FIFA relegates Kenyan club Muhoroni Youth to third tier for match-fixing
Nairobi, May 3 (UNI) FIFA on Friday relegated Kenya's former top-flight team Muhoroni Youth FC to the third tier of the domestic league after being found guilty of match-fixing.
FIFA's Disciplinary Committee convicted Muhoroni Youth of "activities related to the manipulation of football matches and competitions," and expelled the club from the second-tier National Super League (NSL).
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) confirmed FIFA's decision in a statement issued in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, that the club will now be relegated to Division One. Meanwhile, FIFA also relegated Vietnamese lower-tier team Phu Tho, which was found guilty of match manipulation, to the third division. Both clubs have the right to appeal.
"FKF fully supports FIFA's decision and reiterates its zero-tolerance stance on match fixing and all forms of manipulation that threaten the integrity of the game," said FKF CEO Harold Ndege.
"The federation will continue to cooperate with all stakeholders to ensure that individuals and teams found guilty of engaging in match-fixing face the full consequences of their actions, in accordance with FIFA and FKF regulations," Ndege added.
He further warned that the domestic game was the target of a "full-scale war" against match-fixing.
"We cannot allow this vice to undermine the progress we are making to uplift the game. Anyone found culpable will face the full consequences of their actions," Ngege emphasized.
Before the announcement, Muhoroni was 18th on the league table with 23 points from 27 matches. Founded in 2003, the club was promoted to Kenya's top tier, the Premier League, in 2011, and in 2016, and won its first domestic trophy by lifting the KPL Top 8 knockout tournament.
The team was relegated to the NSL again last year on the final day of the season. During its time in the top flight, the club based in Western Kenya developed a reputation for intimidating visiting teams, officials, and media personnel at its home ground.

Several of those detained were convicted criminals with charges ranging from sexual assault to gang activity and murder. Another major arrest was Rolando Veneracion-Enriquez, 55, a Philippine national, who was sentenced to 37 years in prison for assault with intent to commit rape and sexual penetration with a foreign object in Pomona, California. As news of the arrests broke, protestors gathered across the city to oppose the detentions, even surrounding a downtown ICE detention centre where they believed the detainees were being held. Chaos escalated until President Donald Trump ordered the National Guard to intervene. An ICE source told The NY Post, "That's who they're protesting for, the actual criminals that are being arrested, the sex offenders, the terrorists, all that. You have criminals, gang members, terrorists, child molesters, and sex offenders that are being arrested, but since people don't know the background of the case or what's going on, everybody's innocent." "The public sees it as everybody's innocent, which is not true," the source added. Other individuals arrested include Armando Ordaz, 44, a Mexican national and alleged Bratz 13 gang member convicted of sexual battery; Delfino Aguilar-Martinez, 51, convicted of assault with a deadly weapon; Lionel Sanchez-Laguna, 55, with convictions for firing at an inhabited dwelling, domestic battery, child cruelty, assault with a firearm, and a DUI; and Victor Mendoza-Aguilar, 32, convicted of drug possession and assault with a deadly weapon. ICE reported that others detained had criminal convictions for drug dealing, robbery, grand larceny, and transporting "illegal aliens."

Indian football continues to slide as team suffers defeat to lower-ranked Hong Kong
There was no stopping Indian football's decline as the senior men's team, lacking in spunk, finishing skill and the will to fight, suffered a calamitous 0-1 defeat to lower-ranked Hong Kong in a crucial 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualifier match here on Tuesday. Hosts Hong Kong emerged victorious after an injury-time goal by Stefan Pereira. The referee awarded Hong Kong the penalty after India custodian Vishal Kaith came out of the goalline and tried to punch the ball to safety, only to end up hitting Michael Udebuluzor and injuring the player. Pereira (90+4) stepped up to take the spot kick and shot the ball to the right of Kaith, who was also shown a yellow card for his injury-time foul. The latest reverse jeopardised India's prospects of reaching the next Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, and the team is also set to drop to 133 on the FIFA rankings with Hong Kong gaining points and climbing up in the pecking order. It is a continuation of a series of disappointing results that the team has endured in recent years during which activities off the field grabbed more headlines than on-field performances, including the unceremonious exit of previous head coach Igor Stimac after an ugly dispute with his employers All India Football Federation (AIFF). Meanwhile, after having received medical attention after getting injured, Colaco unleashed a powerful long-range shot but it went straight into the keeper's gloves. Hong Kong also grew in confidence as the game approached the half time. The home team could have taken the lead from a free-kick had it not been for a timely clearance by Asish Rai from goal-mouth after custodian Vishal Kaith was beaten. Both India and Hong Kong have had their moments but neither side could convert in a tightly contested first half of this crucial 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualifier. Kuruniyan, who has otherwise performed his job admirably on the flanks, looked to have got another chance to break the deadlock some minutes into the second half, but could not. Soon after, coach Marquez brought on India's all-time highest goal-scorer Chhetri alongside Naorem Singh in place of Kuruniyan and Brandon Fernandes. India created chances in the second half too, including in the 81st minute when Lallianzuala Chhangte found Chhetri with a brilliant cutback inside the Hong Kong box, but the veteran striker was not able to connect it well. The result is a setback for India who came into the game after a goal-less draw against Bangladesh in their first Asian Cup qualifying match, at home in March. India have one point from two games and are last in the group, and only one team from the pool of four will qualify for the final. India will now need to win their remaining four matches, but given their inability to score, it looks improbable.

LaLiga president decries Club World Cup as ‘completely absurd'
LaLiga president Javier Tebas will not be cheering FIFA's Club World Cup when play begins this week. Tebas largely has concerns over his own product because two of the 32 teams in the draw — Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid — play in Spain's top flight and might face delays to the start of their season should they advance to the Round of 16 in July. LaLiga is scheduled to begin on Aug. 16. 'There is already controversy over when Real Madrid and Atletico will start LaLiga, which disrupts our usual football schedule and hurts us in the medium term,' Tebas said in a radio interview with Cadena Cope radio. 'The decision on whether Real Madrid and Atletico will start (LaLiga) later (in order to rest) is not mine alone. It will be made in due course when we see where they stand. But it can't be that we keep having to constantly change our schedule for other competitions that we are not in favor of.' FIFA is the governing body overseeing the CWC and next year's World Cup. Tebas said he had no contact with any officials at FIFA, and they didn't consult LaLiga about any of the details of the tournament being held in the United States. 'It is completely absurd,' Tebas said. 'They haven't consulted us about dates, they haven't consulted us about anything. What they're doing is damaging Spanish competition, if big teams like Real Madrid or Atletico can't play on the first day of LaLiga.'
