Aaron Ramsey swaps Cardiff manager job for unexpected new playing role
Aaron Ramsey had been the bookmakers' favourite to become the next permanent Cardiff City manager, but instead he will continue his playing career a long way from Wales. The 34-year-old returned to Cardiff for a third stint in 2023, signing a two-year deal after a brief spell with French club Nice. The Bluebirds struggled in the Championship last season and after manager Omer Riza was dismissed in April, Ramsey was appointed interim manager for the final three games of the season. He could do nothing to stop Cardiff slipping into League One, finishing bottom of the Championship as they won just nine of their 46 league games. Despite this, Ramsey was being strongly linked with taking the job on a permanent basis, with the bookmakers considering him favourite for the role. There has been a surprising turn of events, though, as Ramsey will not only turn away from the chance to manage Cardiff, but he will extend his playing career in Mexico. PA report that the former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder has agreed to sign for Pumas, officially known as Club Universidad Nacional. Ramsey and Pumas manager Efrain Juarez share the same agent. The 86-cap Wales international made just eight Championship appearances for Cardiff last season and 10 in all competitions. Hamstring injuries hampered his campaign significantly after a knee problem had limited him to just 13 appearances in the previous campaign. Injuries have been an issue for the Welshman over his career, but will hope to stay fit and enjoy a surprise swansong in Mexico City. Ramsey will be the only British player in the Pumas squad and only the second European after Spaniard Ruben Duarte. Ramsey began his professional career with Cardiff when he became the club's youngest ever player by making his debut in 2007. He signed for Arsenal the following year and went on to make 369 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 64 goals and winning three FA Cups. More Trending The midfielder moved to Juventus on a free transfer in 2019, earning reported £400,000-a-week wages and he won Serie A in his first season with the Old Lady. Ramsey's three games in interim charge returned two draws and a loss, with Cardiff finishing rock bottom of the Championship.

The 34-year-old was appointed caretaker manager of Cardiff for the final three games of the season. He was tasked him with saving them from relegation after sacking Omer Riza but two draws and a defeat saw them drop down. Ramsey's playing contract with the club expires at the end of the month and Cardiff have dithered over whether to offer him the managerial role on a full-time basis. And any hopes of that happening are seemingly over with PA reporting that he is set to sign with the Pumas. Ramsey took on coaching duties in Cardiff's academy since rejoining for his second spell. The 34-year-old was appointed caretaker manager of Cardiff for the final games of the season He played for Arsenal between 2009 and 2019, making 369 appearances and scoring 64 goals. A regular in midfield under Arsene Wenger, he helped the club win two FA Cups and scored in both finals. He then had spells with Juventus, Rangers and Nice before signing for Cardiff in 2023. Ramsey made just 11 appearances in all competitions last season with a hamstring injury keeping him on the sidelines for much of the campaign.

The Bluebirds have suffered two significant setbacks over the last three days in their quest to appoint a new manager; on Friday, Nathan Jones signed a new long-term deal with Championship side Charlton to put all speculation linking him with the position firmly to bed. And secondly on Sunday, it emerged Aaron Ramsey will not be taking the reins at his boyhood club but will instead up sticks and move to Mexico to join Guadalajara-based Pumas in order to prolong his playing career. Reports surfaced on the other side of the Atlantic on Saturday evening that Ramsey had entered into "advanced talks" with the Mexican side. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano followed this up with his own confirmation, adding: "Aaron Ramsey will sign in as new Pumas player in the next days, ready for new chapter in Mexico." Former Oxford United boss Buckingham has always been in the mix and was involved in the interview process which concluded at the end of last month. A shortlist, using the help of an external agency, was then sent to Malaysia for Vincent Tan's final decision. Since then, events have gone awry to say the least. With Jones and Ramsey now off the table, contenders who were in the original running are now back on the agenda. Article continues below Bookmakers place 40-year-old Buckingham as favourite (1/1), ahead of Leicester City coach Brian Barry-Murphy (6/4) and ex-Bolton boss Ian Evatt (10/3). Around a month ago, Buckingham was riding high in the bookies' odds for the job. He was sacked by Oxford last December and has been out of work since. He led the U's to promotion out of League One last year. Buckingham is also said to be in the running for the vacant post at Plymouth Argyle.

He would become the first high-profile British player to play in the Mexican league should the formalities of the move be completed. Ramsey was appointed Cardiff interim manager for the final three games of the Championship season after the club sacked Omer Riza. But the 34-year-old was unable to prevent Cardiff from being relegated to the third tier. He had been eager to discuss the opportunity of taking the role on and combining it with playing duties and, at one point, had been heavy favourite with bookmakers. But the ex-Arsenal and Juventus star had also made it clear that he wants to continue his playing career and lead Wales at the World Cup next summer. 'There's a lot to play for and that World Cup is a massive carrot being dangled,' Ramsey said in April. According to the Press Association, Ramsey has agreed a deal to sign for Pumas - also known a Club Universidad Nacional. They finished sixth in the 2024-25 Mexican standings and qualified for the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Ramsey returned to his boyhood club Cardiff in 2023, but injuries have restricted his game time and he is currently recovering from hamstring surgery. Cardiff are continuing their quest to find a permanent replacement for Riza, having seen top target Nathan Jones agree a new long-term contract with Championship new boys Charlton Athletic. Des Buckingham, Brian Barry-Murphy and Ian Evatt have all been previously considered.

Spurs extend Wales defender Davies' contract
Tottenham Hotspur have exercised the option to extend Wales defender Ben Davies' contract, which will now run until the summer of 2026. The 32-year-old is Spurs' longest-serving player, having joined from Swansea City in 2014. Advertisement Davies' current deal was due to expire this summer and Tottenham say they are "delighted" he will be staying for the 2025-26 season. Capable of playing at left-back or centre-back, Davies has made 358 appearances in all competitions for Spurs, scoring nine goals and captaining the team 13 times. He is currently with the Wales squad preparing for Monday's World Cup qualifier in Belgium. Davies has regularly worn the captain's armband for his country in the absence of injured midfielder Aaron Ramsey and led Wales to a 3-0 win over Liechtenstein on Friday.
