
‘Humanity Before Religion': Kashmiri Shawl Seller Who Carried Injured Tourist Recalls Pahalgam Attack

A day after a video of a Kashmiri man carrying a tourist on his back went viral following the brutal terrorist attack, Sajad Ahmad Bhat — the shawl hawker seen in the video — said, 'Humanity comes before religion."
Bhat said when their Pahalgam Poney Association president, Abdul Waheed Wan, dropped a message, saying there was an ongoing terrorist attack, they immediately rushed to help those who were stranded.

'We gave water to the injured and lifted those who could not walk," added Bhat.
Talking about how they extended help to all those shaken from the incident, Bhat said: 'Humanity comes before religion. It is our duty to help the tourists as they are our guests, and our livelihood depends on them. We brought many of them to the hospital.
He mentioned that they did not care about their lives when they reached and saw the tourists pleading for help.
'When I saw the tourists crying, tears came to my eyes… Their arrival lights up the lamps in our houses. Our life is incomplete without them."
The victims hailed from various states across India, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu.
In a show of solidarity and outrage, Kashmir observed a complete shutdown on April 23, with protests erupting across the region to condemn the brutal attack.

Helicopter with six on board crashes near Kedarnath
A helicopter travelling from Dehradun to Kedarnath with six people on board crashed near Gaurikund Sunday morning, the police said. 'The helicopter that went missing in Gaurikund has crashed. There were six people on board and more details are awaited,' Uttarakhand ADG Law and Order Dr V Murugeshan was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. He had earlier informed that the chopper had gone missing between Trijuginarayan and Gaurikund. In May this year, six people had died and one was injured when a helicopter going to Gangotri Dham from Dehradun crashed near Gangnani in Uttarkashi. The helicopter was going to the Gangotri Dham of the Char Dham Yatra circuit.
