Bay Area 8-year-old Lego builder advances to international competition
Legoland Discovery Center Bay Area in Milpitas just crowned the winner of the Bay Area's 2025 Mini Master Model Builder, and one talented eight-year-old inventor is moving forward to compete on a global scale.
"You really can release your imagination through Legos, you can like build anything you want," Samuel Nudelman, the winner of the Bay Area competition, told CBS News Bay Area.
He began building Lego sets when he was just about two years old. And now, he is the proud winner of this year's competition. Nudelman built a truck, with some innovative moving features.
"It had like, some storage space. It was pretty good, though I only spent like two days building it," Nudelman said.
He competed against about 60 other young Bay Area inventors.
"He would talk about the names of the pieces, he was talking about the different sizes. And then we were talking history! I wasn't expecting history… he was talking about what the first Lego sets were," Lester Mendaros, Lego Master Model Builder at Legoland Discovery Center Bay Area, told CBS News Bay Area.
Mendaros was one of the judges, and said he was impressed with Nudelman's expertise with Lego sets.
Mendaros is now mentoring the eight-year-old inventor as he is now tasked with building a Lego that represents where he is from.
"I'm building something even bigger than the truck," Nudelman said.
For Mendaros, he said competitions like these help spark that creativity in the next generation of innovators.
"It's really intuitive when you're putting things together, you don't have to really think too hard to put things together. There is a little bit of engineering, but your ideas can come in really quickly. There are so many colors, there are so many pieces," Mendaros said.
Nudelman needs to submit his Lego creation for the global contest in June, and there will be at least 30 other submissions from Legoland Discovery Centers from around the world.
He also shared that when he grows up, he wants to be a master model builder.

Sports Pulse Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix proved a more interesting race than the most recent event at Formula 1's most iconic circuit. Reigning world champion Max Verstappen waited until the final lap to pit his Red Bull to meet the mandatory two-stop requirement and cede the lead to pole sitter Lando Norris. The McLaren driver earned the team's first win in Monaco since 2008 and his first at the track in F1, as well. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, McLaren's Oscar Piastri, Verstappen and Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top five runners. After the race, Hamilton had an awkward radio exchange with his engineer Riccardo Adami. "Are you upset with me or something?" Hamilton said on the cool down lap. Adami appeared not to respond. In the closing laps of the race, Hamilton had asked Adami a question about the gap to the top four drivers. "Are they still ahead by a minute?" Hamilton asked. "Charles on [medium tires] and the McLarens on [hard tires]," Adami responded. "Lapping [1:16]. Very close to each other, fighting." "You're not answering the question but it doesn't really matter," Hamilton said. "I'm just asking, am I a minute behind or?" "48 seconds," Adami said. The seven-time champion did manage to make up some positions in the race after a penalty for impeding during qualifying dropped him down to seventh on the starting grid. His fifth-place finish follows a fourth-place result in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix a week prior.

Few motorsports events in the world have the same draw as the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix. The crown jewel of the F1 calendar sees some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment in attendance to see some of the best drivers in the world battle in close quarters. Despite the star-studded group of attendees, the Monaco Grand Prix often is far from an exciting race. The nature of modern F1 cars means passing is nearly impossible in the tight, twisting corners with barriers just inches away from cars at almost every point of the Circuit de Monaco. First season in red: Lewis Hamilton's F1 transition to Ferrari is a work in progress Qualifying is more important at Monaco than any other track on the F1 calendar. How the cars line up on Sunday is often how they'll end up come the checkered flag. Things could be different this year, though, as F1 officials have mandated all drivers must use at least three different sets of tires, which requires at least two pit stops during the race. That's a change from the two-set minimum for dry conditions for all other races. Tire wear in Monaco is low because it's the slowest track on the calendar. That means we could see teams get creative in choosing how best to deploy the two-stop minimum. Monaco's close barriers often mean a crash is near-inevitable which could a wrench into teams' plans. It could be a more exciting race than we've seen in Monte Carlo in recent years.
