after the Karnataka High Court also suggested the actor should apologise to facilitate the film's release. On June 18, the Supreme Court directed the Karnataka Government to ensure the uninterrupted release of Thug Life after the state filed an affidavit confirming that there would be no restrictions on the movie's release. The top court said the state must act swiftly against any groups attempting to disrupt the film's release forcibly.

Kamal Haasan's Thug Life Quietly Arrives On Netflix In Less Than A Month Of Its Theatrical Release Following Language Row
Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan and directed by Mani Ratnam, released in Indian theatres, except for Karnataka, on June 5, 2025. The film has now silently arrived on Netflix in five languages -- Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, in less than a month of its release in cinema halls. The Tamil gangster action drama was embroiled in controversy after lead star Kamal Haasan at a promotional event said "Your language (Kannada) was born out of Tamil". Despite backlash, Kamal Haasan -- who was also attached with the film as a producer -- refused to apologise for his comments. He also decided to not release the film, mounted on a reported budget of Rs 200-300 crore, in Karnataka, which may have played a role in Thug Life 's poor box office collections. What's Happening On Thursday morning, Thug Life -- also starring Silambarasan TR -- quietly made its streaming debut on Netflix. Its OTT premiere came two days before it completed even a month in theatres. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Netflix India (@netflix_in) In an Instagram post, Netflix said, "It is a battle between Death and Rangaraya Sakthivel, want to see who wins the game? Watch Thug Life, now on Netflix in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam #ThugLifeOnNetflix #Thuglife #KamalHaasan #SilambarasanTR "A #ManiRatnam Film An @arrahman Musical @ikamalhaasan @silambarasantrofficial #Mahendran @siva_ananth @trishakrishnan @aishu__ @ashokselvan @abhiramiact @jojugeorgeactorofficial @dop007 @rkfioffl @madrastalkies @turmericmedia @magizhmandram @saregamatamil." What The Audience Said About Thug Life 's OTT premiere A section of social media users seemed disinterested in watching the film on OTT. One of them commented on Netflix's Thug Life announcement post, "Save your life." Another said, "Not interested." An Instagram user said, "Not interested. Already wasted my valuable time and money in theatre." In A Nutshell Weeks before the release of Thug Life, Kamal Haasan landed into a fresh controversy with his "your language (Kannada) was born out of Tamil" remark at an event. The row led to boycott calls from the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce and pro-Kannada language groups. The film, directed by Mani Ratnam, didn't release in Karnataka on June 5, 2025, as did in the rest of the country and other international territories. According to reports, Thug Life emerged as one of the highest grossing Tamil films of 2025 earning around Rs 90 crore, but it didn't perform well at the box office considering its massive budget (Rs 200-300 crore). The movie is now streaming on Netflix.
