'We know summers in Texas are hot, which is why we're focused on delivering meaningful support to our customers and neighbors from the Plains to the Valley,' said Mark Parsons, senior vice president, Reliant. 'Whether someone wants to take control of their energy use with the latest smart home tech or needs a little help paying their bill, we're here to help them stay cool, safe and empowered.'
Statewide Resources to Help Texans Through the Summer
Reliant's summer support programs are designed to address the most urgent needs of Texans during the hottest months of the year. Key initiatives include:
Beat the Heat Cooling Centers: This statewide program has grown to 40 cooling centers across Texas, hosted in partnership with local governments and nonprofits. Reliant is funding and supporting air-conditioned community spaces where residents can escape the heat safely and comfortably. New for 2025, the program is expanding to McAllen and will continue across Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Corpus Christi and Lubbock.
Portable AC Units and Fans: Through its Beat the Heat partnerships, Reliant funds more than 1,200 cooling devices provided to eligible seniors and families across the state without access to adequate air conditioning.
Payment Assistance: Reliant and its parent company NRG Energy, Inc. have committed nearly $1 million in funding to directly support eligible customers struggling to pay their electricity bills through the CARE (Community Assistance by Reliant Energy) program. Texans facing financial hardship can call 2-1-1 within Texas or visit 211texas.org to be connected with local social service agencies for assistance. Reliant's award-winning customer care team – available 24/7 via live phone support at 1-866-222-7100, online chat or on the Reliant app – can also help customers learn more about other assistance options, including extensions or deferred payment plans.

Smart Solutions for Texans Looking to Take Control
While many Texans need immediate relief, others are looking for long-term ways to manage their energy use and reduce costs. To meet this need, Reliant has introduced the Smarter Home Bundle, a new offering along with partner Vivint that helps qualifying new and current customers simplify their home management and take control of their energy usage with two FREE smart devices and complimentary white-glove installation.
Features include:
An award-winning Vivint Smart Thermostat that integrates directly with cooling and heating systems to help keep homes comfortable while conserving energy.
A Vivint Doorbell Camera Pro with Smart Deter to detect deliveries and help prevent theft and lurkers.
Professional installation to ensure everything is perfectly set up from day one.
Access to an exclusive Vivint app experience that provides personalized energy insights powered by Reliant alongside seamless control of Vivint smart home devices.
In addition to helping customers lower their bills, these tools also support the broader Texas energy grid. The bundle includes enrollment in Reliant's demand response program, Degrees of Difference, that helps customers make small, temporary adjustments during periods of high electricity demand. It's important to note that customers are always in control and can change the temperature at any point, manually or in the Vivint app.
'Texas is diverse, and Reliant recognizes that no two customers are the same,' said Parsons. 'Whether someone needs a cool place to rest, tools to make their home more efficient or financial relief, Reliant is ready to help this summer.'

Data Centers Can Accelerate Maryland's Job Growth and Bridge State's Budget Gap

ROCKVILLE, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As Maryland navigates a changing fiscal and economic landscape, a new Maryland Tech Council report finds that data centers offer Maryland a rare opportunity to expand its tax base, create high-paying jobs, and lead in the digital economy—without raising taxes or straining public services. Study finds that a typical data center project in Maryland, approximately 800,000 sq. ft., supports 5,000 direct and indirect jobs and $775 million in economic activity and generates approximately $18 million in tax revenues during construction. The study finds that a typical data center project in Maryland, approximately 800,000 sq. ft., supports 5,000 direct and indirect jobs and $775 million in economic activity and generates approximately $18 million in tax revenues during construction. Once operational, the same data center will support nearly 500 permanent jobs and generate $14 million in state tax revenue annually. 'As Maryland adapts to new challenges to its economy and tax base, we need to support industries that can create tens of thousands of high-paying jobs and significantly bolster tax revenues,' said Kelly Schulz, Chief Executive Officer of the Maryland Tech Council. 'The data center industry does exactly that, without the need for tax increases. By creating and executing a strategic plan for data center development, Maryland can meaningfully address its structural budget challenge, put more Marylanders to work in good-paying jobs, and build the digital infrastructure required to remain an American technological leader." MTC's report, prepared by Sage Policy Group, comes at a critical moment for Maryland. The state ranks 40 th in the U.S. in five-year job growth and is projecting a $3 billion budget deficit by Fiscal Year 2030. Meanwhile, the U.S. technology industry is expected to invest upwards of $500 billion to build out AI and data center infrastructure by 2030, presenting Maryland with a clear opportunity to strengthen its economic and fiscal position by supporting the data center industry. A summary of the report's key findings follows: Economic Impacts Construction Revival: Every 275 square feet of data center supports one construction job, providing a critical boost for a sector that has lost 13,000 jobs since 2019. High-Quality Employment: Data center employees earn nearly $100,000 in annual pay, 55% above the statewide average. Multiplier Effect: Each direct data center job creates more than two additional jobs across Maryland's economy. Fiscal Benefits Major Revenue Generation: One million square feet of operational data center space produces over $16 million in annual state revenue. Minimal Service Requirements: Data centers place minimal demands on government services, maximizing their net fiscal impact. Construction Phase Windfall: Each square foot of data center construction generations approximately $10 in sales tax revenue. Local Tax Impact: A 2023 Sage study of a potential 16 million square foot development in Frederick County estimated more than $40 million in annual tax revenue to the county. Environmental Advantages A Clean Energy Advantage: Maryland produces between 6% and 71% fewer carbon emissions per megawatt hour of energy compared to neighboring states. Controlling Environmental Outcomes: Hosting energy-intensive facilities in Maryland ensures lower emissions and better environmental outcomes than if built elsewhere in the region. Public Sentiment Tax Resistance: A majority of Marylanders oppose tax increases: 77% are against property tax hikes, 76% oppose income tax increases, and 73% are against raising sales taxes. Data centers can bring revenue to state and county governments without raising taxes. Congressman Morgan Luttrell Tours Hertha Metals' Texas Plant Driving U.S. Steel and Iron Independence

CONROE, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- On August 11th, CEO Laureen Meroueh and Hertha Metals – a domestic steel and high-purity iron producing company based out of Conroe – hosted Congressman Morgan Luttrell for a tour of Hertha Metals' plant. During the tour, Congressman Luttrell saw Hertha's one-step furnace in action: turning low-grade domestic ore and millscale into high-purity iron for rare earth magnets used in defense, energy, and electronics. The visit also spotlighted Hertha's upcoming 9,000-tonne-per-year plant, set to bring 550 jobs and strengthen America's industrial security. 'Hertha Metals is changing that and meeting the moment by creating a 9,000 tonne per year plant in Conroe with enough capacity to meet the country's demand in the rare earth magnet market."- Congressman Morgan Luttrell (R-TX) Share 'It was an honor to welcome Congressman Morgan Luttrell to our Conroe plant,' said Laureen Meroueh, CEO of Hertha Metals. 'By producing high-purity iron domestically, we're reducing America's reliance on foreign supply chains for materials critical to defense, energy, and advanced manufacturing – all while creating more than 550 jobs and making Conroe a cornerstone of America's industrial future.' 'The United States is the world's largest steel importer yet has no domestic source of high-purity iron. China exports over 90 percent of the high-purity iron in rare earth magnets – a reliance that poses a direct threat to America's industrial and national security,' said Congressman Morgan Luttrell (R-TX). 'Hertha Metals is changing that and meeting the moment by creating a 9,000 tonne per year plant in Conroe with enough capacity to meet the country's demand in the rare earth magnet market. I'm proud that this new high purity iron production plant will generate over 500 jobs in my district.' More Background: Hertha Metals is revitalizing American-made high-purity iron and steel manufacturing through innovation. By leveraging abundant U.S. natural gas and domestic iron ore, Hertha developed a next-generation steelmaking process that delivers high-purity iron, as well as high performance steel, using our country's abundant resources. By 2030, Hertha Metals will scale steel production to 500,000 tonnes annually, a commercial steel micro mill. To learn more, visit
