Households urged to sprinkle cinnamon in hoover to make entire home smell fresh
The UK is set to welcome another summer heatwave next week and many will be making the most of the hot weather through barbecues, parties and social gatherings. When welcoming guests into our homes, many of us enjoy making the place look spick and span before they arrive.
This process includes eliminating any lingering smells from inside the property to make the house smell fresh and clean. A cleaning expert has now issued an unusual and affordable tip on how you can banish any unpleasant smells from your home by simply adding some cinnamon to your hoover.
After many years of heavy use, lots of vacuums will start to smell a little off. After collecting dust, dirt, mud, pet hairs and general grime, sometimes just running the hoover for half an hour can leave your home smelling bad, the Express reports.
However, this is an easy fix according to the experts at Lottomart.
According to the cleaning gurus, sprinkling cinnamon directly inside your hoover has two major cleaning benefits.
Firstly, it spreads a sweet, fresh smell throughout the house every time you hoover.
Secondly, it also has antibacterial properties, meaning nasty germs dwelling in your carpet will be killed off, too.
They said: 'Over time, dust, pet hair, and trapped dirt can create a breeding ground for bacteria and unpleasant odours inside your vacuum.
'But before you splash out on pricey fresheners or replace parts, there's a simple, natural, and shockingly cheap solution hiding right in your spice cupboard: cinnamon!
'Cinnamon isn't just for cooking - it's a powerful, natural deodoriser with antibacterial properties."
If you don't already have some ground cinnamon at home, you can pick up a 36g tub from Tesco or Asda which costs just £1.
In order to achieve an incredibly smelling hoover using cinnamon, you'll need to start by taking a small napkin or cotton pad and dampening it with warm water.
Next, sprinkle around 10g, roughly two teaspoons, of ground cinnamon onto the damp napkin or cotton pad, gently rubbing it in to ensure it's evenly distributed.
Once the napkin is ready, simply place it inside the vacuum cleaner's bag or dustbin. If your vacuum is bagless, put it inside the waste/dustbin area where it won't obstruct the suction.
Now you can just vacuum as normal, and while you do so, the cinnamon-infused napkin will circulate through the machine, releasing a warm, bakery-like scent and neutralising any unpleasant odours.

A spokesperson for Lottomart stated: "Unlike chemical air fresheners or commercial cleaners, cinnamon neutralises bad smells at the source while leaving behind a warm, subtle fragrance. It's a far more pleasant, long-lasting scent compared to synthetic alternatives."
According to science journals, there is something in cinnamon's antibacterial or antimicrobial properties.
IOP Science reports: "Cinnamon bark has been commonly used as spicy and traditional medicine. It contains several antibacterial compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, and cinnamaldehyde.
"Several studies have been done to know the antibacterial effect on bacteria such as Streptococcus in vitro."

Hydrangeas will grow better flowers if you do one simple task in August
Hydrangeas will grow better flowers if you do one simple task in August Hydrangeas are hardy plants that do not need much care, but there is one simple gardening task that can ensure they continue to bloom beautifully for much longer Hydrangeas will grow even perkier flowers if one simple task is done in August (Image: Getty) Hydrangeas, robust as they are, typically require minimal maintenance, yet there's one thing they need for their delicate root systems - ample moisture. As rain is something Wales is currently lacking, one straightforward gardening chore can really help. Despite regular watering, hydrangeas can suffer in extreme heat, leading to wilting, underdeveloped blooms, or even halted growth. However, Skye Hamilton, affectionately dubbed the Hydrangea Queen and founder of Hamilton House Designs, has divulged a tip for safeguarding your hydrangeas. She explained: "Mulching hydrangeas is super beneficial for retaining moisture, retaining nutrients, and feeding the soil. Hydrangeas have wide, shallow roots, so finding the right mulch is very important." The practice of mulching involves covering the soil around plants with a protective layer to shield them from the elements, particularly useful in summer to conserve soil moisture. Love dreamy Welsh homes? Sign up to our newsletter here A good mulch layer acts as a barrier against evaporation and also insulates the plant's roots, keeping them cool regardless of the soaring temperatures, reports the Express. This technique not only keeps hydrangeas looking vibrant and encourages flowering during intense heat but also prevents weeds from encroaching, reducing the need for additional gardening tasks. How to mulch hydrangeas in August Mulching is simple but helps the soil retain moisture to keep hydrangeas hydrated (Image: Getty) It's advisable to utilise a natural mulch known for its water-retention properties, such as pine, cedar, bark chips, pine straw or leaf mulch. These types of mulch not only keep hydrangeas hydrated but also decompose slowly, providing the plant with additional nutrients. Distribute a thin layer (approximately two to four inches thick) around a hydrangea plant, taking care not to overdo it or create piles. Hydrangeas require ample moisture in August, but an excess can lead to stagnant water in the soil, which may attract pests and diseases. After applying the mulch, give the hydrangea a thorough watering. Pregnant donkey abandoned by owner gives birth to baby foal at rescue centre
Mia is now a proud mum to baby Peanut, who was born one month after she was rescued in Aberdeenshire. A donkey that was abandoned while heavily pregnant has been rehomed, after receiving care from a Scots animal welfare centre. Mia was taken in by World Horse Welfare Belwade Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, after she was abandoned last summer. She gave birth to a foal, Peanut, just a month later and began rehabilitation, which was ultimately a success. This July, Mia found a new home with another donkey who had lost a companion around the same time as Mia had lost her own friend, Molly. Groom Jodie worked with Mia and helped her build her confidence. She explained: 'When Mia first arrived, she was very cautious of people – it took a long time to gain her trust.' 'To catch Mia and her friend Molly, who was abandoned with her, for the vet, the first time we had to use special treats and all our powers of persuasion! 'Mia was also very protective of her tummy and hind end, and before she had her foal, Peanut, she would kick out at anyone who went near either area.' She that Mia now gets on much better with humans: 'With a lot of time, patience, and careful training, Mia's relationship with people has completely transformed' 'Seeing her go from being so apprehensive to enjoying a cuddle and being ready to rehome has been amazing. It's been a very rewarding journey with Mia, and I'm so happy that she's found a loving home.' Alicia, who already has one horse cared for by World Horse Welfare as a companion, rehomed Mia. She said: 'Mia is adorable – she and Duffy, my donkey, spent five minutes zooming around together when they were first introduced, then they had a bit of a chat together, and that was it: best friends immediately. 'As it happens, they'd both sadly lost their friend at a similar time – I hadn't the heart to rush straight into finding a new donkey, and I knew Duffy needed time to mourn. 'Having already rehomed from World Horse Welfare once, I was pleased to do my bit by rehoming again to make space for another animal in need to be rescued. 'The team at Belwade Farm has done a great job with her, and she's lovely to handle. She's a very sweet, gentle little donkey and she loves a fuss. I'm so pleased she and Duffy have bonded so well.'

Simple 2-ingredient air fryer recipe makes perfect bread in just 5 minutes
Baking bread doesn't have to be complicated, with this recipe using just two ingredients and takes minutes to cook Making bread can seem intimidating - a precise art requiring exact measurements and endless patience. But one recipe creator has shared that you only need a couple of minutes and two simple ingredients to get the job done, reports the Express. So if you're a complete beginner who's nervous about having a go, journalist and content creator Laura's (@cakeontherun) method doesn't need any kneading or proving time. You can whip up a small loaf using two ingredients you've likely got sitting in your cupboard already. In an Instagram post from May 2024, she showed how this straightforward recipe can also be prepared in a popular kitchen gadget. If you're short on time, Laura demonstrated that this mini loaf can be cooked in the air fryer. You can also create a gluten-free version of the bread. Laura explained that to make a gluten free bread loaf, use gluten free bread and a third of a teaspoon of xanthan gum. One person commented: "I have to try it." Samuel wrote: "Thanks, so simple! Could you recommend cooking it in the microwave, in order to save fuel costs? Cheers." So if you're fresh to bread making and fancy testing out a quick, easy recipe, here's what you'll need to do. Mini bread loaf Ingredients 6 tbsp self raising flour 4 tbsp yoghurt Method Combine flour and yoghurt in a bowl to form a dough. Dust your hands with flour, shape into a ball, knead briefly and then roughly form a loaf or thick sausage shape with your hands. It shouldn't be overly sticky. Air fry the bread on air fry mode at 200 °C for five minutes. Laura noted that air fryers can differ, so if the loaf is still a bit doughy, bake for a few more minutes. If you don't have an air fryer, oven bake for 12 to 15 minutes. Enjoy immediately.
