Suits & Sayings: Family Business

Suits & Sayings
Now that the rift in this Delhi-based business family is public—something this column had alluded to last week—friends of the Punjabi household can't stop wondering if there is some larger shadow boxing at play, sparked by the recent bereavement . Sections of the extended family have, in the past, supposedly attempted to take over the business during moments of vulnerability, but were unsuccessful, as per Lutyens lore. Efforts to use proxies within the family to litigate over the use of the brand name have also failed. Would this be a third attempt? The clue may well be in the decision to proceed with their annual summer bash , so soon after the recent tragedy. Clearly there's not much love lost between uncles and nephews and siblings .

Qualcomm Slides After Posting Lackluster Phone Chip Sales

(Bloomberg) -- Qualcomm Inc., the biggest maker of chips that run smartphones, fell in late trading after reporting lackluster growth in that market, fueling concerns that tariffs will take a toll on the industry. Phone-related sales rose 7% to $6.33 billion in the fiscal third quarter, which ended June 29, Qualcomm said in a statement Wednesday. The average analyst estimate was $6.48 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The results add to broader fears that a chip growth resurgence is under threat. In recent days, chipmakers such as Texas Instruments Inc. and Intel Corp. gave cautious outlooks, triggering concern that a sales rebound will be short-lived. Qualcomm shares fell more than 6% in late trading following Wednesday's announcement. Heading into the earnings report, the chipmaker's stock had already lagged a general rally by semiconductor stocks this year. Arm Holdings Plc, another chip technology provider that serves the smartphone industry, also reported results on Wednesday. Its shares declined after a profit forecast came in below estimates, hurt by spending on new products. Qualcomm's revenue in the quarter ending in September will be $10.3 billion to $11.1 billion, the San Diego-based company said. That compares with an average analyst estimates of $10.6 billion. Third-quarter profit was $2.77 a share, excluding some items. Revenue gained 10% to $10.37 billion. Wall Street had predicted a profit of $2.72 a share and sales of $10.33 billion. Revenue from chips used in vehicles rose 21% to $984 million. Connected-device semiconductor sales, meanwhile, climbed 24% to $1.68 billion. Qualcomm supplies processors and modems that are the main components of the world's most advanced smartphones. The chipmaker also collects fees calculated as a percentage of the cost of a handset, regardless of whether the phone maker uses its chips. An ongoing challenge for Qualcomm is Apple Inc.'s decision to make its own modem chips for the iPhone. Qualcomm has told investors to expect its supplies in the device to be fully replaced, but delays in the development of an Apple part have lengthened this transition. Apple currently has an in-house modem in one of its iPhones, the low-end 16e. (Updates shares starting in fourth paragraph.) More stories like this are available on

Smart traffic signals go blank; VIP movements, system glitches force commuters to hit brakes in Guwahati

1 2 3 Guwahati: Growing traffic congestion at key junctions across the city continues to frustrate commuters. Compounding the problem, according to many, is the non-functional integrated traffic management system (ITMS), which has led to daily chaos. The automated traffic signals, introduced to streamline city traffic, have gone dark — forcing traffic police personnel to manually manage intersections. The malfunctioning signals are particularly evident at Noonmati, Six Mile, and Paltan Bazar junctions. The Six Mile crossing — an important intersection connecting Chachal, Panjabari, and Khanapara — was meant to be managed automatically under ITMS. However, with the system defunct, vehicles frequently violate traffic rules, worsening congestion. Prayas Kakati, chief project manager at Guwahati Smart City Limited (GSCL), said several ITMS signals have stopped working largely due to uncoordinated work by multiple govt . "The absence of proper coordination and prior consultation affects underground cables, which disrupt signal operations. A few signals were also taken down due to construction. We've identified the problems and are working on them," Kakati said. He added that GSCL is collaborating with the city's traffic police to address the issue, as ITMS also struggles to manage the growing number of vehicles. The system often switches to blinker mode under heavy traffic pressure, prompting manual intervention by traffic personnel. Residents are increasingly vocal in their concerns. "These systems haven't worked properly for months. On weekends, there's often no traffic police on duty. The government has spent crores of rupees on this project, but execution has been poor," said Prakrit Devnath, a Six Mile resident. Another commuter, Roopak Barua, said, "During VIP movements when ministers visit, ITMS is either turned off or overridden manually, causing further jams. " The project, initiated with a budget of Rs 78.44 crore, includes 66 active ITMS signals. The tender was awarded to Technosys Security System Private Limited, a Ghaziabad-based company, for a five-year term.

TikTok launches crowd-sourced debunking tool ‘Footnotes' in US

TikTok on Wednesday rolled out a crowd-sourced debunking system in the United States, becoming the latest tech platform to adopt a community-driven approach to combating online misinformation. TikTok said nearly 80,000 US-based users, who have maintained an account for at least six months, have qualified as Footnotes contributors.(Representative image/unsplash) Footnotes, a feature that the popular video-sharing app began testing in April, allows vetted users to suggest written context for content that might be wrong or misleading -- similar to Community Notes on Meta and X. "Footnotes draws on the collective knowledge of the TikTok community by allowing people to add relevant information to content," Adam Presser, the platform's head of operations and trust and safety, said in a blog post. "Starting today, US users in the Footnotes pilot program can start to write and rate footnotes on short videos, and our US community will begin to see the ones rated as helpful -- and rate them, too," he added. TikTok said nearly 80,000 US-based users, who have maintained an account for at least six months, have qualified as Footnotes contributors. The video-sharing app has some 170 million US users. TikTok said the feature will augment the platform's existing integrity measures such as labeling content that cannot be verified and partnering with fact-checking organizations, such as AFP, to assess the accuracy of posts on the platform. The crowd-sourced verification system was popularized by Elon Musk's platform X, but researchers have repeatedly questioned its effectiveness in combating falsehoods. Earlier this month, a study found more than 90 percent of X's Community Notes are never published, highlighting major limits in efficacy. The Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas (DDIA) study analyzed the entire public dataset of 1.76 million notes published by X between January 2021 and March 2025. TikTok cautioned it may take some time for a footnote to become public, as contributors get started and become more familiar with the feature. "The more footnotes get written and rated on different topics, the smarter and more effective the system becomes," Presser said. Tech platforms increasingly view the community-driven model as an alternative to professional fact-checking. Earlier this year, Meta ended its third-party fact-checking program in the United States, with chief executive Mark Zuckerberg saying it had led to "too much censorship." The decision was widely seen as an attempt to appease President Donald Trump, whose conservative base has long complained that fact-checking on tech platforms serves to curtail free speech and censor right-wing content. Professional fact-checkers vehemently reject the claim. As an alternative, Zuckerberg said Meta's platforms, Facebook and Instagram, would use "Community Notes." Studies have shown Community Notes can work to dispel some falsehoods, like vaccine misinformation, but researchers have long cautioned that it works best for topics where there is broad consensus. Some researchers have also cautioned that Community Notes users can be motivated to target political opponents by partisan beliefs.
