The Brief
A man was arrested over the weekend after he allegedly pointed a gun at a driver at a Clermont, Florida, intersection.
Robert Bloebaum faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
CLERMONT, Fla. - A Florida man was taken to jail after he allegedly pulled out a gun on a driver at a Clermont intersection on Sunday morning.
The backstory
On Feb. 2, at around 8:37 a.m., Clermont police officers responded to the victim's home for a report of a road rage incident.
The victim said he left his residence around 8 a.m. to go to an auto parts store.
When he approached the intersection of North Ridge Boulevard and Grand Highway, he said a silver Toyota 4Runner pulled out in front of his vehicle and was driving well under the speed limit.
The victim said he drove around the Toyota, at which point the driver began "aggressively" following him "too closely," according to the arrest report.

The victim then sped up to create distance and stated it appeared "the driver was trying to play chicken with him."
At the intersection of Shady Nook and East Desoto Street, both the victim and the Toyota driver got out of their vehicles.
The victim told law enforcement he was going to ask the driver why he was following him and why he almost struck his vehicle, but that's when the suspect pointed a gun at him and told him to leave, authorities said.
The victim left, and continued to the auto parts store. After shopping inside the store, the victim noticed the Toyota was in the parking lot just a few spots from his vehicle.
The suspect reportedly continued to follow the victim in his vehicle, but the victim eventually sped off, losing sight of the vehicle. He went home and reported the incident.
What we know
Robert Bloebaum, 47, of Clermont, was identified as the suspect and was found driving the same vehicle the victim described to law enforcement. Police also found a loaded 9mm handgun on him.
The other side
Bloebaum told police he had slowed down for Sandhill cranes crossing the road when the victim's car drove past him. He admitted to following the victim and believed they were "playing chicken," according to the arrest report.
Bloebaum claimed the two got out of their vehicles at an intersection but denied pointing a gun at the victim, officials said.
Regarding his Toyota being parked outside the auto parts store, Bloebaum said it was merely a coincidence, as he is a "frequent customer" there, the report stated.
He was arrested on a felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was booked into the Lake County jail but was released after posting bail.
A criminal history search revealed no prior assault or battery arrests for him in the past six months, investigators said.

6-year-old girl detained by ICE along with mom, brother in NYC

Three family members, including a 6-year-old girl, were detained by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents after what was supposed to be a routine immigration hearing in Lower Manhattan. Efforts are underway to try to get the family out of ICE custody. Mariposa Benitez, a founder of the grassroots organization Mi Tlalli, says on Tuesday, ICE agents detained a woman named Martha, her daughter Dayra and her 19-year-old son Manuel at 26 Federal Plaza. "They came together as a family escaping the violence that they have experienced in Ecuador," Benitez said. Manuel just graduated from high school in June, and Dayra is believed to be the young student detained by ICE in New York City. She is at least the fourth city public school student to be detained by ICE this year. Benitez says Martha and Dayra are now at an ICE detention center in Dilley, Texas, and Manuel was transferred to the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. "I'm a licensed clinical social worker, and the impact of family separation on their mental health is something that they will not be able to recover from in many years to come," Benitez said. The Department of Homeland Security released a statement saying, in part, that Martha and her children entered the U.S. illegally in December 2022. "They have all received final orders of removal from an immigration judge," DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. Another of Martha's sons, who lives in Queens and did not want to share his name, said he felt destroyed when he found out his mom, his sister and his brother were detained. In Spanish, he told CBS News New York his mom admitted she was afraid of going to court, and he feels helpless. He said his mother's hugs brought him joy and peace, and his sister inherited that warmth and reassurance. Martha's boyfriend said he spoke with her recently, and she told him she's afraid of being deported and of the gangs and danger back in Ecuador. Martha's son said he feels helpless and the most painful part is not knowing when he'll be reunited with the rest of his family again. Martha's loved ones are calling for the family's reunion and release.

ICE Arrests Mexican National After He Crashes Into Government Vehicles, Injures Officer

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers arrested a Mexican national and illegal immigrant after he allegedly crashed into two government vehicles while attempting to flee from a traffic stop in his vehicle. A federal officer was injured in the crash, according to authorities. The crash happened on Aug. 11, during a joint operation between ICE and other federal law enforcement agencies in San Diego, when they attempted a traffic stop. The twice-deported man, with a prior conviction for driving under the influence, tried to evade the stop, and in doing so, collided with vehicles and caused the injury.

The girlfriend of Roberto Itzep-Caba, an 18-year-old Toombs County High School student in Georgia, said he was reportedly detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on August 8 following a routine traffic stop for failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign. The detention occurred on the teenager's second day of school as he was driving to campus after dropping his mother off at work—a routine he had followed for years without incident, according to local news station ABC 22 and a GoFundMe set up to help him. Newsweek has reached out to ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) via email on Saturday for comment. Why It Matters President Donald Trump has ordered his administration to remove millions of undocumented immigrants as he looks to fulfill his campaign pledge of widespread mass deportations. In addition to people living in the country without legal status, immigrants with valid documentation, including green cards and visas, have also been detained. Immigration authorities have been under increased scrutiny amid allegations of misconduct, with the agency at the center of the national debate over immigration policy. Concerns have been raised over the legality and human impact of ICE's enforcement practices. What To Know Itzep-Caba immigrated from Guatemala with his family when he was 4 years old and has lived in Toombs County for 14 years. He is an accomplished student-athlete, serving as a starter on the Toombs County High School soccer team and competing in cross country. Most notably, he was part of the school's first-ever State Championship soccer win in 2024. According to his girlfriend Maritza Zamorano, who organized a GoFundMe campaign for his legal defense, Itzep-Caba has no criminal record and is known for his dedication, teamwork, and leadership. He comes from a close-knit family with two sisters, one brother, and a new sibling on the way. The fundraising campaign has raised $13,358 of its $15,000 goal as of Saturday afternoon, with 336 donations from community members. The funds are designated specifically for legal representation to help secure his release and potential return home. Roberto Itzep-Caba, an 18-year-old Toombs County High School student, was reportedly detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on his second day of school. GoFundMe What People Are Saying Maritza Zamorano, Roberto's girlfriend and GoFundMe organizer, wrote in part on the fundraising page: "On the morning of August 8th, Roberto Itzep-Caba, was pulled over on his way to school after dropping off his mom at work. He didn't come to a complete stop at a stop sign, and without any warning, he was handcuffed and arrested in front of other students. Roberto has never been pulled over while driving. He wasn't given any chance or warning. He's done a lot of good things for the school and our community." She continued: "Now, instead of being in class or on the field, Roberto is in jail on an immigration hold. His family has no idea where he will be taken next. He has two sisters, one brother, and a new sibling on the way who need him home. This is his home—the only one he's ever known—and he deserves the same chance as any of us to live and grow here. I hope this reaches the right audience. Any money raised will go into helping Roberto be back home!" What Happens Next? Itzep-Caba's family is working with legal representatives to navigate the immigration detention process, though they remain uncertain about when they might see him again or where he will be transferred next. The family's immediate focus is securing adequate legal representation through the community fundraising effort.
