Ramsey needs to be 'managed accordingly'

BBC News12-02-2025

Cardiff City manager Omar Riza says Aaron Ramsey's fitness will have to be "managed accordingly" after his latest return from injury. The Wales captain was not included in Cardiff's matchday squad for the 2-1 defeat against Portsmouth on Tuesday night.Ramsey, 34, played 63 minutes in the FA Cup win against Stoke City on Saturday, his first appearance since injuring his hamstring while playing for Wales last September."He's been out for five months, he's had a lot of injuries," Riza said."The plan for him is not to go game after game after game - he's not able to do it at present. "We have to manage him accordingly which I've said many times."Ramsey only made seven league starts and six substitute appearances for Cardiff last season in a campaign ruined by a knee problem. The former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder looked to have turned a corner this season as he started Cardiff's first four Championship matches, before he suffered a hamstring injury playing for Wales in their 2-1 win against Montenegro.

I realised Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou would be a success after his incredible moment in game vs St Johnstone

Gunn was Norwich manager when Askou arrived on trial at the club in the summer of 2009. 3 Jens Berthel Askou is the new Motherwell manager Credit: Alamy 3 Bryan Gunn had the now manager on trial at Norwich Credit: PA The Canaries happened to be on a pre-season tour of Scotland — where they would play games against Raith Rovers, St Johnstone and Airdrie. Askou scored in the win over Airdrie — but it was an incident in the closed-door victory over Saints that Gunn remembers. He said: 'We'd just got relegated from the Championship and we were offered Jens by his agent so we had him in for the games to have a look at him. 'In the game we played on the training pitch at St Andrews he attacked a clearance and his header must have gone 60 yards back the way it had come. 'That gave us an idea of what he was like. 'He was a central defender and he was tough, uncompromising, competitive and physical. 'I liked what I had seen from Jens and I sat down and had a couple of conversations with him. 'He was quite a steely character — he knew what he wanted. 'For us, he was an easy signing on a free transfer. 'The wages were affordable but I was away from Norwich before we really got the chance to work together. Stuart Kettlewell reveals if he regrets quitting Motherwell in exclusive first interview 'We lost our first game of the season 7-1 to Colchester but he didn't play in it because his work permit hadn't arrived. 'He played in a League Cup tie at Yeovil the following midweek, which we won comfortably, and we stayed down in the West Country because we were playing at Exeter on the Saturday. 'We drew 1-1 there and Jens scored our goal — but by then I was on a train back to Norwich because I'd been sacked on the Friday! 'Paul Lambert came in as the new manager and he brought a few of his own players in. 'Guys like Fraser Forster and Russell Martin joined the club around about that time. 'Jens played a few games but probably not as many as he would have liked to and after a couple of seasons he eventually went back to Denmark. 'Over the years we've kept in touch by text message. 'When I saw he'd started in coaching I'd send him good luck messages and I've probably got a WhatsApp trail for all his moves. 3 Jens Berthel Askou playing for Norwich Credit: Getty 'It's always nice when guys you've maybe helped along the way on their playing or coaching journey get decent jobs. 'It's good to see that he's gone on and worked at very good clubs since he stopped playing — like IFK Gothenburg, Sparta Prague and FC Copenhagen. 'And it's odd that he's ended up in the top division in Scotland as a coach when he started there as a player for Norwich. 'Maybe the fact he was willing to come to us on trial as a player tells you a bit about his character, his willingness to give things a go. 'I was well aware of what had happened with his predecessor at Motherwell and when I saw he'd got the job there on Thursday I sent him a message wishing him well at Fir Park. 'In the message I told him I knew Nick Daws, the Motherwell head of recruitment, and also goalkeeper Aston Oxborough. 'Aston might well have been in the academy at Norwich at the time so it could be that Jens will remember him. 'The agency I work for represents Jack Butland and I'm up in Scotland every now and then for games. 'If I'm at a Rangers versus Motherwell game next season I'll make a point of looking Jens up. 'It's a good career move for him and I wish him all the very best at Motherwell.' Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Jack Grealish has gone from eye-catching showman and heartthrob to miserable bench warmer – and I know who's to blame

WHAT has Pep Guardiola ever done for Jack Grealish? Aside from helping him earn three Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup, a Club World Cup and more than £60million in wages? 6 Jack Grealish helped Manchester City triumph in the Champions League in 2023 - but all has gone wrong ever since Credit: Getty 6 Pep Guardiola's playing style has left Jack out in the cold Credit: AFP 6 Party boy Jack downs a beer on the parade to celebrate City's League title win last season Credit: Alamy Well, the Manchester City manager has also shackled one of English football's greatest showmen and sucked the joy out of its most likeable bloke, reducing an effervescent eye-catcher to a miserable bench-warmer. Grealish at his best, before his £100million move from Aston Villa to Manchester City in 2021, was an old-school flair player and a darling of the terraces for his dribbling ability, as well as being a style icon and heart-throb. Now his four-year spell at the Etihad is coming to an end, with Grealish axed from City's 27-man squad for the Club World Cup which starts in the US this weekend. Grealish is looking for a new club this summer, while City have already signed eight players for a total of £282MILLION in 2025. And it is a wonder why City boss Guardiola ever agreed to lavishing what was then a British record transfer fee on a player who was never likely to fit in. Guardiola is a tactical genius but he likes his players to be as obsessive about football as he is. He demands workaholics. And while Grealish is not a playboy waster, he lives by the old adage 'all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy'. City have usually played in a delicious eye-candy style under Pep, but his philosophy is all about teamwork, about pass-and-move, rather than the type of individual flair for which Grealish was renowned. Topless in the rain It is a testimony to Grealish's lovable personality that when Scotland's Stephen O'Donnell successfully marked him during a 0-0 draw with England at Wembley in the Euros of 2021, he killed him with kindness rather than kicking or insulting the Three Lions man. Jack Grealish racked up £10k bar bill partying with pals in the wake Man City's 5-2 win over Crystal Palace - despite playing 3 minutes O'Donnell had taken advice from teammate John McGinn — a Villa colleague of Grealish — on how best to keep him quiet. 'John had given me some tips,' revealed O'Donnell. 'He told me that if Jack comes on I need to get nibbling in his ear but don't be critical, be complimentary. 'So the second he came on I was telling him how good-looking he was, that I loved his calves, and I was asking him how he got his hair to look like that. 'I was told if I kick him or get him really hard, he gets back up and at you.' That was during Gareth Southgate's reign as England manager, when his reluctance to select Grealish in his starting line-up became a lightning rod. It was seen as proof that the most successful Three Lions boss of the past 60 years was a negative, cautious stick-in-the-mud — the majority of Grealish's 39 caps having come as a substitute. I love Jack. I love everything about him. I love his personality, I love his quality. The guy has courage. Thomas Tuchel, England manager Terrace songs imploring Southgate to bring on 'Super Jackie Grealish' were the soundtrack to many an England match — yet Southgate surprisingly omitted him from his squad for last summer's Euros. Southgate believed, correctly, that Grealish is a player who thrives on being the main man in any team — a playmaker, who demands a lot of the ball, a risk-taker at his best when he can showcase his devilment. That was never going to be the case with England, who are blessed with so much talent in wide and attacking midfield positions — nor at Guardiola's City. England's new manager Thomas Tuchel has said: 'I love Jack. 'I love everything about him. 'I love his personality, I love his quality. 'The guy has courage.' And yet Tuchel hasn't picked Grealish in either of the two squads he has named because of his severe lack of game time at City. Last season, Grealish started just seven Premier League games — and only one after Tuchel started the England job in January. He managed just one goal and one assist in the entire league campaign. Grealish has told Tuchel he is 'not a stop-start player', that he craves rhythm — and Guardiola simply hasn't allowed that to happen during the past two seasons. In January, Guardiola said he wanted to see 'the Jack Grealish that won the Treble'. Grealish played a major role when City swept the board by winning the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup in 2023 — even though his wings had been clipped with less emphasis on dribbling and taking on opponents. But since the iconic image of the boozed-up Brummie standing topless in the piddling rain during City's celebratory bus parade two years ago, Grealish's fortunes have plummeted. Seasons of torment He turns 30 in December but retains his boyish looks and a child-like love of life. His interviews, while on England duty, are great theatre — he is funny, engaging and honest. But despite his charismatic nature, there is also a vulnerability. During one interview, when Grealish's lifestyle had been under the spotlight, the player told the assembled media: 'I just want youse all to like me.' In truth, it is difficult to spend any time in Grealish's company and not like him. Having been assaulted on the pitch by a Birmingham City fan — who was jailed for the incident — during a derby match against Villa, Grealish would have more reason than most to keep his distance from supporters. Yet in an era of roped-off, VIP, multi-millionaire footballers, he is one of the most accessible of big-name players. His down-to-earth qualities were recently displayed when he visited a social club in Wearside in March and stuck £500 behind the bar for fellow drinkers. Whoever does sign Grealish will be recruiting a gem of a player, desperate to express himself after two seasons of torment under Guardiola. Grealish is not a one-dimensional character. He's Jack the Lad and he's Gentleman Jack, too. He is a keen amateur DJ and a Gucci model — which is one of several lucrative commercial deals, ranging from Bose audio equipment to Hellmann's mayonnaise. And he is also an ambassador for Special Olympics GB. His sister Hollie has cerebral palsy and he frequently interacts with disabled people in person and with video messages. His partner Sasha Attwood is a model — like many a Premier League Wag — but the couple are childhood sweethearts who met at school in Solihull. Their first child, Mila, was born in September. Indeed, over the past year or two you would have been more likely to hear about Grealish carrying out a commercial or charitable appearance than playing a game of football. Hopefully that will change this summer. Despite Grealish having two years left on his City contract, Guardiola is happy for him to leave, either on a permanent deal for around £30million to £40million, or on a loan. Everton, who are moving into a swish new stadium next season, are among the leaders in the race to sign him, along with German club Bayer Leverkusen — managed by former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag. Whoever does sign Grealish will be recruiting a gem of a player, desperate to express himself after two seasons of torment under Guardiola. Any lover of football — any lover of life — will enjoy seeing him play with a smile on his face again. 6 Jack is held up and steadied by teammate Kyle Walker in Ibiza, after a three-day bender Credit: Splash 6 Jack's partner, Sasha Attwood, is a model — like many a Premier League Wag — but the couple are childhood sweethearts who met at school in Solihull Credit: Refer to Caption 6 Jack and Sasha welcomed their first child, Mila, in September Unlock even more award-winning articles as The Sun launches brand new membership programme - Sun Club.

Ex-WWE and UFC star Brock Lesnar's daughter Mya stuns NCAA shot put rivals to win first outdoor national title

Before Brock Lesnar was a wrestling legend, UFC star or NFL hopeful, the former WWE champ was actually an NCAA title winner as a heavyweight grappler at Minnesota. Now it's his daughter Mya's turn to add some collegiate hardware to the family mantle place. The 23-year-old Colorado State senior won the NCAA shot put title with a first-round toss of 19.01 meters. She is the first Rams athlete to win an outdoor event title since Loree Smith did so in 2005. Just the sixth Colorado State athlete to win outdoor gold, the younger Lesnar previously won the NCAA indoor shot put title in 2024. What's more, Mya is the only competitor in program history to win both indoor and outdoor titles. 'Heck yeah it was. It was pretty awesome,' Lesnar told the school's athletics website, 'Obviously throws like that don't happen often, and to do it on my first one was pretty cool. I just went calm, hit my cues. [Rams coach Brian] Bedard and I have tons of trust, and that's exactly what we did. Mya Lesnar, daughter of Brock Lesnar, wins the NCAA shot put championship on her FIRST throw (19.01m) 🤯👏 — Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) June 13, 2025 Mya Lesnar of the Colorado State Rams competes in the shot put during the Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Championship held at Hayward Field on Thursday 'I think it had more of an effect for me. It meant more for me to do it on the first one, to start off the competition strong. A lot of the other ladies responded. It was awesome.' While that remained the best throw of the day, Mya would nearly top it with an 18.8-meter effort for the top two results of the day. Remarkably, Rams coach Brian Bedard thinks Mya is actually capable of much more. 'I still think she missed the big one today because in training we've been seeing throws in the 19.30-meter range, so she didn't quite put it together,' Bedard said. 'She probably had a B-plus day for her, but when a training is going so well to have a big margin that she can maybe not hit her best and win it is awesome. 'It was a great start for her. We've been working on the mental game and trying to have some joy when she competes and really simplify some technical cues and managing excitement levels and all that, and I thought she did that today. When she came up and talked to me between throws, she had a really good awareness of what she was doing in the throw and what she was feeling. I just loved her mindset today. It was mature.' To put Mya's top throw into perspective, China's Lijiao Gong won the women's shot put at the Tokyo Games in 2023 with a toss of 20.58. Mya's toss on Thursday would have been good enough for sixth place in that tournament. Conversation online naturally turned to Mya's obvious athleticism. 'If she started doing MMA professionally she might be a problem in the cage,' one person wrote on X. 'She's so strong genetically but I am sure that she worked so hard to make that throw,' another added. 'I look forward to seeing her get a gold medal someday (sic).' Mya has gone viral in recent years both for her sensational athletic ability and her striking resemblance to famous father Brock. Back in 2023 the track and field athlete grabbed headlines after breaking the shot put record at Colorado State with a superb 18.50 attempt, while she also claimed three straight Mountain West Conference titles. Brock, who has not featured in WWE since losing to Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam in 2023, is one of the wrestling's most celebrated stars and a highly-successful combat-sport athlete. At just 25, he became the youngest WWE champion ever in 2002 before briefly leaving to sign with NFL franchise the Minnesota Vikings. After being cut by the team, Lesnar ventured into the MMA world and became UFC heavyweight champion in 2008, defending the title on two occasions before suffering defeat to Cain Velasquez in 2010. He eventually returned to WWE in 2012 before going to enjoy a successful 11-year stint with the organization which included two Royal Rumble wins and several headline pay-per-view events.
