Northern Ireland forward hopes League One switch will ignite international career: ‘I just want to get as many caps as I can'

Northern Ireland forward Dale Taylor has revealed that his move from Nottingham Forest to Blackpool was motivated by his ambition to earn more caps for his county. The striker quit the Premier League club to sign a four-year deal at Bloomfield Road for fee believed to be north of £1m. The League One star has earned nine caps for Northern Ireland, making his senior debut in 2021. He explained: 'It's a big factor in my move. 'It all comes down to how well you are playing for your football club. Getting the call-up for Northern Ireland is massive. There's no better feeling than playing for your country - I've said it plenty of times. 'A boy from Belfast playing for Northern Ireland at Windsor Park is unbelievable - there's no better feeling than that. 'I'm young. I'm inexperienced but experienced at the same time. I just want to get as many caps as I can.' Several League One clubs were keen to land Taylor after a successful loan stint with Wigan Athletic in the division last term. He said: 'There were a few clubs in there, and Blackpool were one of them. I spoke to the manager (Steve Bruce) and some of my friends, and they all had good things to say about this club and where it's going, so that made it really easy. 'When people speak good about the club, it just stands out. Steve Bruce is a great manager and everything he's done in his career is unbelievable, so it gave me that hunger to work under him. I can't wait to get going and to improve. 'I'm here to do the best I can for the club, myself, my teammates, and the fans. I've been around League One for a couple of years now on loan, and I've really enjoyed it. Every loan got better and improved. 'The goal here is to aim to get to the Championship and get promoted. That's every player's aim, the manager and the staff - hopefully we can do that.' Taylor made his Blackpool debut during Tuesday night's 1-0 loss to Port Vale in the Carabao Cup. He will hope to make his league debut on Saturday when the Seasiders host Huddersfield Town.

Jacob Bethell to become youngest man to captain England in Ireland series

Jacob Bethell is set to become the youngest man to captain England in an international fixture after being installed as skipper for the three-match T20I series against Ireland in September. Bethell will stand in for Harry Brook with England's regular white-ball skipper and other three-format players rested from the engagement in Malahide. The highly-rated Warwickshire batting all-rounder, who appeared in the fifth Test against India, will surpass the record of Monty Bowden, who was 23 years old and 144 days when he led England Men in a Test match against South Africa at Cape Town in 1888/89. Bethell will not turn 22 until October. Brook will lead England in the three ODIs and three T20s against South Africa that begin on 2 September, with fast bowler Sonny Baker an eye-catching call-up to the squad. Baker, who is capable of bowling in excess of 90mph, has impressed for Hampshire in the County Championship and T20 Blast this summer and produced several strong showings for the Manchester Originals in The Hundred. 'Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads and the series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage,' Luke Wright, England men selector, explained. 'Sonny is a player we have identified for a while and he was impressive during the England Lions tours last winter. He has carried that form into this season in white-ball cricket with Hampshire and Manchester Originals and deservedly gets his opportunity.' England remain without Mark Wood but have plenty of pace in their white-ball set-up, with all of Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse, Saqib Mahmood and Jamie Overton included in the ODI group for the South Africa series. Left-arm quick Luke Wood is included in the two T20 squads, while Rehan Ahmed provides leg-spinning back-up to Adil Rashid after an encouraging season with bat and ball at Leicestershire Liam Dawson retains his place after his recall for the West Indies encounters earlier in the summer, while Tom Hartley is a possible debutant in the Ireland T20 series - the Lancashire spinner went to last year's World Cup in the format but did not make an appearance. ODI Squad v South Africa: Harry Brook (Yorkshire) - Captain Rehan Ahmed (Leicestershire) Jofra Archer (Sussex) Sonny Baker (Hampshire) Tom Banton (Somerset) Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire) Jos Buttler (Lancashire) Brydon Carse (Durham) Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire) Will Jacks (Surrey) Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire) Jamie Overton (Surrey) Adil Rashid (Yorkshire) Joe Root (Yorkshire) Jamie Smith (Surrey) IT20 Squad v South Africa: Harry Brook (Yorkshire) – Captain Rehan Ahmed (Leicestershire) Jofra Archer (Sussex) Tom Banton (Somerset) Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire) Jos Buttler (Lancashire) Brydon Carse (Durham) Liam Dawson (Hampshire) Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire) Will Jacks (Surrey) Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire) Jamie Overton (Surrey) Adil Rashid (Yorkshire) Phil Salt (Lancashire) Jamie Smith (Surrey) Luke Wood (Lancashire) IT20 Squad v Ireland: Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire) - Captain Rehan Ahmed (Leicestershire) Sonny Baker (Hampshire) Tom Banton (Somerset) Jos Buttler (Lancashire) Liam Dawson (Hampshire) Tom Hartley (Lancashire) Will Jacks (Surrey) Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire) Jamie Overton (Surrey) Matthew Potts (Durham) Adil Rashid (Yorkshire) Phil Salt (Lancashire)

Jacob Bethell to captain England in T20 series against Ireland

Jacob Bethell is set to become England's youngest-ever men's captain in an international match after being selected to lead the side in three T20s in Ireland next month. The 21-year-old is on the Test fringes but he is already a white-ball mainstay and the esteem with which he is held in is emphasised by his appointment to captain England from September 17-21 in Dublin. When he does so, Bethell will eclipse the existing record held by Monty Bowden, who was 23 years and 144 days old when he oversaw England in a Test against South Africa at Cape Town in 1888-89. 'Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads,' said national selector Luke Wright. 'The series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage.' Bethell has received the opportunity as Harry Brook takes a breather following the ODI and T20 series against South Africa from September 2-14, the squads for which were also announced on Friday. Assistant Marcus Trescothick will step up as head coach in Ireland, with Brendon McCullum not making the trip, reprising the role he had in England's white-ball tour of the Caribbean last winter. All-format quartet Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith, Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse have also been taken out of the firing line against Ireland, giving them a rest in preparation for this winter's blockbuster Ashes. Fast bowling duo Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson are not in any of the three squads as they start focusing on this winter's tour to Australia, which gets under way on November 21 in Perth. Wood had knee surgery in March and missed the entirety of the Test series against India. It was hoped he would play some part against South Africa or Ireland but his competitive comeback may now not be until England's white-ball trip to New Zealand in October and November, just before the Ashes. Uncapped fast bowler Sonny Baker has been rewarded for a string of encouraging showings in the past 12 months, included in the ODI squad to face the Proteas and in the group to face Ireland. 'Sonny is a player we have identified for a while and he was impressive during the England Lions tours last winter,' added Wright. 'He has carried that form into this season in white-ball cricket with Hampshire and Manchester Originals and deservedly gets his opportunity.' Seamer Matthew Potts and slow left-armer Tom Hartley have been recalled for the brief visit to Ireland but, despite a number of absentees, there is no recall for all-rounders Liam Livingstone or Sam Curran. England ODI squad v South Africa: H Brook (captain), R Ahmed, J Archer, S Baker, T Banton, J Bethell, J Buttler, B Carse, B Duckett, W Jacks, S Mahmood, J Overton, A Rashid, J Root, J Smith. England T20 squad v South Africa: H Brook (captain), R Ahmed, J Archer, T Banton, J Bethell, J Buttler, B Carse, L Dawson, B Duckett, W Jacks, S Mahmood, J Overton, A Rashid, P Salt, J Smith, L Wood. England T20 squad v Ireland: J Bethell (captain), R Ahmed, S Baker, T Banton, J Buttler, L Dawson, T Hartley, W Jacks, S Mahmood, J Overton, M Potts, A Rashid, P Salt, L Wood.
