FIFA orders Kenyan club relegation for match fixing
It is the latest scandal to hit the sport in the east African country, long plagued by match-fixing.
In a decision published on Friday, FIFA found Muhoroni Youth "guilty of activities related to the manipulation of football matches and competitions."
It expelled the club's senior team from the FKF's second-tier National Super League and ordered their relegation to the third-tier Division One League ahead of next season.
The FKF said it "fully supports FIFA's decision" and reiterated "its zero-tolerance stance on match-fixing and all forms of manipulation that threaten the integrity of the game."
The move follows the suspension of former national team goalkeeper Patrick Matasi at the end of March over allegations he helped rig a 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Cameroon in Yaounde last year.
Kenya lost 4-1 to diminish their chances of qualifying for the finals in Morocco in December.
In February 2020 FIFA banned four Kenya-based players – one for life – over an "international conspiracy" to fix league matches.
Five Kenyan referees were later suspended over the same scandal.
The Kenya Institute of Public Policy Research and Analysis, an independent think tank, warned that match-fixing had infiltrated Kenyan football from grassroots competitions to the professional leagues.

Goalkeeper Fabio claims world record for most games
Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio on Tuesday claimed the record for most competitive appearances in men's football when the Brazilian played for a 1,391st time. The 44-year-old on Saturday equalled the landmark held by former England stopper Peter Shilton and Fabio has now gone one better following a 2-0 win over Colombia's America de Cali at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro. Fluminense and Brazilian media say Fabio now stands alone in football history, although neither FIFA nor regional body CONMEBOL has declared it a record. 'Sometimes we don't realize the importance of such a significant achievement as breaking this record, which has stood for many years,' Fabio, who has spent his entire career in Brazil, said following his clean sheet in the Copa Sudamericana last 16 second leg. The home fans chanted, 'Fabio is the best goalkeeper in Brazil,' and he received a commemorative plaque to mark the achievement. 'No one plays so many matches without a level of professionalism like his,' said Fluminense coach Renato Gaucho. 'He'll undoubtedly continue to play for a long time. 'It will be difficult for another player to surpass his record.' Fabio won the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense in 2023 and was part of the side that reached the semi-finals of the Club World Cup in the United States this summer. He made 976 appearances for Cruzeiro between 2005 and 2022, after playing 30 times for Uniao Bandeirante and another 150 games for Vasco da Gama. His record outing against America de Cali was his 235th match for Fluminense. Fabio began his career in 1997, the year that Shilton retired. The Englishman considers his total number of appearances to be 1,387, but Guinness World Records puts the number at 1,390. - AFP

Facundo clarifies his Harimau Malaya status
KUALA LUMPUR: National team defender Facundo Garces has clarified his status as a heritage player for Malaysia. The Argentine-born Garces was reported as saying that one of his "great grandparents" was from Malaysia. Garces, however, later clarified that his statement in a recent interview with Spanish portal, El Correo was misreported as he had said "grandparents", not "great grandparents". Fifa only recognises heritage players with links to their grandparents. The Alaves FC player declared his pride in being a Malaysian citizen, as he has Malaysian blood because of his grandparent. "It was just a transcription error (El Correo interview). I am Malaysian from my grandparents roots and I'm honoured to play for my country," he said in an Instagram post. In June, Argentine media outlet reported that Garces, who previously played for Club Atletico Colon in Argentina before joining Alaves in Spain, has a Malaysian grandmother. "For Facundo Garces, who once played with Colon, it is understood his connection to Malaysia is through his grandmother," reported Garces starred in Malaysia's 4-0 win over Vietnam in an Asian Cup qualifier at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 10.
