Mariah Carey Is ‘Looking for the Dangerous Type' on First New Single in Years: Here's When It Arrives

Mariah Carey likes living on the edge. In a teaser announcing her new single Wednesday (June 4), the Songbird Supreme beats around no bushes when describing her type: dangerous. In a video posted to her social media accounts, Mimi sits behind the wheel of a luxurious car and poses in a 'Type: Dangerous' tank top while singing over a groovy, percussion-heavy beat. 'Looking for the dangerous type,' she belts. 'I like them dangerous/ That's my type/ I said I love them dangerous.' The announcement comes just a couple of days after Carey first teased the track, sending Lambs into a tizzy with the prospect of the star's first proper new music in years. She last dropped an album, Caution, in 2018 — but on Monday (June 2), she posted video hinting at both the new song and 'MC16,' more than likely referring to her upcoming 16th LP. Despite taking her time on her next album, Carey has certainly been active in the years since Caution debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200. In addition to guesting on Ariana Grande's 'Yes, And?' remix in 2024 and promoting iconic smash 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' each year, the vocalist has kept her Lambs fed with anniversary re-releases of her most iconic albums. Most recently, she celebrated 20 years of The Emancipation of Mimi by dropping an expansive new multi-disc version of the chart-topping album in May, featuring bonus tracks, remixes, collaborations with other artists, a capella versions of songs and live recordings. Mariah Carey Makes a ‘Dangerous' Comeback With First New Song in Years: Stream It Now

Mariah Carey isn't playing it safe on new single 'Type Dangerous,' which ushered in a new musical era for the vocalist Thursday (June 5). Featuring the superstar singing over a swaggering, percussion-heavy beat, the track showcases Mimi channeling her sultriest, most confident self. 'Looking for the dangerous type,' she croons. 'I like them dangerous/ That's my type/ I said I love them dangerous.' In that same clip, the camera panned down to show that the vehicle's license plate displayed the characters, 'MC16' — leading fans to conclude that the Songbird Supreme also has a new album on the way. 'Type Dangerous' serves as Carey's first proper single in years, with the five-time Grammy winner last dropping an album, Caution, in 2018. The project — which marked the 15th album in her discography — reached No. 5 on the Billboard 200. Carey has since busied herself with her annual 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' promotional cycles, as well as celebrating the anniversaries of her most iconic albums. Most recently, she commemorated The Emancipation of Mimi turning 20 years old by dropping an expansive two-disc set compiling numerous remixes, bonus tracks, radio mixes and a cappella cuts. (Billboard also celebrated the milestone by ranking all 18 of the album's original tracks.) Listen to Carey's new song 'Type Dangerous' below. Mariah Carey Seemingly Teases New Album, With Single Possibly Coming Really Soon

Mariah Carey is stepping into a new era. After going nearly seven years without dropping a proper album, the pop superstar appeared to tease on social media that she has a new LP in the works — and the first taste of it may be coming sooner than you think. In one video posted Monday (June 2), Mimi looks as glamorous as ever while sitting in a car, listening to a single with a groovy club beat on the radio. The video then cuts to a shot of the screen displaying an untitled track — 'T:D_MC16.mp3.' 'To show my appreciation for your support, thank you DJs,' Carey's smoky voice says as the track heats up. More from Billboard Mariah Carey's 'The Emancipation of Mimi': All 18 Original Tracks Ranked for Its 20th Anniversary (Staff Picks) Jessie J Reveals 'Early Breast Cancer' Diagnosis: 'Cancer Sucks in Any Form' Big Thief Announce New Album, 'Double Infinity' The clip then pans to the car's license plate, which displays the following: 'MC16.' The caption reads, 'What's your type?' — the same message that the video ends with. Based on the license plate, it looks like the Songbird Supreme is finally following up 2018's Caution, which was the 15th album in her discography — as in, her next LP will be her 16th, or 'MC16.' It would also appear that the first single could arrive Friday (June 6), based on another video Carey posted on Instagram one day after the first one. In the second clip, she sits again in a car while music plays on the stereo system, the engine loudly running before the shot cuts to a message reading, 'June 6.' Billboard has reached out to Carey's reps for comment. Though the 'Obsessed' singer has been active over the years with her yearly 'All I Want for Christmas' pushes, fans have been growing increasingly impatient for fresh music. Carey's last album, Caution, reached No. 5 on the Billboard 200, one of 18 top 10 entries she's scored on the chart over the course of her career. The new teasers come just a few days after Carey celebrated the 20th anniversary of one of her most iconic albums, The Emancipation of Mimi, which spent two weeks at No. 1 in 2005. To mark the occasion, she recently released a special multi-disc anniversary edition of the project, featuring remixes, bonus tracks, radio mixes and a cappella cuts compiled together in one place for the first time.
