ESPN announces ‘Around the Horn' will end nearly 23-year run on May 23

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — ESPN's 'Around the Horn' will air its final episode on Friday, May 23, ending a nearly 23-year run.
The weekday sports discussion and debate show has been a mainstay at 5 p.m. EST since its debut episode on Nov. 4, 2002. Tony Reali has been the show's main host since 2004. He replaced Max Kellerman, who was the host for the first two years.
The show, which has had more than 4,900 episodes, features four panelists — mostly sports columnists — who tried to earn points and avoid being muted by Reali as they gave their opinions on the biggest sports stories of the day.
'Around the Horn has had a remarkable run of more than two decades. That kind of longevity in media is incredibly rare, and we look forward to celebrating the show's many accomplishments before the final sign-off in May,' David Roberts, ESPN's executive vice president and executive editor for sports news end Entertainment, said in a statement. 'Beyond Tony and the ensemble of on-air contributors, we are particularly grateful to the production team led by Erik Rydholm and Aaron Solomon, who have been instrumental in ATH's consistent success since the very beginning.'
Woody Paige, who holds the show record for most appearances and wins, said on social media after the announcement, 'My records will never be broken. But my heart is broken.'
ESPN NFL analyst Mina Kimes added: 'The show that gave me the confidence to even believe someone like me could do TV. Will be forever grateful to the producers, and also Tony Reali, who models kindness and intelligence in a way that's all too rare these days.
ESPN announced that a 30-minute edition of 'SportsCenter' will air in the 5 p.m. EST weekday spot during the summer.
'Pardon The Interruption,' featuring Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser, has aired at 5:30 p.m. EST since Oct. 22, 2001, but there have been no announcements on its future.

Guardians option ALCS home run hitter Jhonkensy Noel to Triple-A Columbus

CLEVELAND (AP) — Jhonkensy Noel, who hit a game-tying homer in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series, was optioned to Triple-A Columbus by the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday. Noel batted only .146 with two homers and nine RBIs in 46 games after making the opening day roster for the first time. The right-handed hitter found himself on the short side of a platoon in right field, limiting him to 103 at-bats. 'It hasn't been the start to the season that he would have liked or that we would have liked,' manager Stephen Vogt said. 'We know how good of a player that he is, so we told Jhonkensy to just go play, go relax and go back to being you.' Nicknamed 'Big Christmas,' the 6-foot-3, 250-pounder belted a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the ninth inning of what became a 7-5 victory over the New York Yankees in 10 innings last Oct. 17. Cleveland lost the ALCS in five games, but Noel's shot to left field was one of the more memorable moments at Progressive Field since the ballpark opened in 1994. 'We still hold true to the belief that Jhonkensy — the best version of him — helps us win games,' Vogt said. 'He plays an unbelievable right field, he's a good baserunner and he has the power to hit it out of the yard. It just hasn't been there yet this year.' Johnathan Rodriguez was recalled from Columbus and started in right field in the Guardians' three-game series finale against the Houston Astros. Cleveland also announced that outfielder Will Brennan and right-hander Andrew Walters will both undergo surgery Monday. Brennan has been sidelined with left elbow inflammation since May 22, while Walters experienced a right lat strain May 30 while pitching against Angels star Mike Trout. ___

Missouri Tigers Crack Top 25 of ESPN's Power Index Rankings

Missouri Tigers Crack Top 25 of ESPN's Power Index Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In recent rankings from various analysts, the Missouri Tigers have been left out of the top 25. In ESPN's recent Football Power Index (FPI) rankings, however, Mizzou made the cut. Advertisement The FPI estimates each FBS team's strengths on all three sides of the ball, and it takes into account all roster movements during the offseason. Those strength projections are then run through a simulation of the team's upcoming schedule 20,000 times to calculate average projections for their success throughout the season. Missouri ranks No. 23 for projected strength, and they've been given a projected win-loss total of 6.9-5.2. As has been the trend in recent seasons, the defense has continued to turn heads. The Tigers' defense is ranked No. 17 in the country with an FPI score of 6.2. Mizzou is also projected to compete in one of the "most anticipated" games of the season, based on ESPN's game quality analytics that gauge both team's FPI scores. Advertisement In Week 7, the Tigers will host Alabama, ranking No. 23 out of the top 25 matchups of the season. The game earned an 89.2 rating, and it'll mark the first time since 2020 that Mizzou has hosted the Crimson Tide. Of the 16 schools in the Southeastern Conference, 13 of them ranked within ESPN's top 25 with Texas, Georgia and Alabama taking No. 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The simulations projected an average of 4.6 teams from the SEC will make the College Football Playoff, and Missouri made the Playoff in 9.2 percent of the simulations. Missouri Tigers mascot Truman dances on the sideline against the Iowa Hawkeyes during the second half at Nissan Roberts-Imagn Images As the FPI rankings show, the Tigers' defense has a real shot at being one of the best units in the country, but there's less confidence on the other side of the ball. Especially with new starters at quarterback, running back, wide receiver and three offensive line spots. Advertisement Regardless, summer has arrived and the 2025 season is right around the corner. Missouri's motto of having 'something to prove' will need to hold up.
