Iberia probes ‘Free Palestine' message on kosher meals

Arab News5 days ago
MADRID: Spanish airline Iberia said Tuesday that it had opened an investigation after a passenger who requested a kosher meal received his food tray with the words 'Free Palestine' written on the packaging.
Several other Jewish passengers on the flight from Buenos Aires to Madrid received meal trays marked with the initials 'FP' for 'Free Palestine,' according to DAIA, the umbrella organization of Argentina's Jewish community, calling it a 'serious act of antisemitism.'
'We strongly condemn this discriminatory act and have contacted the airline authorities to demand explanations and immediate action,' the group said in a message posted on X.
The post included a photo showing a meal tray with a handwritten white label marked 'Free Palestine' in black letters.
Kosher refers to food prepared according to Jewish dietary laws.
In a statement, Iberia confirmed that some passengers on the flight that landed early Tuesday reported 'handwritten pro-Palestinian messages' on their meal packaging.
'The Iberia crew documented the incident and took action to assist those affected. The captain personally approached them to apologize on behalf of the airline,' the statement said.
The airline said it was conducting an internal investigation and working with its catering providers to determine how the labels were added.
Iberia also said it 'categorically rejects any form of discrimination, incitement to hatred, or behavior that undermines the dignity of individuals.'
Last month, dozens of Jewish teenagers from France were removed from a Vueling flight departing Valencia in Spain.
The airline said they had engaged in disruptive behavior including tampering with life jackets and oxygen masks.
Some parents, however, alleged the removal was antisemitic, saying the group was expelled after one teen sang a song in Hebrew.
Vueling is part of International Airlines Group (IAG), which also owns Iberia, British Airways and the Irish airline Aer Lingus.P

Fire contained at historic Spain mosque-cathedral

MADRID: A fire broke out in the historic mosque-turned-cathedral in the Spanish city of Cordoba on Friday but it was quickly contained, firefighters said. Widely shared videos had shown flames and smoke coming from inside the major tourist attraction, which is visited by two million people per year. 'The fire is under control at this stage, but it is not extinguished,' the fire brigade said. There were no immediate reports on how much damage had been caused at the UNESCO-listed heritage site. The spectacular blaze had broken out around 9:00 PM (1900 GMT) raising fears for the early medieval architectural gem. ABC and other newspapers reported that a mechanical sweeping machine had caught fire in the site. Considered a jewel of Islamic architecture, the site was built as a mosque — on the site of an earlier church — between the 8th and 10th centuries by the southern city's then Muslim ruler, Abd ar-Rahman, an emir of the Umayyad dynasty. After Christians reconquered Spain in the 13th century under King Ferdinand III of Castile, it was converted into a cathedral and architectural alterations were made over following centuries. Cordoba town hall could not be reached for comment by AFP on Friday evening.

Wildfire near Spanish tourist town under control

Firefighters have brought under control a wind-driven wildfire near the southern Spanish tourist town of Tarifa that forced the evacuation of more than 1,500 people, officials said on Friday. The blaze broke out on Tuesday in La Peaa, a wooded area near a beach outside Tarifa, a coastal town of about 19,000 residents known for its strong winds that attract windsurfers. Authorities said the fire started in a camper van at a campsite and quickly spread in the gusty conditions. About 1,550 people and 5,000 vehicles were evacuated from campsites, hotels and homes. Residents and tourists were allowed to return on Wednesday after the fire was declared 'stabilized.' While the flames have been contained, firefighting crews will remain in the area in the coming days to secure the perimeter and prevent flare-ups, Andalusia's regional firefighting agency, Infoca, said on X. Spain is currently experiencing a heat wave, with temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in many regions. The extreme heat is expected to last until at least Wednesday. Civil protection authorities have warned of a high to extreme wildfire risk across much of the country.
