Assam To Clear 10,000 Bighas Of Encroached Land Amid Mega Eviction Drive
As a part of Assam's massive crackdown against land encroachment by illegal migrants, the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government is now planning to launch a massive eviction drive in upper Assam's Golaghat. The move will clear 10,000 bighas (approximately 3,300 acres) of land in the Rengma Reserve forest at Uriamghat, bordering Nagaland.
The eviction drive will affect nearly 2,000 families who have allegedly encroached on the forest land and turned it into a betel nut plantation linked with the betel mafia.
Fearing the eviction, many people belonging to the Bengali-speaking Muslims who have been branded as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh had fled the area and were trying to take shelter in other places in Assam.
Nearly 700–800 police personnel, along with teams from the Forest Department and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), were stationed in and around the Rengma Forest reserve.
Heavy machinery, including bulldozers and excavators, has also been mobilised for the operation.
The evictions come after extensive land surveys across 30 villages in the reserve forest area under the Sarupathar sub-division.
The Assam government claims that the encroachers originate from Muslim-dominated areas of Nagaon, Morigaon, Sonitpur, and even districts such as Cachar, Dhubri, Barpeta, and Hojai in Assam. Many illegal migrants are also from West Bengal and Bihar, according to the government.
Himanta Biswa stated that 70% of the identified encroachers had already vacated voluntarily and reiterated the government's commitment to restoring forest and government land.
Last week, Mr Sarma had said that 1.29 lakh bighas (over 42,500 acres) of land have been cleared of encroachment in the last four years, while approximately 29 lakh bighas (more than 9.5 lakh acres) of land remain encroached in the state.
Amid a large-scale eviction drive in Assam, the Nagaland government has also issued an advisory to bordering districts to remain on high alert and prevent any spillover of displaced families into its territory during the eviction.
Meanwhile, the prominent Naga radical group NSCN (Niki) has claimed that the recent evictions by the Assam government were neither surprising nor unexpected but a deliberate attempt to seize Naga ancestral lands labelled as the "Disturbed Area Belt", a misleading designation stemming from British colonial boundaries imposed for administrative convenience without consulting the Naga people.
In a statement, NSCN/GPRN (Niki) alleged that successive Assam governments have long pursued the settlement of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants (IBIs) in disputed border areas to facilitate covert territorial occupation.

The police had purportedly written to Banga Bhawan, West Bengal's state guest house in New Delhi, seeking assistance with translating documents written in 'Bangladeshi language' for eight individuals suspected of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. HT has not independently verified the authenticity of the letter, while police have not yet responded. The image shared by Banerjee showed that the letter, dated July 24, said police needed an interpreter 'proficient in Bangladeshi national language' for documents belonging to the eight persons 'strongly suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in India'. TMC national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee demanded an apology from home minister Amit Shah, under whose ministry Delhi Police falls, for the way the letter was written. 'For months now, Bengali-speaking people have been targeted, harassed and detained across BJP-ruled states,' he added, and called the letter 'a shocking escalation' and an attempt to 'undermine Bengali identity' and "equate Indian Bengalis with foreigners'. Reacting to the allegations, Samik Bhattacharya, the West Bengal BJP chief, accused the TMC of resorting to 'fear-mongering tactics' for Indian Bengalis while 'shielding' illegal immigrants. BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya reacted, too, accusing Mamata Banerjee of spreading misinformation for 'vote‑bank politics'. He called her X post 'a badly scripted political stunt'. Bengali artists were incensed by the notice too. "Bangla referred to as Bangladeshi language... Exactly the kind of ignorance I expect from the people responsible... Not surprised at all," wrote singer Surojit Chatterjee. "That's not Bangladeshi language… that's Bangla or Bengali," film director Srijit Mukherji posted on X, 'the same language in which your national anthem was originally written and one of the 22 official languages of India.'

Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi has begun preparations for the Jubilee Hills bypoll, with the party organising on Sunday a meeting of the activists of the constituency. Giving them a pep talk, the party's working president, KT Rama Rao, said that if the Congress was voted again in the by-polls, existing welfare schemes would also be stopped. Rama Rao paid tribute to late Maganti Gopinath and said that the by-election, necessitated by his demise, should be taken seriously. He called on the cadre to work hard to ensure BRS' victory. 'Let us hoist the pink flag once again in Jubilee Hills as a tribute to Gopinath garu,' he told the party workers. He asked each worker to take responsibility for at least 100 votes or 25 households and explain the difference between KCR's administration and the current Congress regime to the public. The government is likely to push on Monday the passage of a key sports Bill in the Lok Sabha, amid a continuing deadlock in Parliament as the Opposition's united demand for a discussion on SIR failed to draw a positive response from the ruling alliance. The Lower House has listed the National Sports Governance Bill, which envisages greater transparency in the functioning of sports bodies, for consideration and passage. The Rajya Sabha has listed for passage on Monday a resolution from Home Minister Amit Shah on the extension of the President's rule in Manipur by another six months with effect from August 13. Except for a two-day discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor in both the Houses, parliamentary proceedings have been all but a washout since the Monsoon session began on July 21 as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar has ignited vociferous protests from opposition parties. The INDIA bloc, which has in previous sessions often spoken in different voices, has joined ranks over the issue, alleging the Election Commission's exercise is aimed at removing voters sympathetic to its agenda and boosting the prospects of the BJP-led NDA. The EC has said it will roll out the exercise nationally to 'protect' the integrity of electoral rolls to ensure that only eligible voters are allowed to cast votes. 'Rahul Gandhi has raised voice against irregularities in elections. He had said that such things had taken place in Karnataka too, so he is coming here to give representation to the Election Commission officials. BRS MLC and Telangana Jagruthi president K Kavitha last week said that she will begin a 72-hour fast from Monday to pressurise both the Congress government in the state and the NDA government at the Centre to approve the Bills providing 42% quota for Backward Classes. Kavitha said the fast will highlight the need for the passage of the BC bill. Kavitha, who has of late been organising political activities under the banner of Telangana Jagruthi, a cultural organisation headed by her, said she had held a 72-hour fast during undivided Andhra Pradesh demanding the installation of a statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar in the premises of the state legislature. The Justice H N Nagmohan Das Commission report, aimed at providing internal reservation among SCs in Karnataka, is likely to be submitted on Monday. Ahead of the report being submitted, state Home Minister G Parameshwara called a meeting of SC legislators on August 2 'to gather the opinions of people in the party from various SC sub-castes, and to ensure that there is no confusion'. 'Ahead of Nagmohan Das Commission submitting the report, we wanted to have a discussion on it, so as to ensure that no one is upset or there is no confusion, and to understand each other's opinion. So I have called a meeting,' Paramehwara said in response to a question. The government, in November last year, had appointed retired judge of the Karnataka High Court Nagmohan Das to head a commission to recommend internal reservation among SCs, after the Supreme Court last year allowed the states to provide internal reservation, and the State Cabinet agreed to implement internal reservation. BJP MPs from West Bengal will meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday in Delhi to strategize on countering allegations raised by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the state Assembly. 'Tomorrow, we will have a meeting with the Home Minister. While it is strictly a party meeting, we will also address the RG Kar issue. The parents of the victim doctor have shared certain insights and provided us with documents that we will present. However, we cannot make any commitments as the CBI is currently investigating the matter,' said BJP State President and MP Shamik Bhattacharya on Sunday. The TMC has been vocal about the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrant workers and their pushback into Bangladesh. Additionally, TMC MPs have been holding protests on the Parliament premises regarding the implementation of the SIR (Special Investigation Report) in Bihar, which they oppose in West Bengal.
