Conservatives rejected sexual harassment training

Yahoo06-02-2025
The Conservatives were the only Senedd party group to refuse an offer of training on sexism and sexual harassment.
A spokesperson for the Tory Senedd leader at the time, Andrew RT Davies, has said it was "left to the discretion of the individual" to take up training opportunities.
A spokesperson for current leader Darren Millar said the party "takes the issue of gender-based violence extremely seriously" and a session for group members is now "being scheduled".
Undertaking the training was a recommendation from the Senedd's cross-party equality committee.

Last year the Senedd's Equality and Social Justice Committee published a report entitled "How we must all play our part: a public health approach to halting the epidemic in gender-based violence".
One of its recommendations called for Members of the Senedd to commit to undertaking training on preventing gender-based violence (GBV) by the end of 2024.
The Senedd Commission - which runs the institution from day to day - agreed to arrange the training by an outside organisation in autumn 2024, covering in particular three areas highlighted by the committee.
These were:
increased awareness and understanding of what constitutes GBV;
improved bystander intervention skills which equip individuals with the skills to identify signs of potential GBV situations and intervene safely and effectively; and
cultural competence: understanding the complexities of addressing GBV within diverse cultural contexts.
The course developed by Bristol-based company Kindling Intervention on behalf of the Senedd Commission was "developed and tailored specifically to focus on noticing and intervening in sexism, gender stereotyping, gendered microaggressions, sexual harassment and other forms of gender-based violence against women and girls".
"Due to the participants being at senior leadership level, the training will also be further developed specifically to focus on leadership, privilege and power."
Senedd chief executive Manon Antoniazzi told equality committee chair Jenny Rathbone in a letter that the Welsh Parliament's member learning and engagement team "have extensive experience of working with party groups to provide training for members and recognise that there is a distinct preference for training within those groups on topics of particular sensitivity, such as this".
"Timetabling training for members also proves to be a challenge and so party group buy-in is sought to ensure optimum member attendance to the training on offer."
However, she adds, "having approached all party groups, two party groups took up the opportunity to take up this training in the autumn term of 2024".
"The third party group were unfortunately unable to afford the time/capacity to dedicate to this topic."
Twenty two members from the Labour and Plaid Cymru groups took up the training offer, representing 37% of all members.
A Welsh Conservative Senedd spokesperson told the BBC, "The Welsh Conservative Senedd group takes the issue of gender-based violence extremely seriously".
"We undertake regular training and continuing professional development sessions on a range of issues, and a session for group members on gender-based violence is being scheduled."
A spokesperson for former leader Andrew RT Davies said: "Members and staff are offered a range of training courses."
"Under Andrew's leadership, it was left to the discretion of the individual whether or not they chose to take up those training opportunities."
Equality committee chair, Labour MS Jenny Rathbone, said at the time of the report's publication that "two women a week are killed by a former or current partner in England and Wales".
"A third of women will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime.
"Due to under-reporting, it is likely that official figures underestimate the true scale of this shocking problem.
"Each victim of this epidemic is a victim too many.
"To end it, we must all play our part – especially men and boys – by tackling the root causes."

Trump to send FBI on night patrols in DC: Reports

The Trump administration will send the FBI on night patrols in the nation's capital in the wake of President Trump threatening to federalize the District of Columbia, according to multiple reports. The Washington Post has reported that close to 120 FBI agents are beginning to be deployed for nightlong shifts to assist D.C. law enforcement in halting Washington-based carjackings and violent crime, two sources with knowledge of the situation told the outlet. A spokesperson for the FBI told The New York Times that there was involvement 'in the increased federal law enforcement presence in Washington' by its agents and pointed the outlet to the White House. The post first reported on the FBI night shifts. A White House official told NewsNation's Kellie Meyer that around 450 federal officers would be 'in high traffic areas and other known hotspot across Washington, DC.' 'Everyone who lives in our Nation's capital knows homelessness and crime are plaguing this city,' White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement obtained by Meyer. 'You can thank President Trump for finally taking action to clean it up. Under President Trump's leadership, DC will be safe and beautiful again for its residents, lawmakers, and visitors from around the world,' the press secretary added. Last week, a young man was allegedly beaten via an attempted carjacking in Washington. The man turned out to be Edward Coristine, who gained attention earlier this year due to the combination of his position in tech billionaire Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency and the nickname of 'Big Balls.' On Tuesday, Trump posted a message on social media featuring a photo of a bloodied Coristine as well as his sentiments that crime in the nation's capital was 'totally out of control.' The president also said that 'if D.C. doesn't get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run.'

Trump lawyer Alan Dershowitz offered free pierogi for life after Martha's Vineyard dumpling row

Alan Dershowitz might not be able to get his pierogi fix among the woke on Martha's Vineyard, but a Florida peddler of the doughy delights is offering more than enough for the ex-Trump lawyer to fill his belly. South Florida-based Peter Nowocien, owner of PierogiOne restaurant, told The Post that no one should ever be denied the Polish comfort food staple — and pledged to send Dershowitz and his family free pierogi for life. 'Pierogi should bring people together — not divide them,' said Nowocien, a Polish immigrant who moved to the US six years ago. South Florida-based pierogi slinger Peter Nowocien has pledged to send the president's former lawyer, Alan Dershowitz, free pierogi for life after he was denied service in Martha's Vineyard. Obtained by NY Post In a highly publicized clash on Martha's Vineyard earlier this month, the 86-year-old Dershowitz — a retired Harvard Law prof and former lawyer to President Trump and Jeffrey Epstein — got into it with a local pierogi vendor who refused to sell his goodies to him. Dershowitz last week announced he is filing a discrimination suit against the West Tisbury Farmers Market where he claims he was denied service over his politics. Dershowitz's disturbing experience did not sit right with the Trump-supporting Nowocien, who grew up under Communism. 'As a Polish immigrant, I hate to hear about discrimination in the US because of people's political views,' said the 39-year-old, whose father fought against Communism. 'That shouldn't happen here. Dershowitz took to his YouTube channel last week to announcing he was filing a discrimination suit against the market he claims denied him service on the basis of his politics. Stephen Yang 'Discrimination breeds injustice.' Nowocien, a member of Trump's Mar-a-Lago retreat in Florida, insisted, 'While we may not all agree on politics, no one should be denied a pierogi — or food. This should never happen in the US.' The businessman said that while the Jewish Dershowitz may not dive into his shop's special Philly cheesesteak, spicy beef or bacon and cheddar variety pierogis, the traditional cheese and potato and mushroom and sauerkraut are classic options. 'I believe the American dream is still possible – because I'm living it,' he said. Contrasting his life growing up in the shadow of Communism to the capitalist bastion of the US, Nowocien praised the 'highest levels of personal freedom' in the US compared to Europe. 'And we must protect it. Poland has a very tough history. We know what happens when Nazis and Communists try to divide people,' he said. 'I want to bring people together through food. 'We may not all agree on politics, but no one should be denied a seat at the table.'
