Egypt's Al-Sisi meets central bank chief, calls for continued efforts to increase dollar inflows
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi on Monday stressed the need to continue efforts to increase the country's foreign currency reserves, particularly from local sources, and to maintain a flexible and unified exchange rate, the presidency said. Al-Sisi's comments came during a meeting with Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) Governor Hassan Abdalla to discuss the performance of the Egyptian economy. They also reviewed the global economic situation and the impact of international challenges on the macroeconomy. 'The president emphasized that the sufficient availability of dollar resources positively reflects on providing a reassuring stock of various commodities, petroleum products, as well as production inputs for factories,' the spokesperson, Mohamed El-Shennawy, said in a statement. Egypt's net international reserves climbed to $49.036bn in July 2025, up from $48.700bn in June—an increase of approximately $336m. This marks the highest level of foreign currency reserves ever recorded in Egypt, supported by stronger inflows from export earnings, tourism revenues, remittances from Egyptians abroad, and foreign direct investment. Al-Sisi also called for continued coordination between the government and the central bank to ensure the maintenance of a flexible and unified exchange rate for foreign currency. The meeting also addressed providing opportunities and financing for the private sector to drive economic growth, attract more investment flows, and maximize the private sector's role in economic activity. In this context, the president directed that incentives be enhanced to take advantage of available economic opportunities and that the private sector be empowered to drive growth. He stressed the need for 'intensive work to provide favourable conditions for attracting more foreign investment and empowering the private sector,' the spokesperson said.

Egypt studies converting Helwan Iron into textile industries complex
Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel Al-Wazir has announced that the government is studying the conversion of the Helwan Iron and Steel Company into a major complex for textile industries and supporting industries for ready-made garments, with the aim of attracting foreign investments and boosting local value-added. Al-Wazir directed ministry officials to strengthen integration across industrial chains and deepen complementary industries for the garments sector, in order to reduce the import bill for production inputs. The announcement came during his visit to Technotex Factory, part of El-Nile Group, located in the Second Industrial Zone in 15th of May City. The facility, spanning 55,000 sqm, has an annual production capacity of 9.5 million pieces and a local component ratio of 35%. It exports 100% of its output, valued at EGP 3bn annually, to 12 international markets including the United States, Europe, and Turkey. The group currently employs 5,000 workers. During the visit, Al-Wazir inspected the production halls for shirts, trousers, packaging, the laser section, and the washing unit. He also reviewed the group's 2026 plan presented by factory director Walid Kamal, which targets raising production capacity to 14.7 million pieces annually, increasing the workforce to 8,000 employees, and expanding exports to EGP 4.7bn. The minister praised the factory's performance and emphasised the competitiveness of Egyptian ready-made garments in global markets. He underscored the sector's importance as a labour-intensive, energy-efficient industry in which Egypt enjoys a strong reputation, stressing that the country has all the ingredients to advance it — from raw material availability and skilled labour to advanced technology and knowledge.

Egypt, Japan discuss economic ties, preparations for TICAD conference
Egyptian and Japanese officials have discussed strengthening their economic relations and preparations for the upcoming Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), Egypt's planning ministry said. Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, Rania Al-Mashat, met with Japanese Ambassador to Cairo, Fumio Iwai, and the chief representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Egypt, Ebisawa Yu, the ministry said in a statement on Sunday. Al-Mashat praised the economic and development relations between the two countries, which span more than 70 years, and highlighted the elevation of bilateral ties to a strategic partnership during the visit of former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to Egypt in April 2023. The officials discussed various aspects of their cooperation, particularly in sectors prioritised by the Egyptian government, including education, health, human capital investment, and the green economy transition. They also expressed their anticipation for the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum in early November and reaffirmed their commitment to completing the fourth phase of the Greater Cairo Metro. With the 9th edition of TICAD scheduled for Aug. 20-22, Al-Mashat emphasized the conference's importance in strengthening African-Japanese relations and creating constructive partnerships to advance development in Africa. She underscored the importance of exploring new opportunities for trilateral economic and investment cooperation between Egypt, Japan, and African countries, particularly in renewable energy. The minister also reaffirmed the government's aspiration to increase investments and participation by the Japanese private sector, JICA, and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to support development financing for the private sector in Egypt. Japan is one of Egypt's most important Asian development partners, with a current cooperation portfolio of about 18 development projects. The total technical support and grants provided by Japan amount to approximately $2.4 billion, in addition to development financing of approximately $7.2 billion in various fields, the ministry said.
