This isn't your average college football ranking.
My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list:
Who do I think is good?
Why do I think they're good?
What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations?
Here is a look at where Texas Tech lands in my Ultimate 136.

Top player: Edge David Bailey: Spent three seasons at Stanford, most notably recording 7 sacks and 5 forced fumbles; his 5 forced fumbles ranked fourth in FBS, and his 93.2 PFF pass rush grade led all players in FBS.

RJ's take: After watching Arizona State go from 3-9 to Big 12 champion and CFP selectee, Texas Tech is right to think, "Why not us?"
Despite leading the Big 12 in points per game (37.8) and yards per game (462.8), Tech finished 8-5 in 2024. It has decided to go for broke to win the league in 2025.
Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders reportedly spent $10 million in NIL money to acquire 17 players during the winter transfer window with an emphasis on front-loading contracts in anticipation of the House v. NCAA settlement that would cap earnings for players.

The result was adding former USC running back Quinten Joyner and former Houston tackle Howard Sampson, who stands 6-foot-8, 325 pounds, among others, in a push to win the Big 12 Championship in 2025 to properly christen its new $242 million Womble Football Center.
The gambit isn't new. Ole Miss tried it and failed. But with billionaires behind the money, like Cody Campbell, it's a bet worth placing for a program in Lubbock that wants to become as successful as its most successful former player in Patrick Mahomes and become known for winning championships. Though coordinators Mack Leftwich and Shiel Wood are new to the Red Raiders, 13 players are set to return as starters. The 13 transfers McGuire brought in include former Stanford edge David Bailey, who reportedly signed a $2 million deal to play in Lubbock, Texas.

2025 Big 12 betting preview, odds: Favorite over/unders, Heisman pick and projections for every team
Another year, another wide-open Big 12. If last season taught us anything, it's that this league thrives on unpredictability. Arizona State, picked dead last in the preseason media poll, shocked everyone by winning the Big 12 title and nearly toppling Texas in the College Football Playoff. Meanwhile, four teams finished with seven conference wins, and Iowa State, Colorado and BYU all stayed in the hunt until mid November. Heading into 2025, don't expect the chaos to slow down. This is a league built on parity, emerging quarterback talent and razor-thin margins. Every Saturday feels like a coin flip, but a few contenders — and some juicy betting angles — stand out. Big 12 winner: Kansas State (+600 at BetMGM) Kansas State looks like the team to beat in 2025. Junior quarterback Avery Johnson, the dynamic dual-threat who flashed Heisman potential before injuries derailed his 2024 season, returns to lead an offense that can stretch the field vertically and stress defenses horizontally. The Wildcats' receiving corps is loaded with size and speed, including multiple wideouts over 6-foot-4 and a track star tight end who once set the 110-meter hurdles record. Combine that with a disciplined defense and one of the Big 12's friendlier schedules, and Chris Klieman's team has the makeup of a champion. If Johnson stays healthy, Kansas State isn't just a conference favorite, it has a realistic path to the 12-team College Football Playoff. Sleeper pick: BYU (20-1) Don't write off the Cougars just yet. BYU's offseason headlines centered around the loss of starting QB Jake Retzlaff under less-than-ideal circumstances, and the betting market has largely dismissed its 2025 chances. However, this roster is far from a rebuild. The Cougars boast one of the Big 12's top skill groups, with versatile playmakers in the flats and backs who can pick up tough yardage. A three-way quarterback battle in fall camp could actually be a blessing — competition tends to accelerate development, and BYU should find a functional starter quickly. I project the Cougars at 8.05 wins, third most in the conference. At 20-1 odds, there's sneaky value on BYU making noise in the title race. Kansas under 7.5 wins (-158) Projected wins: 6.37 The Jayhawks are once again fun on paper with Jalon Daniels back under center. But his availability is the elephant in the room. Daniels has elite flashes when healthy but has struggled to stay on the field, and the backup situation is thin — a major red flag for a team living on QB production. Factor in a tricky schedule, and any Daniels injury could sink the season. At 7.5, the under is the safer play. Colorado over 5.5 wins (-120) Projected wins: 6.23 The Buffs' offseason narrative was dominated by concerns over Deion Sanders' health and the departures of stars Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders. But I think the market may have overcorrected. Colorado still has top-end talent and a friendlier schedule than last season. With the media circus dimmer and expectations reset, buying the dip at 5.5 wins is a sharp play. Heisman value: Avery Johnson, QB, Kansas State (50-1) Johnson flirted with Heisman buzz early last season, reaching odds as high as 20-1 before injuries stalled his campaign. His skill set is made for highlight reels: 4.5 speed, a 37-inch vertical and explosive dual-threat ability. With a clean bill of health and new offensive coordinator Matt Wells dialing up tempo and spacing, Johnson is positioned to post video-game numbers. Kansas State opens with a nationally televised matchup against Iowa State — one or two early 'wow' plays from Johnson and those 50-1 odds will vanish fast. Conference overview The Big 12 heads into 2025 with as many storylines as it has question marks. Kansas State has the headliner: Johnson, a dynamic dual-threat quarterback who sits near the top of early Heisman boards. Arizona State is itching to prove last year's surge wasn't a one-year wonder, while BYU enters the season with a new quarterback, and Texas Tech leans into its reputation as 'the best team money can buy.' And in Morgantown, West Virginia's reunion with Rich Rodriguez could inject one of the nation's fastest tempos into the league. Top to bottom, the Big 12 might not have a playoff lock, but it does have chaos potential — and in this conference, that usually means an entertaining season is coming. Willie Lampkin looks like an undrafted gem for the Rams after just one preseason game
Lampkin was dominant in his NFL debut, showing that he can make it as a pro despite being 5-10 and 270 pounds NFL offensive linemen don't look like Willie Lampkin. While there's no record of the smallest lineman in league history, Lampkin might take that title if he makes the Los Angeles Rams' 53-man roster. At the Senior Bowl, he measured in at 5-foot-10 3/8 and 270 pounds. No other lineman at the Senior Bowl was shorter than 6-foot-3 or lighter than 307 pounds. He wasn't invited to the NFL combine, but he would've been the shortest lineman there by 5 inches and the lightest by 29 pounds. Players with his frame are rare in college and they're almost non-existent in the NFL, but he's out to prove size doesn't matter. It took him just one preseason game to make a name for himself as a potential undrafted gem for the Rams. He was dominant against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday, earning a PFF grade of 94.1. That was the second-highest among all NFL linemen who played at least 20 snaps in Week 1 of the preseason. His run-blocking grade was outstanding, coming in at 92.2 – fourth-highest among all linemen. Lampkin didn't get many opportunities in pass protection, only seeing nine snaps on passing plays, but he didn't allow a single pressure and earned a respectable 78.6 grade. His film was excellent, too. While he's obviously on the smaller side, it doesn't show when he's blocking bigger defensive linemen. He's powerful enough to move them aside and create running lanes, while also having a strong enough base to not get walked back in pass protection. Just look at the work he did as a run blocker on these plays shared by Brandon Thorn, an offensive line expert. Lampkin put Cowboys defenders on their backs, opening up big holes for his running backs. There weren't any real concerns about Lampkins ability to sustain blocks and protect the quarterback in college. In five years at the FBS level, he allowed just three total sacks, none in his last two years when he was at North Carolina. If he were 6-foot-2 and 320 pounds, he'd likely have been a first- or second-round pick. But at 5-11 and 270 pounds, teams were scared off. Size is what caused him to fall all the way out of the draft and go undrafted, which allowed the Rams to sign him to a rookie deal. Sean McVay loved what he saw from the first-year center in his preseason debut, noting his natural leverage as a smaller center. 'I thought he did a nice job,' McVay said. 'Obviously, he has great leverage, can get underneath people and be able to finish. That was what you loved about him at North Carolina. but just a competitor. He's tough, he's physical. He understands how to be able to play to his strengths and I think he's done a really good job and I thought a lot of those guys did a nice job, but I was pleased with Willie.' Lampkin passed the test at the Senior Bowl where he was one of the best linemen in Mobile. He seemed to perform well in training camp, and in his preseason debut, he passed another test against NFL competition. Now, the question is whether he'll earn a spot on the Rams' 53-man roster. Beaux Limmer is a lock to make the team as a backup center and guard, and Justin Dedich seems to be trending that way, too. But there's room for Lampkin. And even if the Rams don't feel that way right now, they need to make room for him. Russell Wilson silenced doubters who called him too small to play quarterback in the NFL, and Lampkin could do the same as an undersized center. He has the power and anchor to win against NFL-size defensive linemen, even if it was only against backups in the preseason opener. Hopefully he'll get a chance to block some starters against the Chargers and Browns in the coming weeks, which will be the final test on his way to a roster spot. Check that box and he'll likely have a future in the NFL.
