New York-native shooting champion returns home with gold
ENDICOTT, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – An Endicott native returned home from a national shooting competition with golden hardware.
Albert Fiori competed, and won a gold medal in the national trap shooting competition in West Palm Beach last week. Fiori has competed in Olympic style parashooting events before. Fiori was first diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder and nerve disease a few years ago.
Over 100 athletes competed, and had to shoot a total of 250 targets in the qualification round just to make it into the finals.
Fiori made it to the finals and took home first place in the 'senior trap' division of older competitors.

Ariarne Titmus: 'I know that the LA Olympics will be my last'
Australian swimmer Ariarne Titmus, who is taking this season off from competing, does plan to return for a 2028 Olympic bid while repeating that she's at 'the tail end' of her career. 'I know that the LA Olympics will be my last,' Titmus, 24, said on a Two Am I podcast episode published Friday. 'So I just don't want to be an athlete that retires from their sport and is lost and has nothing to do, and I think that it was so important for me to channel different areas of my life to know that when I do leave the sport behind, I'm going to be all right.' Titmus won Olympic 200m and 400m freestyle titles at Tokyo 2020, then earned gold in the 400m free and the 4x200m free relay at the Paris Games. She has been American Katie Ledecky's primary rival for several years. Australia hosts the 2032 Brisbane Games, when Titmus will be 31. No Australian female swimmer over the age of 30 has ever competed at the Olympics, according to the OlyMADMen. After the 2023 World Championships, Titmus told her coach, Dean Boxall, that she would be 'running on fumes' by the end of 2024. 'I just know for myself, mentally more than anything, I just need to give myself a break, and a long break,' she said on the podcast, adding that she had swum 3,000 meters total since last summer. 'I need to give myself almost like an unlimited timeline to allow the hunger and motivation to build back up. I mean, I've been training the volume that I have been since I was 13, and up until I was 21, I'd had no more than two weeks at a time off. 'So, after Tokyo, I had two months (off). I enjoyed myself, but it didn't quite feel long enough. So I thought, if I want to make it through the next cycle, I'm going to have to give myself some time to just enjoy life a little bit.' Last November, fellow Australian swim star Kaylee McKeown was quoted saying that she plans to make LA 2028 her final Olympics, too. McKeown would be bypassing a chance to bid for the 2032 Games that will be held 19 miles north of her birthplace. 'I already know within myself I want to go because it will be my last Olympics, and I want to enjoy the sport, I love the sport, and I don't want to do it for anyone else or any other purpose but myself,' McKeown said then, according to News Corp Australia. McKeown, 23, swept the 100m and 200m backstrokes in Tokyo and Paris and has continued to compete since then. McKeown's total Olympic gold medals (five, including in the Tokyo women's 4x100m medley relay) and total Olympic medals (nine) have been bettered by only one athlete in Australian history across all sports: swimming teammate Emma McKeon, who announced her retirement last November. Shaq makes bold claim about Jayson Tatum's Hall of Fame credentials
Shaquille O'Neal isn't buying Jayson Tatum's Hall of Fame résumé just yet. Tatum is an NBA champion, six-time All-Star and five-time All-NBA selection at 27, but O'Neal is not convinced those accolades are enough to warrant the Celtics star entry into the Hall. On his 'The Big Podcast,' Shaq didn't seem swayed as his co-host, Adam Lefkoe, made Tatum's Hall of Fame case. Olympic swimmer engulfed in ‘inappropriate' behaviour accusations makes fiery statement
Luana Alonso will no longer stay silent. The Paraguayan swimmer who reportedly was booted out of the Olympic Village during last year's Summer Games has fired back at 'false rumours' surrounding her departure from Paris. Alonso posted a fiery statement on her Instagram stories this week, hitting out at the reports that she was removed for creating an 'inappropriate atmosphere.' 'Let me make this clear: I left the Olympic Village on my own,' she wrote on Wednesday. 'These are false rumours that have hurt my name and my career.' Alonso ignited a firestorm at the Games last summer, going viral for alleged behaviour behind the scenes at the village. The 21-year-old swimmer competed for Paraguay in the women's 100-metre butterfly, but failed to reach the semifinals – and then seemingly announced her abrupt retirement from the sport in a post on Instagram. But instead of heading home, Alonso stayed in the French capital to see the sights – which were well-documented on her social media account – before reportedly got her booted by her country's Olympic committee for creating an 'inappropriate atmosphere.' 'Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay,' Larissa Schaerer, the head of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee (COP), said in a statement at the time. But, 11 months later, Alonso is now firing back at the accusations. 'The Paraguayan Olympic team claimed I created an 'inappropriate environment' simply because I decided I didn't want to swim anymore,' she said. 'They tried to take my accreditation away, but that's not something they had the right to do. I chose not to hand it over and apparently that was 'inappropriate' to them.' The Daily Mail also reported that Alonso was accused of being a distraction to her fellow competitors with her socializing and attire. She was often seen sporting stylish outfits as opposed to team uniforms and opted to take a trip to Disneyland Paris instead of cheering on her compatriots. 'I was judged for wearing skinny clothes, for socializing, and for not conforming,' she added. 'That's not inappropriate — that's being a young adult. 'I had finished racing. I was no longer obligated to stay. If others saw that as disrespectful, that's on them.' Alonso reportedly checked into a Parisian hotel after leaving the Olympic Village, and visited high-end stores and restaurants. But despite the contentious nature between herself and her country's Olympic committee, the Southern Methodist University alum claims she was asked by Paraguayan swimming officials to return to the pool for the Pan American Junior Games, which are being held in the country's capital, Asunción, this August. 'If I had been treated like a human being, maybe I would have stayed,' she said. 'But they made me feel like a problem.'
