Second time lucky for Benni McCarthy and Orlando Pirates? Kenya says no . . . for now

FILE - Kenya national team coach Benni McCarthy has been linked with Orlando Pirates. Image: Backpagepix While reports swirl about Benni McCarthy returning to South Africa to take up the vacant Orlando Pirates job, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is adamant that their national team coach is staying put. The former Bafana Bafana striker has been linked to the job after Jose Riveiro announced he would be leaving at the end of the season. Riveiro will be on the touchline for the final time on Tuesday evening when Pirates take on Golden Arrows in a Betway Premiership match. Riveiro is reportedly set to become the new coach of Egyptian giants Al Ahly, with a big-money offer apparently on the table to replace Swiss coach Marcel Koller, who was sacked by the club. McCarthy had been previously linked with the Pirates job, revealing in December that he actually had talks to join the Buccaneers even before Riveiro was appointed as head coach in 2022. Next Stay Close ✕ Kenya 🇰🇪 might not qualify for the 2026 World Cup but one important fact is that they now have a coach who can rebuild the team and make it great again. Benni Mccarthy has got approval from Kenyan fans and that is an important aspect for any coach. It's important to give him… — Collins Okinyo (@bedjosessien) March 24, 2025 'There was [a chance] once upon a time, way before Jose Riveiro came to Pirates,' McCarthy said in a radio interview. 'I did speak with the chairman [Dr Irvin Khoza]. It was almost a done deal; it was kind of me going back to coach the Orlando Pirates. But I think the chairman at the last minute decided to go for someone with more experience because, like I said, I didn't have a lot of coaching experience back then 'If I was given that opportunity with that Pirates team, I think there would have been fireworks. But that was the closest I came to coaching Pirates and after that, it was just always rumours. 'People were connecting me to coaching Pirates and Chiefs. When there is a vacancy my name gets thrown in, but I think it was also to attract other coaches when it looked like Benni McCarthy is close to signing for one of those two teams.' Former Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy thinks the Red Devils can qualify for Champions League this season: #Barclaysmen — CNN Sports (@cnnsport) September 13, 2024 After serving as Manchester United's assistant coach under Erik ten Hag, McCarthy was appointed as head coach of Kenya. He took charge of the team in March, drawing a World Cup qualifier against Gambia before going down 2-1 to Gabon. Now McCarthy is once again being linked to the Pirates job. But the Kenyan football authorities are not having it, saying that McCarthy has not approached them to get out of his contract. "Benni is still contracted to the Football Kenya Federation as the Harambee Stars coach," FKF head of communications Jeff Kinyanjui told KickOff. "We haven't received anything, Benni is contracted to the FKF." @JohnGoliath82

FIFA orders Kenyan club relegation for match fixing

NAIROBI: The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) confirmed on Friday the relegation of a Kenyan club, Muhoroni Youth, after world governing body FIFA found the second-tier team guilty of match manipulation. It is the latest scandal to hit the sport in the east African country, long plagued by match-fixing. In a decision published on Friday, FIFA found Muhoroni Youth "guilty of activities related to the manipulation of football matches and competitions." It expelled the club's senior team from the FKF's second-tier National Super League and ordered their relegation to the third-tier Division One League ahead of next season. The FKF said it "fully supports FIFA's decision" and reiterated "its zero-tolerance stance on match-fixing and all forms of manipulation that threaten the integrity of the game." The move follows the suspension of former national team goalkeeper Patrick Matasi at the end of March over allegations he helped rig a 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Cameroon in Yaounde last year. Kenya lost 4-1 to diminish their chances of qualifying for the finals in Morocco in December. In February 2020 FIFA banned four Kenya-based players – one for life – over an "international conspiracy" to fix league matches. Five Kenyan referees were later suspended over the same scandal. The Kenya Institute of Public Policy Research and Analysis, an independent think tank, warned that match-fixing had infiltrated Kenyan football from grassroots competitions to the professional leagues.

FIFA relegates Kenyan club Muhoroni Youth to third tier for match-fixing

Nairobi, May 3 (UNI) FIFA on Friday relegated Kenya's former top-flight team Muhoroni Youth FC to the third tier of the domestic league after being found guilty of match-fixing. FIFA's Disciplinary Committee convicted Muhoroni Youth of "activities related to the manipulation of football matches and competitions," and expelled the club from the second-tier National Super League (NSL). Football Kenya Federation (FKF) confirmed FIFA's decision in a statement issued in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, that the club will now be relegated to Division One. Meanwhile, FIFA also relegated Vietnamese lower-tier team Phu Tho, which was found guilty of match manipulation, to the third division. Both clubs have the right to appeal. "FKF fully supports FIFA's decision and reiterates its zero-tolerance stance on match fixing and all forms of manipulation that threaten the integrity of the game," said FKF CEO Harold Ndege. "The federation will continue to cooperate with all stakeholders to ensure that individuals and teams found guilty of engaging in match-fixing face the full consequences of their actions, in accordance with FIFA and FKF regulations," Ndege added. He further warned that the domestic game was the target of a "full-scale war" against match-fixing. "We cannot allow this vice to undermine the progress we are making to uplift the game. Anyone found culpable will face the full consequences of their actions," Ngege emphasized. Before the announcement, Muhoroni was 18th on the league table with 23 points from 27 matches. Founded in 2003, the club was promoted to Kenya's top tier, the Premier League, in 2011, and in 2016, and won its first domestic trophy by lifting the KPL Top 8 knockout tournament. The team was relegated to the NSL again last year on the final day of the season. During its time in the top flight, the club based in Western Kenya developed a reputation for intimidating visiting teams, officials, and media personnel at its home ground. UNI XINHUA GNK

Kenya goalkeeper under ‘official investigation' for alleged match-fixing

The Kenyan Football Federation (FKF) has opened an 'official investigation' into alleged match manipulation by goalkeeper Patrick Matasi. The 37-year-old, who plays for Kakamega Homeboyz in the Kenyan Premier League, has been capped 30 times by Kenya, including in qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Advertisement A video that surfaced on social media — which The Athletic has been unable to verify — appears to show Matasi in a compromising discussion with another individual regarding the outcome of a match. The KFK said it would work with 'FIFA, CAF, and other relevant authorities' to investigate the allegations, while calling for any evidence to be brought forward. 'The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is aware of videos circulating online involving goalkeeper Patrick Matasi, raising concerns about possible match manipulation,' a statement read. 'FKF upholds the integrity of football and has launched an official investigation in collaboration with FIFA, CAF, and other relevant authorities. We reaffirm our zero-tolerance policy on match manipulation and are committed to safeguarding the credibility of our competitions. 'This investigation will adhere to FKF's Anti-Match Manipulation Regulations and FIFA guidelines, ensuring a fair, transparent, and thorough process. The rights of the player and his club will be respected, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings. 'We encourage anyone with credible information to assist in this investigation. All reports will be handled with strict confidentiality.' The Athletic has contacted Kakamega Homeboyz for comment. Speaking to BBC Sport Africa, the club's chairman Cleophas Shimanyula said Matasi had informed him that he 'doesn't know anything about match-fixing'. He explained the club have their own systems to deal with such cases and insisted they are against 'any form' of match manipulation. He also added that Matasi would keep playing for the club. 'I have spoken to him,' Shimanyula said. 'He was also shocked at what he was seeing in the video and he told me he doesn't know about match-fixing.' He continued: 'In the past we've reported match-fixing regarding some of our players (Festo Omukoto, Festus Okiring, Moses Chikati and George Mandela) who fixed a game with the coach and punishments were handed down by Fifa (in 2020). 'We have our own internal systems that we use to also look at match-fixing. 'As Kakamega Homeboyz we are asking anyone who has evidence of Matasi fixing a game to bring it forward.'
