One candidate dies, another suspends campaign in separate races leading up to Aug. 5 primary election

Yahoo5 days ago
Aug. 1—Some voters in the Lewis County primary election on Tuesday, Aug. 4, have two less candidates to consider on the ballot for Winlock mayor and Lewis County Fire District 5 commissioner in Napavine.
In primary elections, the top two candidates advance to November's general election.
On July 27, Tom Crowson, who was running for Fire District 5 commissioner, died, according to a death notice received by The Chronicle. On July 28, the Lewis County Republican Party posted a statement on its official Facebook page announcing Crowson's death.
"(The) Lewis County Republican Party mourns the loss of Tom Crowson, a good man, a good friend and a vital part of our community. Tom came to Washington state after serving as a firefighter in California. He continued in service to his community through many roles. He was part of the Lewis County Board of Equalization and was a former commissioner for Fire District 5," the Facebook post stated. "From running for Congress in 2004 to a campaign for Lewis County Assessor in 2022, Tom was always a proud Republican and worked hard to support our candidates. We will miss Tom, and we offer prayers of peace and comfort to Tootie who was always by his side."
Lewis County Chief Deputy Auditor Tom Stanton said Crowson's name can only be removed from Tuesday's primary ballot if a Lewis County Superior Court judge orders it.
Additionally, if Crowson is one of the top two candidates after the primary, his name will still be advanced to the general election on Nov. 4. The other two candidates running for District 5 commissioner in Fire District 5 are Rick LeBoeuf and incumbent Fire District 5 Commission Chairman Sam Patrick.
In the Winlock mayoral race, which started off with four candidates vying to be the South Lewis County community's next leader, America Lunsford's campaign informed The Chronicle she is no longer actively campaigning.
"Unfortunately due to an urgent personal matter, America has had to suspend her campaign as of this week, and will no longer be actively running, regardless of the primary outcome," an America for Mayor team member said in an email.
The team was asked if Lunsford was endorsing any one of the remaining three candidates.
"After some further thought, she will endorse Victoria Marincin. If America ends up winning the primary she would support a write-in campaign for Victoria in the general as well," an America for Mayor team member said in an email.
Still running for mayor in Winlock are Victoria Marincin, Winlock City Councilor Jodie Curtis and incumbent Mayor Brandon Svenson, who is seeking a second term.

Stock market today: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq futures rise as Trump hints at chip tariff carveout

US stock futures edged higher on Thursday as President Trump's sweeping tariffs hit dozens of US trade partners after his self-imposed deadline for countries to strike deals expired. At the same time, Trump's hint of a carveout for coming duties on semiconductors boosted tech for a second consecutive day. Futures attached to the Dow Jones Industrial Average (YM=F) gained 0.6%. Futures attached to the benchmark S&P 500 (ES=F) were up 0.7%, and those on tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 (NQ=F) rose 0.8%. Trump's deadline for trade deals landed at 12:01 a.m. ET on Thursday. Imports from nearly 200 countries now face duties ranging from 10% to 50%, and the overall average effective tariff rate is projected to jump to 18.3%. As part of the deal, Apple will manufacture the cover glasses for iPhones and Apple Watches in Kentucky. The president also revealed at the press conference that he plans to eventually set a 100% tariff on semiconductors. Companies like Apple that commit to building in the US, however, will be exempt from the tariff, he said. Airbnb (ABNB), DoorDash (DASH), and Lyft (LYFT) reported earnings after the bell. DoorDash shares jumped premarket on an upbeat forecast driven by resilient delivery demand. Airbnb and Lyft, meanwhile, fell on disappointing guidance. Trump's Higher Tariffs Are Here. Now What?

Good morning. The next phase of President Trump's trade war is here, as scores of trading partners and imported products now face significantly higher tariffs. That will raise costs for many companies — except for those who have placated Trump with acceptable-enough promises to invest in the U.S. — and continue to scramble the outlook for global business. We dive into the latest below. Tariff tantrum Bruising tariffs went into effect a few hours ago on more than 90 countries as President Trump's trade war enters a new phase. The president has signaled that there's more to come. Trading partners are scrambling to negotiate better terms, while many of their industries — Japan's automakers, for one — reel from the protectionist attack. Here's a country-by-country tariff tracker. But investors appear to be shrugging off the potential hit to global commerce. Stocks in Asia and Europe were trading mostly higher, helped by decent earnings that suggest that some companies are holding up. That's in part because many deeply involved in international trade, like the shipping giant Maersk and Chinese exporters, have found resilient demand outside the U.S. S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite futures are gaining, too. The latest: Shares in Toyota fell after the Japanese auto giant forecast a $9.5 billion hit from tariffs, and lowered its full-year profit guidance. Several overseas chipmakers appear to have dodged a blow from a new 100 percent levy that Trump threatened on semiconductor imports. That tax would be waived for those companies already 'building' in America, Trump said; shares in TSMC and Samsung, which have large U.S. manufacturing hubs, are rallying on Thursday. The Magnificent Seven group of tech giants hit a record on Wednesday, buoyed by a surge in Apple shares. (More on that in a second.) Nvidia's stock gained as Jensen Huang, the chipmaker's C.E.O., met with Trump. Is Apple out of Trump's doghouse? Tim Cook separately joined Trump at the White House, announcing a commitment to invest an additional $100 billion in the U.S. Cook had a 24-karat gold gift for the president and said that 'every single new iPhone and every single new Apple Watch sold anywhere in the world will contain cover glass made in Kentucky.' It will be worth watching if the commitment will be enough to dissuade Trump from imposing tariffs on Apple products. (Remember that the iPhone maker has a history of pledging huge sums — in February it vowed to invest $500 billion domestically, drawing Trump's praise — but hasn't always followed through.)
