Artist Hazem Harb's 10-year-old niece killed by Israeli airstrike in Gaza: 'I lost my trust in humanity'
The Palestinian artist, known for confronting loss through his work, now finds himself mourning the ineffable.
'I am the one who named Lara,' Harb, who lives in Dubai, says. 'When she was born, my sister Huda asked me to name her. I am close to my sister and I had a profound connection to Lara. She was an incredibly smart and beautiful child. She was the first in her class. I could write a book about her.'
Huda and her children were returning from a visit to their sister's house on Thursday when the airstrikes hit. The visit was meant to be a small relief – a respite from the monotony and fear brought on by Israel's war on Gaza.
'The children were getting restless. Like many children in Gaza right now, they have no toys or anything to distract them. They are home most of the time so, naturally, they get restless and bored,' Harb says. 'Lara asked my sister to get them. Huda took them to my older sister's house.'
While Lara's two sisters and brother survived the airstrike with minimal injuries, her head was struck by shrapnel. 'She remained under intensive care for nearly two nights,' Harb says. 'We didn't have much hope. She was breathing, but she was unconscious. We received news on Saturday that she was martyred.'
Huda, meanwhile, suffered significant injuries to her stomach and head.
'Huda is now in intensive care. We moved her to a house because there is no proper hospital or infrastructure to care for her. She can't process anything right now. Her injuries are extremely dangerous, and she can't yet process that she lost her daughter.
'There are no words left to describe the horror we are living and the loss my family and I have endured,' Harb adds. 'Lara was the entire world to her parents and to our family. She is one of tens of thousand of children slaughtered by this monstrous state. Each of them, the entire world to their families, and each of them mattered.'
This tragedy, he points out, is one of innumerable ones ripping families apart in Gaza. Their deaths are not tragic mistakes, but the result of systematic brutality by Israel.
At least 59,029 Palestinians have been killed and 142,135 wounded since October 2023. According to a May report by Unicef, more than 50,000 children were either killed or injured in the Palestinian enclave.
'Everyone is starving to death, literally,' Harb says. 'Feelings have almost no meaning. Sadness, loss and grief are almost secondary because you are dying from the inside. You are dying from hunger, so all feelings are mixing incomprehensibly together.
'I lost my trust in humanity,' he adds. 'How can this happen? How can this happen in today's world? We aren't learning from history. We are seeing these horrors on our screens. I have no hope, no trust in humanity.'
Tabari Artspace, the Dubai gallery that represents the artist, issued a statement in response to the tragedy.
'This devastating loss is a painful reminder of the reality thousands face daily in Gaza,' the gallery posted on Instagram. 'Children and innocent people continue to die – from bombs, from starvation, from systemic violence. These are not just headlines. These are lives. This demands our attention, our outrage and our compassion. No forgiveness.'

Acronis uncovers sophisticated malware campaign targeting gamers; Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Türkiye among most impacted
Dubai, United Arab Emirates – The Acronis Threat Research Unit (TRU) has uncovered details of a sophisticated, consumer-focused malware campaign exploiting the global popularity of online gaming—an industry valued at over US$7 billion in the Middle East alone and projected to grow rapidly as young, digitally native audiences fuel demand. The researchers identified that among the most impacted countries globally are three Middle East nations — Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Türkiye. This underscores the urgent need for awareness among regional gamers who are particularly active on platforms like Discord, where much of the malicious content is distributed. The campaign targets consumers, particularly gamers aged 18–35. Victims are lured with what appear to be beta versions of indie games such as Baruda Quest, Warstorm Fire, and Dire Talon, but instead what ends up being downloaded is infostealer malware like Leet Stealer, RMC Stealer, and Sniffer Stealer. This malicious software steals sensitive information including login credentials, payment details, and crypto wallets and can result in account takeovers, financial loss, and extortion. Unlike most malware that focuses on corporate networks, this campaign exploits the enthusiasm of the gaming community, particularly those eager to access unreleased or early-access content. 'This campaign is notable for its sophistication and its focus on what could be considered a highly tech-savvy demograhic,' said Jozsef Gegeny, Senior Researcher at Acronis TRU. 'Our team uncovered the threat by analysing a wave of suspicious files and websites masquerading as legitimate game content, which were spreading largely undetected by major antivirus tools. While enterprises are often protected by managed service providers and robust defences, consumers remain highly exposed to such risks. That's why it's important for the cybersecurity community to shine a light on threats that target individuals and not just corporations.' The attackers use stolen branding, fake promotional websites, and even dedicated YouTube channels to make the games appear authentic. Popular platforms like Discord are used to share links to fake installers, taking advantage of the trust gamers place in these communities. Acronis found malware disguised as downloaders which displayed convincing errors during installation to mask their true intent. The campaign, first observed spreading in Brazil and the United States, has now been seen globally, with the Middle East emerging as a key hotspot given its young and highly engaged gaming population. Dubai: Driver arrested in hit-and-run case causing serious injury
Dubai's Traffic Prosecution has ordered the arrest of two individuals following a serious hit-and-run incident. The first individual was involved in a run-over accident that caused severe injuries to the victim. The accused fled the accident scene instead of stopping to help. He also failed to provide assistance or first aid. Authorities say the accident was a result of reckless driving, negligence, and a disregard for the safety of others. The second accused, a garage owner, is being charged for repairing the damaged vehicle without securing a permit from the proper traffic authority, an illegal act under UAE law. Senior Advocate General Counselor Salah Bu Farousha Al Falasi, Head of the Traffic Prosecution, called on all drivers to stay alert, follow traffic laws, and prioritise the safety of everyone on the road. He stressed that leaving the scene of an accident involving injuries is a serious offence unless there is an extreme and justifiable emergency. Drivers must report such accidents within three hours, in line with the latest amendments to the Traffic Law. Authorities warn that any attempt to escape responsibility, whether by drivers or those aiding them, will be met with firm legal action.
