Summer McIntosh caps swimming world championships with fourth gold
McIntosh, an 18-year-old from Toronto, finished the race in 4 minutes, 25.78 seconds, nearly 7.5 seconds better than Australia's Jenna Forrester and Japan's Mio Narita.
McIntosh also secured gold in the 200-meter butterfly, 200-meter medley and 400-meter freestyle as well as the bronze in the 800-meter freestyle.
She joined American star Katie Ledecky as the only other female swimmer to claim four individual golds at a world championships, with the latter winning the 200-, 400-, 800- and 1,500-meter freestyle in 2015.
Also yesterday, the United States' women's 4x100 medley team of Regan Smith, Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske broke their own record by finishing the event in 3:49.34, that was 0.29 better than the previous mark.
"This is the best way to end the meet," Walsh said. "And I feel like we have such a good opportunity when you have this stacked group of women closing it out on a relay like this.
"We're going to leave Singapore with a smile on our faces."
From a team perspective, the Americans recorded nine gold medals — one better than Australia.
France finished third followed by Canada, which saw McIntosh win all of its golds. — REUTERS

Soccer-Former West Germany World Cup winner Mill dies aged 67
(Reuters) -Former West Germany striker and World Cup winner Frank Mill has died aged 67, the German FA (DFB) said on Tuesday. The Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Moenchengladbach player was part of the West Germany squad at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where they lifted the trophy after a 1-0 victory over defending champions Argentina in the final. German media said Mill suffered a heart attack in May shortly after getting in a taxi in Milan. He was later flown back to Germany but never recovered. Born in Essen, Mill earned 17 caps and was part of his country's squad that claimed bronze at the 1988 Olympic Games. "We mourn the loss of Frank Mill, our 1990 world champion," the DFB said in a statement. "Rest in peace, Frank. Our thoughts are with his family and friends." The 25-year-old former Vuelta a Espana winner, who won gold in the road race and time trial at last year's Paris Games, joined Soudal Quick-Step in 2019, and was contracted to the team until the end of 2026. "Representatives of Remco informed the team's management that he did not wish to discuss an extension of his current agreement," Soudal Quick-Step said in a statement. "The team's ownership and management have decided that it is in best interest of everyone to agree that Remco can move at the end of the current 2025 season." In December, Evenepoel collided with the open door of a vehicle while training in Belgium, suffering multiple fractures, a dislocated collarbone and contusions to both lungs. He underwent surgery and worried he might have to retire, but returned to competition in April. Evenepoel was third overall when he abandoned the Tour de France during the 14th stage last month.
