Marcos to DOE: Closely monitor Middle East tension as fuel prices expected to hike
''I-monitor pong mabuti kung anong sitwasyon para po makapagbigay ng agaran ding solusyon at kahit papaano po ayuda kung talaga pong sobrang tataas ang presyo ng krudo,'' Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro said in a Tuesday briefing when asked about the President's directive to the DOE.
(Closely monitor the situation so that they can provide immediate solution and to provide aid if the prices of oil will really increase.)
Castro also mentioned that DOE officer-in-charge Sharon Garin had told her that the agency is monitoring the situation there.
The Department of Energy-Oil Industry Management Bureau (DOE-OIMB) earlier projected pump price hikes this week, citing gains on positive US-China trade signals, the stall in nuclear negotiations between US and Iran, and the expected oil demand growth in the next two and a half decades.
Motorists will have to pay more for petroleum products this week, as retailers on Monday announced major upward adjustments to mark the fifth straight week of increases for gasoline, third for diesel, and second for kerosene. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

Putin is prepared to meet Zelenskiy if key issues are worked through first, Lavrov says
Asked by reporters if Putin was willing to meet Zelenskiy, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters: "Our president has repeatedly said that he is ready to meet, including with Mr. Zelenskiy." Maxim Shipenkov/ Pool/ AFP/ File photo MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin is prepared to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy but all issues need to be worked through first and there's a question about Zelenskiy's authority to sign a deal, Putin's foreign minister said on Thursday. Putin and US President Donald Trump met on Friday in Alaska for the first Russia-US summit in more than four years and the two leaders discussed how to end the deadliest war in Europe since World War Two. Following his summit talks in Alaska, Trump said on Monday he had begun arranging a meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian leaders, to be followed by a trilateral summit with Trump. Asked by reporters if Putin was willing to meet Zelenskiy, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters: "Our president has repeatedly said that he is ready to meet, including with Mr. Zelenskiy." Lavrov, though, added a caveat: "With the understanding that all issues that require consideration at the highest level will be well worked out, and experts and ministers will prepare appropriate recommendations. "And, of course, with the understanding that when and if—hopefully, when—it comes to signing future agreements, the issue of the legitimacy of the person who signs these agreements from the Ukrainian side will be resolved," Lavrov said. Putin has repeatedly raised doubts about Zelenskiy's legitimacy as his term in office was due to expire in May 2024 but the war means no new presidential election has yet been held. Kyiv says Zelenskiy remains the legitimate president. Russian officials say they are worried that if Zelenskiy signs the deal then a future leader of Ukraine could contest it on the basis that Zelenskiy's term had technically expired. Lavrov said that the best option for a security guarantee for Ukraine would be based on discussions that took place between Moscow and Kyiv in 2022. Under a draft of that document which Reuters has seen, Ukraine was asked to agree to permanent neutrality in return for international security guarantees from the five permanent members of the UN Security Council: Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States. Any attempts to depart from the failed Istanbul discussions would be hopeless, Lavrov said, accusing European leaders of trying to undermine progress made at the Alaska summit. — Reuters

Baliwag city hall: 'Ghost' flood control project did not coordinate with us
The local government of Baliwag, Bulacan on Thursday said the supposed ''ghost'' flood control project in Barangay Piel was not coordinated with city hall. ''Ang proyektong ito ay hindi dumaan sa Pamahalaang Lungsod, at wala ring kaukulang dokumentong isinumite sa City Engineering Office, maging ang koordinasyon o pakikipag-ugnayan sa alinmang tanggapan ng LGU,'' Baliwag City PIO said in a Facebook post, referring to the reinforced concrete riverwall project in Purok 4. (This project did not pass through with the city government, and no corresponding documents were submitted to the City Engineering Office, nor coordination or communication with any office in the LGU.) ''Gaya ng Pangulo, mariin din naming tinututulan at kinokondena ang anumang 'panlolokong proyekto', lalo na't malaking pondo ng bayan ang nasayang at inabuso rito,'' it added. (Similar to the President, we stress that we are against and condemn all 'ghost projects', especially when substantial government funds were wasted or abused in connection with this.) President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. personally inspected the supposed flood control project, and he was very angry when he learned that it was never completed despite records stating otherwise. Marcos said the SYMS Construction Trading, the firm involved in this project, would be blacklisted from the government's roster of contractors. The local government, meanwhile, ensured that it would strengthen its coordination with concerned national agencies as regards any projects being implemented in the locality. ''Sinisiguro ng Pamahalaang Lungsod na mas paiigtingin pa natin ang pakikipag ugnayan sa mga ahensya ng pambansang pamahalaan sa anumang proyekto na isasagawa sa ating lungsod, upang agad na matukoy at maaksyunan ang mga kahina-hinalang proyekto, bago pa man masayang ang pondo ng bayan,'' it said. (The city government assures that we will strengthen the coordination with national agencies in whatever project that would be undertaken in our city, in order to identify and take action anomalous projects, even before taxpayer's money is wasted.) The Baliwag City PIO also guaranteed that it would fully support the President with his aim of holding accountable those involved in anomalous flood control projects. ''Buong suporta ang Pamahalaang Lungsod sa hangarin ni Pangulong BBM na palabasin ang katotohanan sa mga ma-anomalyang proyekto ng gobyerno hanggang mapanagot ang mga opisyal na may sala,'' it said. (The city government fully supports the efforts of President Marcos to uncover the truth of these anomalous government projects in order to bring the erring officials to justice.) — Anna Felicia Bajo/RF, GMA Integrated News

Sunwest says it's conducting repairs on flood control projects in Oriental Mindoro
Sunwest Construction and Development Corporation said Wednesday that it has started its rehabilitation of the damaged portions of its flood control projects in Oriental Mindoro. In a press statement, Sunwest said the restoration is being undertaken based on its standard warranty commitments. The company is among the 15 contractors named by President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. as those who were awarded with most flood control projects. The firm added that the repairs started on August 2 right after the heavy rains, and went full blast on August 11. Sunwest said the completion is being eyed by the end of the month. 'Sunwest is committed to ensuring that our projects remain reliable and resilient,' the company said. 'The rehabilitation is being conducted in coordination with the DPWH.'' Based on the firm's assessment, approximately 5% of the company's implemented flood control project in the province had sustained damage. Repairs are already in progress to ensure continued protection for communities vulnerable to seasonal flooding. 'We value the trust of the public and our partners in government,' the company said. 'Our priority is to deliver long-term solutions that safeguard lives and livelihoods in Mindoro and beyond.' Oriental Mindoro is one of the flood-prone areas recently cited by Marcos, who has ordered a review of the flood control projects across the country. Earlier, Governor Humerlito 'Bonz' Dolor expressed his dismay over the damaged dikes in his province, which was hit by floods due to the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat and the consecutive storms last month, even as these were put up fairly recently. Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Manuel Bonoan has vowed that the agency will conduct an intensive audit on the damaged dikes in the province. — BM, GMA Integrated News
