Cristiano Ronaldo spoke about facing next generation FC Barcelona superstar Lamine Yamal ahead of their two countries Portugal and Spain meeting in the Nations League final on Sunday. Furthermore, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner also discussed the possibility of playing alongside Lionel Messi.
Understandably so, the Nations League decider is being talked up as more Ronaldo vs. Lamine than a showdown between Iberian neighbors, which the veteran of the pair understands perfectly.
'It's always like this. Whenever there is a final it is Cristiano against someone. You would have to compare Lamine with Vitinha, where there is less of an age difference, but they want to do it with Cristiano. It's always Cristiano against someone, but it's not like that. We play one team against another. What we want is to play a good game and win,' Ronaldo stated.
'The boy is doing things very, very well. The club and the national team help him a lot. He is in a conducive environment. But I ask that you let the boy grow up for the sake of football. Let him grow calmly and take the pressure off him. You can help him by leaving him alone because he does not lack talent,' he then added about Lamine.
'My son likes Lamine. I have a very special affection for Spain. The greatest talents have always been Spanish. Williams is a great player, Pedri is great... The coach has done a very top job, you can see that he puts discipline into them. I hope tomorrow will be a nice game and that Portugal can win.'
Asked about the Ballon d'Or for which Lamine is one of the favourites to take home the highest individual gong in the sport, Ronaldo said: 'I like to give advice to anyone who wants to listen, but in private, face to face. In my opinion, the Ballon d'Or should be won by those who stand out and win the Champions League. But there is no consensus. I don't believe much in individual awards because I know what is being worked on behind the truth. But the boy (Lamine) has a chance... They are a bit irrelevant because there is not a 100% consensus,' Ronaldo then concluded about such awards.
Ronaldo was also asked about the possibility of playing alongside Messi at Inter Miami or against him. 'You know that I have a lot of affection for Argentina. I have had invitations to play the Club World Cup with [a club from] Argentina. Never say I won't drink this water, but it's very difficult.
"I really like Argentina. I never went and I want to go. I don't have any preferred club. I have a lot of affection for Messi. We have been on stage together for 15 years. I used to translate things from English to Spanish at the galas..,' Ronaldo then trailed off
As things stand, though, Cristiano Ronaldo won't play at the Club World Cup as he confirmed himself. 'It's irrelevant at this point. I prefer to talk about other things. I have had quite a few contacts, but you have to think in the short, medium and long term. I will not go to the Club World Cup, that is a fact,' he stated.

Barcelona star set for €12 million exit

An altogether noteworthy update on the incoming departure of Barcelona starlet Ansu Fati has this weekend surfaced online. This comes amid claims that, contrary to previous speculation, the 22-year-old's summer exit will come with the certainty of bringing a permanent close to his Blaugrana stint. Advertisement Ansu's name has of course proven a prominent one in the headlines across Europe for several weeks now. This comes after AS Monaco opened talks with their Barcelona counterparts, over bringing the winger to Ligue 1 for next season. After Ansu struggled for game-time under the watch of new boss Hansi Flick in Catalunya's capital this past season, Deco and co. quickly opened to the prospect of a sale. Initially, the understanding was that as much would come by way of a loan, featuring an option to buy. As alluded to above, though, if the latest word stemming from the media on Saturday is anything to go by, Monaco's clause at the end of the 2025/26 campaign will in fact come in the form of a permanent one. Advertisement As per a report from Diario AS: 'In principle, Ansu's departure will be via loan with a mandatory purchase option of 12 million euros. There are still some minor details to be resolved because Barcelona want to include a percentage of a future sale or a possible buy-back option.' Conor Laird – GSFN

Turkey rallies to send US men's soccer to third straight defeat

The Americans dropped to 5-4 under Pochettino, who took over after first-round elimination last year's Copa America led the US Soccer Federation to fire coach Gregg Berhalter. They have lost three straight for the second time in a year. Pochettino changed eight starters from the Nations League loss to Canada in March, keeping only left back Max Arfsten, winger Diego Luna and forward Patrick Agyemang. Advertisement Defender Alex Freeman, a 20-year-old son of former NFL All-Pro receiver Antonio Freeman, started in his US debut. Matt Freese, a starter at MLS' New York City FC, made his debut in goal. Matt Turner, the usual starter since 2022, didn't play for Crystal Palace after March 1. McGlynn scored when he ran onto a pass from Malik Tilman, took several touches, cut inside and curled a left-footed shot from just outside the penalty area inside the far post for his second goal in five international appearances. Turkey tied it in the 24th minute when Freese tapped the ball to Johnny Cardoso, whose pass ricocheted off a leg and past Freese for Güler's fifth international goal. Then in the 27th, Miles Robinson tried to clear Oğuz Aydın's shot and the ball went to Aktürkoğlu, who one-timed a bouncing shot past Freese for his 12th international goal and sixth in eight games. Real Madrid star's injury recovery ‘progressing much faster than expected'

Real Madrid star Eduardo Camavinga is recovering from injury at a considerably faster pace than was originally anticipated. That's according to Marca, who have on Saturday provided an insight into the situation. Advertisement Midfielder Camavinga has for his part been sidelined since back in April, owing to a muscular injury. En route to a 1-0 La Liga downing of Getafe, the Frenchman pulled up with a groin concern, which was later confirmed to have brought a premature end to his 2024/25 campaign. The initial assumption was that Camavinga would likely also be ruled out of the upcoming Club World Cup in the USA. If the latest word stemming from the media this weekend is anything to go by, though, then the 22-year-old could yet return to boost the options of new boss Xabi Alonso much sooner than expected. As per Marca: 'The player appears to be progressing much faster than expected. Given what's been seen 11 days before Madrid's campaign for the latest title, Camavinga could be available in time to make a last-minute comeback (at the Club World Cup).' Conor Laird – GSFN
