Clayton County superintendent pushing high school seniors to have a plan before graduation
Many high school seniors are graduating this month, but nearly 30% of students will leave school without a plan for the future.
Channel 2's Lori Wilson spoke with the superintendent of Clayton County Public Schools, who says he was determined to make sure all of his students knew their next step.
Dr. Anthony Smith says he went to each school to call on every high school senior to be intentional about what happens after graduating and choose one of what he calls the four Es: enrollment, enlist, employment or entrepreneurship.

'It allows them to continue with their dreams far beyond once they walk across the stage with their degree and get that diploma,' Dr. Smith said.
Wilson also got to meet students who chose each of Smith's four paths.
Kennedy Williams decided to enroll at Kennesaw State University.
'They really pushed me to find new opportunities,' she said. 'I ended up getting a job at the district in the math department.'
Michael is going the employment route and already has a job as a lineman with Georgia Power.
'If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have this opportunity,' he said.

'Once I got here and enrolled in the ROTC program, I realized that my passion was to serve people and to serve my community,' she said.
Andrew says he already has two businesses and plans to keep running them.
'Making sure that 100% of the students graduating from Clayton County Public School has a clear plan that supports their aspirations and dreams,' Dr. Smith said.

Inspired by faith, DeKalb County church goes solar with 340 panels
Solar panels are now installed under the cross on the roof of Dunwoody United Methodist Church. Channel 2's Berndt Petersen said it is the answer to a question the congregation had been wrestling with. 'What are we going to do to be better stewards of the location God has given us in Dunwoody, now Sunwoody?' Senior Pastor Phil Schroeder asked. The best way to be stewards of that gift is to adopt sustainable practices,' Dunwoody City Council Member Tom Lambert said. The church partnered with nonprofit Georgia Interfaith Power and Light, and the Georgia Bright program to reach a solar goal set six years ago and also to fulfill an even higher calling. 'We want to take care of the creation that has been entrusted to us since the very beginning,' Schroeder said. Township to unveil new Veterans Memorial site, honor resident D-Day hero Jim ‘Pee Wee' Martin
Sugarcreek Township will be honoring one of their own and celebrating the brave individuals who serve our country when they unveil a new Veterans Memorial in August. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The memorial, located on the corner of Pine Court and Upper Bellbrook Road, will feature flags and monuments for all the branches of the armed services and the POW/MIA veterans. Specifically, the memorial will feature a statue of Jim 'Pee Wee' Martin. Martin was a paratrooper in World War II, including on D-Day. He served in the 101st Airborne Division and was a member of the 'Screaming Eagles.' Martin lived in Sugarcreek Township from the late 1940s until he died in 2022 at the age of 101 years old. According to Sugarcreek Township Administrator Barry Tiffany, the statue will stand 7 to 8 feet tall and will be positioned on top of a platform block in honor of all the veterans who served in WWII. 'The Veterans Memorial has been a vision item for the community for many years, and we have the funding now to make it a reality,' Tiffany said. The memorial has been in the works since 2022, as previously reported by News Center 7. The memorial will honor all Sugarcreek Township residents who have served in the military, past and present. 'Veterans and families can order pavers engraved with veteran information or family messages in support of our veterans,' Tiffany said. DeKalb Co. Watershed replacing pipes for the next 6 months
DeKalb County Watershed crews are replacing water pipes on College Avenue between Sam's Crossing and Lakeshore Drive. It's part of the county's effort to replace its aging infrastructure. Crews say it will take six months to replace this stretch of pipes, which is approximately 7,100 feet long. Drivers can expect delays each Sunday through Friday between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., excluding major holidays. The project is part of the county's $4.27 billion capital improvement program.
