The weary weight of womanhood

The weary weight of womanhood

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Dream Count explores the lives of three Nigerian women, Chiamaka, Zikora, and Omelogor, and one Guinean woman, Kadiatou, and their dreams and destinies. Chiamaka, a travel writer, recalls her past lovers as she is stuck at home during the Covid pandemic. Zikora is a successful lawyer who believes she has failed at other aspects of life. Omelogor is a banker who launders money to help poor women start their businesses. Kadiatou works in housekeeping at a hotel where she faces a tragedy that upends the life she had built for herself and her daughter in America. What unites these women is the resilience they have had to build to survive in a world that is tainted with misogyny and violence.
Through Chiamaka, Adichie captures the emotional exhaustion brought on by the covid pandemic. 'Every morning, I was hesitant to rise, because to get out of bed was to approach again the possibility of sorrow,' she writes. She recalls her relationship with a man, Darnell, which had turned into an obsession. With Darnell, Chiamaka had to fight for every morsel of intimacy. Darnell mocked her for her wealth while he enjoyed the benefits of the same wealth – fancy birthday trips, expensive gadgets, fine wine and dining. Chia wants to talk to Omelogor about Darnell but resists doing so because she is afraid of the self-respect and strength Omelogor brings out in her. When Chia finally finds a man who seems dream-like, she realises her desires might differ from what society wants her to desire.

Saiyaara Casting Director Shanoo Sharma On Training Ahaan Panday: "We Got Sharvari And Him To Do Scenes"

New Delhi: July has been a spectacular year for Bollywood with Mohit Suri's Saiyaara smashing all box office records. Led by debutant Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, the film has turned out to be a phenomenon of sorts. Yash Raj Films casting director Shanoo Sharma, who is also basking in the immense success of the film and having found talents like Ahaan and Aneet recently, shared how he did improvisation and scenes with Sharvari of Munjya fame. What's Happening Ahaan Panday is 2025's biggest breakout star in Bollywood, yet. The actor has been all over social media and news with his stellar debut in Mohit Suri's Saiyaara. YRF Casting director Shanoo Sharma recently revealed how Ahaan Panday had trained for 3 years, before COVID hit, and his debut was postponed. The fame has been overnight, but the struggle and wait have been over 9 years. Shanoo Sharma told The Hollywood Reporter, "The first three years went into training. We trained, and we trained, and Sharvari was also on that bandwagon. So we got Sharvari and him to do improvisation and scenes, and scenes, and scenes. So I was training them personally. After that, COVID hit. So when he had his whole waiting period, he joined The Railway Men as an AD." She added, "He saw the world moving ahead; he saw everybody from his generation moving ahead. I don't know, I think it must have irked him within, and you could see that if you knew him well enough, but I don't think it ever broke his spirit. The one thing Ahaan has is spirit. He has a spirit on another level. So I don't think it broke that." ‘Tunes come out of nowhere, even in my sleep'

Jay Unnithan aka JK didn't grow up in a musical household. But somewhere between A R Rahman tracks on loop, old keyboards and hotel gigs, a composer began to take shape. Today, JK's songs are catching on — from the peppy, feel-good Trishanku tracks to the punchy score of Maranamass. Excerpts from a quick chat: Has music always been a part of you, or was it a chance stumbling? I was around 12 when music really caught my attention. My dad sang well, but we didn't have a musical background. It was A R Rahman's tracks, especially Chandralekha, that got me hooked. My sister and her friends had it on loop. I thought, 'Someday, maybe I will make music like that.' At 14, I joined keyboard classes, but didn't have my own instrument. I practised at my neighbour's place. In Class 10, I was picked for the school band. That boosted my confidence. Music soon became an integral part of my life. When did music become something core to you? Knowingly or unknowingly, music always stayed with me. I pursued engineering. By third year, I was performing in hotels, backing a singer. After graduation, I moved to Mumbai for a job but got frustrated. I quit and joined a music school. That might've seemed like an odd move, but it was a turning point. Subsequently, I was asked to join as a faculty member. Soon, I started performing in clubs across Mumbai and even played for artists such as Shaan, KK, Jonita Gandhi, Ayushmann Khurrana, and Shankar Mahadevan. As the shows picked up, I left teaching. A part of me always wanted to compose. So, I began reaching out to composers, taught myself the technical side, bought gear, and built a home setup. In many ways, I am a self-taught composer. How did you land your debut project, Trishanku? Technically, Trishanku was not my debut. It was just the first to be released. Between 2018 and '19, while juggling shows and ad jingles, I met Vishnu Shyamaprasad, son of director Shyamaprasad. He narrated a film, I sent a sample, and got on board. That film, however, is yet to be released. Later, Vishnu produced Trishanku and brought me in. I began working on it in 2021, but it was released in 2023 due to Covid delays. That downtime helped. With shows and ads paused, I had space to experiment. I had no studio experience or team — Trishanku was my solo production. And then came Maranamass. How did that happen? The director (Sivaprasad) and I had collaborated on an ad project, and discussed doing a film together. Soon after, he reached out for Maranamass. Within a month, we started composing. That project taught me how to manage a team.

Abhay Daga is one of them. He is a famous television actor. Nevertheless, acting was never his end goal. While most performers become consumed by the glamour and fame, Abhay took the opportunity to take a step back and pursue a greater cause. This choice was not simply about a career change; it was his commitment to service to the nation. Even though Abhay Daga had a bright career path in the TV industry and at Microsoft, which many could only dream of, he took the biggest leap of his life. In 2021, he quit his job at Microsoft with a package of lakhs without a second thought and began preparing full-time for the UPSC exam since then.
