Times of Oman08-07-2025
Muscat: Muscat Municipality on Tuesday announced the winners of the Muscat Municipality Design Competition 2025 during the competition's closing ceremony, held under the patronage of His Highness Sayyid Dr. Kamil Fahad Mahmood Al-Said, Secretary General in the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers.
The ceremony was attended by Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Humaidi, Chairman of Muscat Municipality, along with several dignitaries, officials, and a distinguished group of engineering experts and consultants from within and outside the Sultanate of Oman.
The German firm KSP Engel, known for its work on cultural and institutional buildings, was awarded first place in this edition of the competition, which was launched to design a landmark multi-use building in the Wilayat of Bausher. Second place went to Bisan Mohammadi Architects (BMA) from North Macedonia, while third place was awarded to Xavier De Geyter Architects (XDGA) from Belgium.
In his opening remarks, H.E. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Humaidi said: 'This competition represents an important milestone in Muscat's urban development journey. It is inspiring to see how these design proposals embody innovation and sustainability while preserving our rich cultural heritage. We are shaping Muscat's future in line with our identity and values, which are at the heart of our development strategy.'
He further explained that the results of the competition will play a key role in driving urban development in Muscat, ensuring that modernisation aligns with the preservation of Omani architectural identity.
The two-day closing event, organised by Muscat Municipality on 7 and 8 July 2025, at the Mandarin Oriental Muscat, generated strong momentum and engagement. Day one featured live presentations by the five finalist teams before the jury and attendees. These were:
Bisan Mohammadi Architects (BMA) – North Macedonia
Paolo Vimercati Urban Projects and Architectural Designs (POV) – United Kingdom
Samyn and Partners for Sustainable Architecture – Belgium
Xavier De Geyter Architects (XDGA) – Belgium
KSP Engel – Germany
Each firm presented comprehensive designs that creatively blended modern innovation with elements of Omani culture, tailored for a prominent civic landmark.
The competition's jury was chaired by Don Murphy, founder and partner at VMX Architects, and comprised a distinguished panel of Omani and international consultants and engineers.
The jury adopted clear values and criteria to ensure the highest standards of integrity and transparency in the evaluation process, with a focus on sustainability and cultural alignment.
Murphy commended the participants' efforts during the winner announcement, noting that each submission brought a unique vision to enrich Muscat's urban landscape and community life.
Launched earlier this year, the competition was initiated by Muscat Municipality to design a multi-use civic landmark in the Wilayat of Bausher.
It attracted top architectural firms from around the world, inviting innovative concepts for a sustainable, iconic building that reflects Omani identity while meeting the needs of modern civic life. The winning project will be built on an 8,000-square-metre plot near Oman Avenues Mall, offering a striking architectural presence that blends heritage with the aspirations of a modern city.

Padel meets peaks: International players compete in Jabal Akhdar tournament as dusitD2 Naseem champions sports tourism

Jabal Akhdar: Top padel players from across Oman and abroad converged at the scenic heights of Jabal Akhdar on Friday to compete in an exhilarating tournament hosted by dusitD2 Naseem Resort. More than just a sporting event, the tournament served as a dynamic initiative to blend tourism with athletic excellence, drawing both sports enthusiasts and inhouse guests to the mountainside venue. The event is part of a broader vision set by the resort to transform itself into a leading integrated tourism destination in Oman. 'Our vision is to evolve into a truly integrated resort,' said Jagdeep Thakral, General Manager of dusitD2 Naseem. 'Initially, we were known as a family resort. But with the growth in corporate retreats, school group visits, and now competitive sporting events, we are repositioning ourselves as a destination that offers it all.' According to Thakral, the resort's integrated complex is built on five core pillars. 'First is adventure. We've developed the Sultanate's only full-fledged adventure park. Adding to it we have mountain biking trails, and scooters to bring adrenaline to the mountains,' he said. The resort's top official added: 'The second is sport. Our padel and volleyball courts are unmatched in the area, giving us an edge in hosting tournaments and sports events.' Thakral then pointed out to the third pillar- culture. 'The resort offers an immersive Arabic experience through traditional cuisine such as Zarb, live Arabic music featuring the oud, and upcoming Tanoura dance performances to captivate guests,' he said. The general manager said that 'sustainability and nature' is the fourth pillar. 'As part of its green initiative, the resort has planted 400–500 rose bushes, 200 olive trees, and other flora to create a vibrant natural landscape,' he added. And the last pillar is 'shopping and lifestyle'. Thakral said that 'plans are underway to establish a local-style souq (market), bringing authentic shopping experiences directly to visitors.' 'The first padel tournament is a direct extension of this vision. No other mountain destination in Oman offers such a holistic experience under one roof,' he said. Looking ahead, dusitD2 Naseem is set to launch a series of high-adrenaline adventure events, including the Mountain Man Challenge, the Celebrity Challenge, and the Jabal Akhdar Challenge, among others.

Khazaen Dry Port enhances integration with Sohar Port

Muscat: Khazaen Dry Port, part of Asyad Group, has been officially designated as a final destination for receiving containers from global ports. The port has also inaugurated a secure customs corridor with Sohar Port, reinforcing the integration of Omani ports and boosting the efficiency of national supply chains. The secure customs corridor represents a qualitative leap in supporting the import, export, and re-export ecosystem for Oman's private sector. It enables traders and investors to transport goods smoothly and reliably within a streamlined customs environment, enhancing logistical efficiency, reducing operational costs, and providing Omani companies with seamless access to global markets—strengthening their competitiveness and supporting private sector growth. The project features an advanced customs system that allows clearance from a single station at Khazaen Port, utilising shipping agent guarantees instead of traditional customs bonds and accepting written guarantees. This reduces time and effort while improving the beneficiary experience. These measures reflect Asyad Group's commitment to facilitating cross-border trade and providing a flexible, secure business environment aligned with global best practices. They also bolster the growth of the commercial and logistics sectors, solidifying Khazaen Dry Port's position as a pivotal, integrated hub at the heart of supply chains.
