Bill Hader describes ‘shock' of LA wildfires and the sweet way girlfriend Ali Wong helped him in the aftermath
Hader opened up about seeing his community destroyed and his experience in the aftermath for the first time on a recent episode of Conan O'Brien's podcast, 'Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend.'
With help from a news crew, as seen in a viral clip, Hader made his way to his home and was grateful to see it was still standing. However, he said, it was 'unlivable' and filled with 'toxic stuff everywhere.'
'There's just devastation all around,' he said. 'It was no good. I was just in total shock.'
The once picturesque community was reduced to ash and rubble in January when multiple wildfires erupted in Los Angles. The Eaton Fire, which burned through Altadena on LA's East Side, and The Palisades Fire are considered the most destructive fires in LA history and killed 29 people.
Hader said he has a 'great support system of friends,' including his girlfriend, comedian Ali Wong, who supported him in the aftermath. Wong, he said, helped him go clothes shopping after his kids noticed he was still wearing only sweatpants.
'It was very sweet. It meant a lot to me,' he said. 'My kids are like, 'You're living in your pajamas,' like, they're very worried. And I told her about that and she was like, 'Let me take you to get some clothes.''
The hardest part, he said, was knowing his kids lost so much and 'just seeing the devastation in that community and everything, I was speechless.'
Hader has three daughters – Hannah, Harper and Hayley – who he shares with his ex-wife, director and screenwriter Maggie Carey. Hader said they have been 'resilient' throughout the ordeal.
'Everybody's like, are you there for your kids? And it's like, 'No, I'm getting more from them,'' he said. 'I'm so inspired by them and their ability to move and adapt and be positive.'

Pete Davidson Reveals Origins of ‘SNL' Character Chad
Pete Davidson recently revealed the origins of his memorable Chad character from his time on Saturday Night Live. Characterized by his 'OK' catchphrase, Davidson's Chad first appeared in a 2016 'Pool Boy' sketch with host and SNL alum Julia Louis-Dreyfus and appeared in sketches with Jennifer Lopez, Adele, Benedict Cumberbatch, John Mulaney and RuPaul. And Chad returned, alongside fellow SNL alum Laraine Newman, in the SNL50 anniversary special, which has been nominated for 12 Emmys. More from The Hollywood Reporter Josh Brolin Offers Stephen Colbert a Post-'Late Show' Job Bill Hader Reveals Anxiety Kept Him From Participating in 'SNL50' Sketch John Oliver Talks Legal Battles, Late Night Turmoil and Clapping Back at His Owners Appearing on Late Night With Seth Meyers Wednesday night, Davidson explained how the recurring character came to be. 'I don't know if you know the origin of Chad, but it was a joke on me,' Davidson said. ''Cause that's how, if anybody ever gave me notes on set, I'd be like, 'OK, cool!'' '[Mikey Day and writer Streeter Seidell] brought it to the table, and I was like, 'I don't get this. Like, what the hell? What is this?' And I said the first 'OK,' and everyone was dying,' Davidson added. 'And I was like, 'I guess I really talk like that.'' Still, Davidson lamented that he felt like Chad was his only recurring character. 'It's my one character that I got to do,' he said. 'In eight years of SNL, I had one character, but it's not a very flattering character!' He expressed a similar sentiment about Chad being his 'one character' on The Hollywood Reporter's 2021 comedy actors roundtable. 'I have one character that I've done in my seven years on the show, which shows how fuckin' great I am,' Davidson said. 'His name is Chad and he's very dumb and every response is just, 'OK.' And I see a lot of myself in Chad.' He added, though, that Chad is 'a good guy' who 'means well.' Day and Seidell previously spoke about the idea behind Chad in a 2021 Vanity Fair interview. 'You basically can look at any movie style where there's intensity or drama and just say, 'What if Chad was there?'' Day said. Seidell added: 'What if there was a person who wasn't wrapped in the drama?' Davidson, who appeared on SNL from 2014-2022 is excitedly expecting his first child and currently starring alongside Eddie Murphy and Keke Palmer in The Pickup, which is streaming on Amazon's Prime Video. Pete Davidson's Favorite Backstage Memory from 'SNL' Involves Late '90s Comedian
Pete Davidson's Favorite Backstage Memory from 'SNL' Involves Late '90s Comedian originally appeared on Parade. Pete Davidson has had his fair share of unforgettable moments during his time on NBC's sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live, but there's a cool backstage memory that stands out above the rest. The comedian appeared as a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night and played a game called "Axe Me Anything" with talk show host Jimmy Fallon, where the two took turns throwing an axe and answering questions from random categories based on where the axe lands. In the first round, Fallon's axe landed on the SNL category, where both he and Davidson are alums of the show. Fallon was a cast member from 1998 to 2004, while Davidson appeared from 2014 to 2022. The 50-year-old cast member asked Davidson what his favorite SNL backstage moment was. At first, Davidson's mind went blank, which caused him and the audience to laugh. Then, the comedian talked about a cool fact he learned about the late Chris Farley. "You know, when you go under the paint cans, there's that little sign that says 'Watch your head, Farley?'" Davidson described. "They explained that to me in my first season. I thought that was really cool." Then, the 31-year-old turned to the audience to explain the background of the sign. "Chris Farley used to bump his head when he would run to sketch, so there's a little plaque that says 'Watch your head, Farley.'" Davidson said. Farley was a well-known SNL cast member from 1990 to 1995, but passed away shortly thereafter due to a drug overdose in December 1997. Davidson is expecting his first child with girlfriend Elsie Hewitt and discussed his excitement about fatherhood during his interview on The Tonight Show. The comedian has also recently starred in the animated film Dog Man, which topped the box office, and has several upcoming projects, including The Pickup and How to Rob a Bank. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon airs every weekday at 11:35 pm ET on NBC.
