GE Vernova to Invest $41M in Facility Expansion: Time to Buy the Stock?

GE Vernova Inc. (GEV) recently announced a plan to invest $41 million to expand generator capacity at its Schenectady, NY, facility, in a bid to meet rising global energy demand. The investment will enhance the company's gas power capacity through expanding the assembly and testing of the H65 and H84 generators, which pair with its most efficient HA gas turbines. This expansion comes as part of the company's larger plan of investing $9 billion through 2028, with GEV having announced $720 million in investments at its U.S. manufacturing facilities so far this year. This strategic expansion solidifies GE Vernova's pivotal role in the global energy transition, making it an increasingly attractive investment for those seeking a resilient and forward-looking energy stock. However, before making an investment, it would be prudent to delve deep into the company's recent performance at the bourses, future growth prospects as well as risks (if any) to investing in the same. This way, one can make an informed decision. GEV Stock Outperforms Industry, Sector & S&P 500 Shares of GE Vernova have surged an impressive 33.1% in the past three months, outperforming the Zacks Alternative-Energy industry's growth of 13.7% and the broader Zacks Oils-Energy sector's rise of 5.5%. It has also outpaced the S&P 500's growth of 10.9% over the same period. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research A similar stellar performance has been delivered by other industry players, such as Bloom Energy (BE) and Talen Energy Corp. (TLN), whose shares have surged 136.7% and 56.4%, respectively, in the past three months. What's Been Pushing GEV Stock Up? GE Vernova's advanced technologies support industries across the board in the global shift to sustainable energy, reducing emissions. Its expanding clean energy and low-carbon footprint initiatives, as mentioned below, are boosting investor confidence, which must have resulted in its significant three-month share price growth. Impressively, in July 2025, GEV received an order to supply 29 LM2500XPRESS units to Crusoe AI data centers. In the same month, GE Vernova announced second-quarter 2025 results, which highlighted a 4% increase in orders, 11% growth in revenues and a more than $5 billion rise in backlog. The company also announced its decision to acquire France's AI-specialist, Alteia, to integrate its AI-powered visual intelligence platform into utility operations. GEV also received a contract to build a critical substation in Germany. Further, its nuclear energy unit and Fortum entered into an early works agreement to enhance the potential deployment of the BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) in Finland and Sweden. In June, the company announced plans to invest $50 million to establish a cutting-edge Canadian BWRX-300 Engineering and Service Centre in the Durham region near the Ontario Power Generation Darlington New Nuclear Project site. In the same month, GE Vernova received a contract to upgrade three GT26 gas turbines at Uniper's Grain power plant, starting 2026. Earlier in May, GEV secured an order for five 7H-Class gas turbines from Saudi Arabia. Will GEV Hold On To Its Winning Streak? The International Energy Agency ('IEA') projects wind to become the second largest source of global renewable electricity generation, surpassing hydropower, by 2030-end, with onshore wind capacity additions expected to almost double and continue dominating wind capacity growth. This should bode well for GE Vernova's wind business, supported by consistent investments and a 57,000-unit turbine fleet. Moreover, investments into the grid, the backbone of the electric power system, is projected to double through 2030 and overtake worldwide renewable power investment, according to the IEA. This should also benefit GE Vernova over the long run, with more than 95% of power transmission utilities in the world equipped with components from its Electrification segment. In line with this, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for GEV's long-term (three-to-five years) earnings growth rate is pegged at a solid 18%. In fact, the growing investment in renewable-sourced electricity worldwide has also been bolstering the long-term growth prospects of other clean energy stocks, such as TLN and BE. Notably, the long-term earnings growth rate for TLN is 15.5%, while that for BE is 28%. Now, let's take a quick look at GEV's near-term estimates to see if that also depicts the same growth story. Estimates for GEV The Zacks Consensus Estimate for GEV's 2025 and 2026 sales implies an improvement of 6.7% and 11.4%, respectively, year over year. A similar improvement can be witnessed in the company's 2025 and 2026 earnings estimates. Moreover, GEV's near-term earnings estimate has moved north over the past 60 days. The upward revision in earnings estimates indicates analysts' increasing confidence in the stock's earnings-generating capabilities. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Risks of Investing in GEV Stock Despite boasting solid growth opportunities, GE Vernova does face a few challenges and a prudent investor should be aware of those. Notably, the global supply-chain crisis has been a common challenge affecting manufacturers across industries in recent times, with GE Vernova being no exception. The company relies on complex global supply networks for components used in its gas turbines, wind turbines and grid infrastructure. Specifically, it purchases approximately $20 billion in materials and components sourced from over 100 countries. Therefore, disruptions in the availability of raw materials, such as steel and rare earth elements, along with logistical delays, have affected and may adversely impact GE Vernova's production timelines and hike its input costs, thereby hurting its bottom line. Moreover, the installation and maintenance of offshore wind turbines can be particularly affected by weather-related scheduling delays due to their complex infrastructure, higher wind speeds and the challenges of accessing offshore sites. Realizing the challenging market environment of the offshore wind industry, GE Vernova has halted its engagement in new offshore wind turbine orders since last year. So, offshore wind remains a challenging business for the company. GEV Stock Trading at a Premium In terms of valuation, GEV's forward 12-month price-to-earnings (P/E) is 53.16X, a premium to its peer group's average of 15.99X. This suggests that investors will be paying a higher price than the company's expected earnings growth compared to its peers. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Its industry peers are also trading at a premium to the peer group average. While TLN is trading at a forward 12-month earnings of 24.35X, BE is trading at 68.38X. Final Thoughts To conclude, investors interested in GE Vernova may wait for a better entry point, considering its premium valuation and challenges in the offshore wind business. However, those who already own this Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) stock may continue to retain it, given its robust price performance, consistent order wins in key clean energy segments, and solid earnings growth potential supported by optimistic sales estimates. Google lands major nuclear energy deal to power it's massive AI data centers with 50 megawatt capacity

Google, Kairos Power and the Tennessee Valley Authority have agreed to supply 50 megawatts of nuclear power to data centers in Tennessee and Alabama. The companies say the deal will help meet rising U.S. energy demand and advance the nation's role in next-generation nuclear power. Under the agreement, Kairos's Hermes 2 Plant in Oak Ridge will feed up to 50 megawatts into the TVA grid that serves Google's facilities. The deal makes TVA the first utility to purchase power from a GEN IV reactor. It also marks the first deployment of Hermes 2 under Kairos' broader pact with Google to deliver 500 megawatts by 2035. Kairos plans to boost Hermes 2's output from 28 to 50 megawatts beginning in 2030. In October, Google signed a deal with Kairos to buy nuclear power from 'multiple' small modular reactors under development. The reactors 'will be sited in relevant service territories to supply clean energy to Google data centers' beginning in 203, Kairos Power said at the time. Google said this week the reactor will supply electricity to its data centers in Montgomery County, Tennessee, and Jackson County, Alabama. 'With this next step, we are creating a three-party solution where energy customers, utilities, and technology developers work together to advance new technologies that can help meet the world's growing energy needs with reliable, affordable capacity,' Google said. A new agreement will lead to Google, Kairos Power, and the Tennessee Valley supplying 50 megawatts of nuclear power to data centers in Tennessee and Alabama. Kairos 'In this initial phase of the collaboration, we will procure clean energy attributes from the plant through TVA to help power our data centers in the region with locally sourced clean energy, every hour of every day,' the company added. Big Tech's energy-hungry data centers, fueled by generative artificial intelligence, require massive amounts of electricity. Those record energy needs have pushed U.S. power consumption to new highs and fueled demand for next-generation nuclear. The Google-Kairos deal will ultimately support 500 megawatts of advanced nuclear capacity—enough to power about 350,000 homes. The contract will specifically feed Kairos's Hermes 2 Plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, through the TVA grid, which serves Google's facilities. Kairos Google isn't alone in turning to nuclear. Microsoft struck a 20-year power purchase agreement with Constellation last year that could restart Three Mile Island's Unit 1 reactor in Pennsylvania. Amazon announced three nuclear-focused deals in October with Energy Northwest, X-energy and Dominion Energy. A GridStrategies report projects U.S. electricity demand will rise 15.8% by 2029, driven by data centers, manufacturing and electrification. The International Energy Agency expects U.S. data center electricity use to jump 130% between 2024 and 2030. FOX Business' Aislinn Murphy and Reuters contributed to this report.

Google announced the next step in its nuclear energy plans

Google is one step closer to reaching its nuclear ambitions now that it's working with public power utility Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to purchase electricity from a next-generation reactor. It's the first power purchase agreement for technology this advanced that a US utility has made, according to the companies. The plan is for TVA to buy electricity from a reactor being developed by engineering company Kairos Power in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Once the reactor is up and running, expected in 2030, it should start supplying electricity to the local grid that serves Google data centers in Tennessee and Alabama. If they manage to pull this all off, it could help jumpstart a whole new era for nuclear energy If they manage to pull this all off, it could help jumpstart a whole new era for nuclear energy in the US. The nation's current fleet of nuclear reactors uses decades-old technology that has struggled to compete with cheap electricity from gas-fired power plants and solar and wind farms. Kairos Power is building one of the first reactors that proponents hope can usher in a resurgence of nuclear energy, and meet rising electricity demand from Big Tech and AI. The announcement follows news that Google would purchase electricity from 'multiple' small modular reactors designed by Kairos Power. The Hermes 2 demonstration plant is the first reactor being developed under that agreement. It expands on the first Hermes demonstration reactor that Kairos broke ground on in July of last year after receiving the first construction permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a non-water-cooled reactor in more than half a century. Unlike conventional reactors that use water, Kairos' technology uses molten fluoride salt as a coolant. Since the reactor's molten salt coolant has a much higher boiling point than water and doesn't reach a boil, the reactor can operate at relatively low pressure. A low-pressure reactor like Kairos' technology is supposed to cut costs for nuclear energy by getting rid of the need to build big high-pressure containment structures. Oak Ridge, Tennessee — where Kairos is building Hermes 2 — was once the headquarters for the Manhattan Project. Now, instead of housing facilities enriching uranium for the first atomic bombs, Oak Ridge has become a hub for nuclear energy projects and research. Eventually, Google aims to help Kairos deploy 500 megawatts of new nuclear capacity in the US by 2035. For context, America's 94 operating nuclear reactors had a combined capacity of 97,000MW in 2024 and accounted for just under 20 percent of the US electricity mix. Hermes 2 is supposed to reach a capacity of 50MW. Companies that generate carbon pollution-free electricity, like nuclear energy and renewables, can make money by selling the electricity they provide to the power grid and by selling so-called clean energy attributes that are like separate certificates representing the environmental benefits of avoiding fossil fuel emissions. Google will receive clean energy attributes from the Hermes 2 plant through TVA. Tech companies with climate goals often buy clean energy attributes to try to cancel out the pollution caused by their electricity use. By matching its electricity use with those certificates, a company might claim that it runs on clean energy even if it's plugged into a power grid that still runs on dirty energy. Extra income from clean energy attributes is supposed to help developers add more carbon pollution-free power to the grid (although research has shown that the environmental benefits are often overestimated). Google's carbon emissions rose again last year as it ramps up its AI offerings. Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.
