Fired New York high school basketball coach sued by former star after viral hair-pulling incident
A former upstate New York high school women's basketball player has filed a lawsuit against her former coach and school district after the coach pulled her hair earlier this year, according to the Daily Gazette.
Hailey Monroe, a senior at Northville High School in Northville, N.Y., at the time of the incident, alleges in a lawsuit filed Monday that fired coach Jim Zullo had 'a reputation and history of inappropriate, aggressive and dangerous conduct' toward his players, which the school had been notified about, per the report.
'(The district) had been made aware of and knew of defendant James Zullo's propensity to be inappropriately aggressive towards players on the Northville girls' basketball team, including (Monroe), and had a long history of both physical and psychological abuse of students both in and out of the Northville Central School District,' the lawsuit reads, according to the paper. — Robbie Harvey (@therobbieharvey) March 22, 2025
Monroe reportedly is seeking unspecified damages with the lawsuit, claiming she 'has been substantially damaged and suffered a monetary loss.'
The shocking situation unfolded in March during the NYSPHSAA Class D championship game when Zullo pulled Monroe's ponytail after a 43-37 loss to La Fargeville and then yelled at her.
Monroe, the school's all-time leading scorer, appeared to be crying at the moment, and a teammate stood somewhat between her and Zullo, as seen in the game's broadcast.
Zullo continued to yell and point at her before he chided the other player.
Zullo told news10.com that Monroe cursed at him after he told her to shake hands with the other team.
'I deeply regret my behavior following the loss to La Fargeville Friday night in the Class D state championship game,' Zullo later said to WNYT. 'I want to offer my sincerest apologies to Hailey and her family, our team, the good folks at Northville Central Schools and our community. As a coach, under no circumstance is it acceptable to put my hands on a player, and I am truly sorry.'
He added, 'I wish I could have those moments back. I am grateful for the opportunity to have coached girls' basketball at Northville the past two years, especially last season, which was a difficult time for our family.'
A broadcast of the game captured the shocking moment, and the school fired Zullo.
'The Northville Central School District is aware of, and deeply disturbed by, the conduct of the Coach of the Girls' Varsity basketball team during the Class D New York State championship game. We hold our coaches to the highest standards of professionalism, sportsmanship, and respect for our student-athletes, and this behavior is completely unacceptable,' the school said in a statement, per CBS6.
'The District is committed to ensuring that this type of behavior has no place within our programs, and we will continue to uphold the values of respect and integrity that our athletes, families and community expect and deserve. This individual will no longer be coaching for the Northville Central School District.'
Monroe's family lodged a complaint with Hudson Valley Community College officials — the host of the game — leading to the 81-year-old Zullo being charged with second-degree harassment, per the outlet.
He reportedly pled guilty last month, resulting in a one-year ban from contact with Monroe and a $120 surcharge. His attorney previously told the paper that Zullo moved to Florida.
'He was obviously in the wrong at that moment,' attorney Robert Abdella told the Daily Gazette, 'but it should be nothing more than a footnote to what was a great career.'

The Beer Store adds 12 more locations to its long list of closures this year
Ontario's Beer Store has added another 12 locations to its ever-growing list of closures as alcohol sales grow in the province's grocery and convenience stores. The closures, effective Oct. 19, are scattered across the province, but include three stores in Toronto, and adds to the 44 locations that the retailer has already closed or will be closing. 'The Beer Store is modernizing to meet the changing marketplace and unfortunately this means making the hard decision to close retail locations,' Ozzie Ahmed, vice-president of retail at the Beer Store, said in a release. 'We know this is difficult news for customers. As the Beer Store modernizes, our locations will continue to provide friendly customer service and a deposit return system that gets consumers their money back.' The Beer Store, legally operating as Brewers Retail Inc., once had a near monopoly on beer sales in Ontario for decades, but that has slowly changed since 2015, when the provincial government opened the door to beer and wine sales in some grocery stores. Ontario Premier Doug Ford expanded the program last year by opening beer sales to all grocery stores and convenience stores. As part of the plan, he announced $225 million in public funding to help the Beer Store maintain at least 300 locations through the end of 2025. The company had 407 stores in 2024, according to its operations report that year. Traffic alert: Emergency bridge work closes lanes on Massachusetts Turnpike
State transportation officials are urging drivers to avoid part of the Massachusetts Turnpike on Monday due to emergency bridge repair work that is causing traffic delays. Crews were working on the I-90 eastbound bridge that carries traffic over Brookfield Road in Charlton at mile marker 82.3, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. Two eastbound travel lanes have been closed to allow for the work. 'Drivers traveling through the affected area should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution,' MassDOT warned in a statement. 'Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.' MassDOT said that the lane closures are expected to remain in place for several hours. 2025 Tour Championship purse, payouts: How much is up for grabs at East Lake in the FedExCup Playoffs?
The end of the FedExCup Playoffs are here. The last 30 golfers standing will hit the course this week at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta with the FedExCup on the line. With it comes a massive $40 million purse — a quarter of which will go to the winner come Sunday afternoon. The purse is the largest on Tour each season, more than double that of what was offered at the British Open and PGA Championships. That, however, doesn't matter anymore after the PGA Tour opted to eliminate the starting strokes format for this final event. Scheffler and the 29 golfers will all start the week at even par, meaning the tournament is still up for grabs. Scheffler, however, is undoubtedly the favorite. He has now won 12 times in the past two seasons on Tour, three of which have come at major championships, and he's finished inside the top 10 in every start he's made dating back to March. He's starting the week listed at +125 to win on BetMGM. If Scheffler can win this week, he'd be the first back-to-back winner in FedExCup history.
