Women students' admissions rise at Delhi University due to CUET: Government data
More women have been admitted to Delhi University (DU) undergraduate courses than men annually since the introduction of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) in 2022, official government figures the academic years 2022-23, 2023-24, and 2024-25, the number of female DU students stood at 34,010, 36,126, and 39,242, respectively. This compares with 30,662, 32,425, and 33,124 male students during the same shared by the Ministry of Education, via Minister of State Dr Sukanta Majumdar, highlights rising female participation in CUET UG -- climbing from 4.29 lakh in 2022-23 to 5.13 lakh in 2023-24 and 5.94 lakh in 2024-25. Experts believe CUET has created a level playing field, reducing dependency on board percentages and widening access for students from diverse boards and DU's single-window system now spans 240 institutions, up from 90 in the first year of CUET, reflecting the broad level of acceptance of the new BEYOND DELHI UNIVERSITYThe trend extends beyond to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE), undergraduate female enrolment across Delhi NCR climbed from 4.09 lakh in 2020-21 to 4.91 lakh in 2022-23. This consistent rise underlines the broader growth in women's participation in higher Annual Status of Higher Education (ASHE) 2024 report further confirms that Delhi reversed the gender gap in Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) by 2021-22, with female GER at 49.7%, surpassing the male GER of 48.3%.ENROLMENT PATTERNS AND COLLEGE PREFERENCESOverall demand at DU remains high. Over 3.05 lakh candidates registered on the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) for approximately 71,642 seats spread across 79 UG programmes in 69 colleges this women constituted 53.06% of total first-preference applicants. Popular choices included BCom (Hons) and Political Science (Hons), with colleges like SRCC, Hindu, and Hansraj topping the preference EQUITY INITIATIVES AND SCHOLARSHIPSTo support women's participation, DU already offers multiple inclusive entry quotas: single-girl child, orphans, PwBD, armed forces wards, sports, and ECA single-girl child quota has now been extended to PG programmes from the 202526 academic session onwards.
