Turkey rallies to send US men's soccer to third straight defeat
The Americans dropped to 5-4 under Pochettino, who took over after first-round elimination last year's Copa America led the US Soccer Federation to fire coach Gregg Berhalter. They have lost three straight for the second time in a year.
Pochettino changed eight starters from the Nations League loss to Canada in March, keeping only left back Max Arfsten, winger Diego Luna and forward Patrick Agyemang.

McGlynn scored when he ran onto a pass from Malik Tilman, took several touches, cut inside and curled a left-footed shot from just outside the penalty area inside the far post for his second goal in five international appearances.

US coach Mauricio Pochettino says 'We're going to have the possibility to win the World Cup'
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. -- A third straight loss didn't prevent Mauricio Pochettino from thinking big. 'We need to believe. We need to compete like today and for sure we're going to have the possibility to win the World Cup,' the U.S. coach said after the Americans lost their third straight game, wasting an early lead in a 2-1 defeat to Turkey in a friendly on Saturday. Jack McGlynn scored 59 seconds in for the U.S., which was missing many regulars as Pochettino revamped his roster following a dismal performance at the CONCACAF Nations League final four in March. Turkey took advantage of a sloppy defense as Arda Güler and Kerem Aktürkoğlu scored in a 2-minute, 20-second span midway through the first half. While the U.S. had 60% possession and outshot Turkey 13-11, the Americans dropped to 5-4 under Pochettino, who took over after first-round elimination at last year's Copa America led the U.S. Soccer Federation to fire coach Gregg Berhalter. They have lost three straight for the second time in a year. 'Today, who is going to tell me, oh, we showed lack of, we showed lack of — lack of what today?' said Pochettino, a 53-year-old from Argentina who coached Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea. 'The team showed what (it) needed to show. ... Playing in this way, they are going to win most of the games.' Coaching a nation that hasn't reached the World Cup semifinals since 1930 or the quarterfinals since 2022, Pochettino changed eight starters from the Nations League loss to Canada in March and kept only left back Max Arfsten, winger Diego Luna and forward Patrick Agyemang. 'Some guys that are coming in — and they're not thinking twice about taking someone on. It's not playing safe. It's like, let's take risks and try to go after this thing,' said midfielder Tyler Adams, who entered at the start of the second half. 'I think having fresh faces, guys that aren't fearless, young guys, that's going to help us.' With a year to go before co-hosting the World Cup, the U.S. plays Switzerland on Tuesday at Nashville, Tennessee, in another friendly, then opens the CONCACAF Gold Cup against Trinidad and Tobago on June 15. 'I am really sad because I think this group of players are working so hard and I think we deserve (a) better result today,' Pochettino said. 'I think we performed well. I think we're brave enough. I think the attitude was: Go and press, match in every single aspect a team like Turkey that is one of the best teams in the last year in Europe.' Defender Alex Freeman, a 20-year-old son of former NFL All-Pro receiver Antonio Freeman, started in his U.S. debut. Matt Freese, a starter at Major League Soccer's New York City, made his debut in goal. Matt Turner, the usual starter since 2022, didn't play for Crystal Palace after March 1. Midfielder Quinn Sullivan and defender Nathan Harriel made debuts as 65th-minute substitutes. McGlynn scored when he ran onto a pass from Malik Tilman, took several touches, cut inside and curled a left-footed shot from just outside the penalty area inside the far post for his second goal in five international appearances. It was the earliest U.S. goal since Shaq Moore scored 20 seconds in against Canada during the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Turkey tied it in the 24th minute when Freese tapped the ball to Johnny Cardoso, whose pass ricocheted off a leg and past Freese for Güler's fifth international goal. Then in the 27th, Miles Robinson tried to clear Oğuz Aydın's shot and the ball went to Aktürkoğlu, who one-timed a bouncing shot past Freese for his 12th international goal and sixth in eight games. 'Of the goals that we concede, that created a big mess on the team,' Pochettino said.

'Let him grow' - Ronaldo and Yamal to meet on Sunday
Cristiano Ronaldo has been playing in Saudi Arabia since Lamine Yamal has broken into first-team football [Getty Images] "There are different generations, one is coming in and another is exiting the stage. If you want to see me as another generation, then that's OK. "When you talk about a clash between Cristiano and someone else, that's not how it works. The media always try to hype things up, which is a normal thing, but it's one team versus another." Advertisement So says Cristiano Ronaldo (the best player in his 40s in the world) who comes up against Lamine Yamal (the best teenager in the world) in Sunday's Nations League final. Yamal's Spain take on Ronaldo's Portugal in Munich for the trophy - with both players having netted in their semi-final wins. It marks the first time that Barcelona's Yamal, being talked about as a potential Ballon d'Or winner this season, will face five-time winner Ronaldo, who is out of contract at Saudi club Al-Nassr this summer. BBC Sport looks at what Ronaldo and Yamal had to say about each other this week - and how they compare. Advertisement 'I would like to take pressure off him' - what they said Both players were asked about each other in the build-up to this fixture. Ronaldo, 40, said: "This kid has been doing things really well at a club and national team that help him very much. "It's a great atmosphere for him to show his quality. "Let him grow, do not put him under pressure so we can enjoy a talent like this for many years. "I would like to take pressure off him and leave him alone. He's got plenty of talent." Yamal, who turns 18 on 13 July, said: "He's a football legend. I, like all the players, have huge respect for Cristiano. Advertisement "This is the kind of game I want to play, to prove who I am." Yamal far exceeding Ronaldo at this age The start to Yamal's career has been spectacular. This is his final game before he turns 18 and he has already won the European Championship with Spain, and two La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey with Barcelona. He has played 106 times for Barcelona, in that time scoring 25 goals and assisting another 18. For Spain, he has 20 caps, six goals and nine assists. He has netted in the semi-final of a European Championship, Champions League and the Nations League - striking twice in Thursday's 5-4 win over France. He has also scored four El Clasico goals against Real Madrid. Advertisement By the time Ronaldo turned 18, he had five goals and three assists in 19 games for Sporting and had yet to play for Portugal or win a major trophy. Ronaldo was 22 before he won a league title (with Manchester United) and 31 when he won a major international trophy (Euro 2016). But Ronaldo's longevity is unmatched While Yamal has achieved more than Ronaldo as a teenager, he will do well to match the Portugal captain's longevity. At the age of 40, Ronaldo is still prolific for country and club, albeit in the lesser league of Saudi Arabia. He is expected to sign a new deal with Al-Nassr this summer. Advertisement His winner in the Nations League semi-final against Germany was his 137th goal in his 220th cap, both figures records in men's international football. In total, he has 937 career goals, also a record, and is on course to reach 1,000 in two years. His consistency is stunning too, with the 17 goals he scored in 2022-23 for Manchester United and Al-Nassr combined his least prolific season in the past 19 years. By the time Yamal was born, in July 2007, Ronaldo already had 46 caps. He won the Ballon d'Or, the Champions League and became the most expensive footballer of all time (joining Real Madrid from United for £80m) before Yamal started school. Advertisement And his son, Portugal Under-15 international Cristiano Ronaldo Jr, is only three years younger than Yamal.
