Lokesh vows support to weavers

Hans India08-08-2025
Mangalagiri: Underscoring the government's commitment to uplift traditional artisans, minister for education, IT, and electronics Nara Lokesh said the state is actively working to enhance the livelihoods of weavers, with a clear goal of doubling their income in the coming years.
Speaking at the 11th National Handloom Day celebrations held at the Weaver's Hall in Autonagar, Mangalagiri, Lokesh pointed to a slew of initiatives taken to support the handloom community — ranging from the distribution of 873 spinning wheels during his time in opposition to collaborations with companies like Tata Tanera that have already helped increase weavers' earnings by 30 per cent. He also recalled the support extended to weavers during the Covid-19 pandemic, including access to medicines and oxygen cylinders.
Addressing the gathering with the spirited slogan 'Jai Chenetha', Lokesh hailed the skill and dedication of weavers, referring to them as 'handloom artists' who bring designs to life from dyed thread to finished fabric. He emphasised the government's ongoing commitment to strengthening their welfare through infrastructure, innovation, and institutional partnerships.
The minister also pointed to support extended to other artisanal communities, citing the Lakshmi Narasimha Swarnakara Welfare Association's initiatives to provide goldsmiths with health insurance and financial assistance.
Lokesh announced the appointment of key Padmashali leaders from Mangalagiri to significant positions, Nandam Abaddiah as Chairman of the Padmashali Corporation, T Janaki Devi to the TTD Board, and Chillapalli Srinivas Rao as chairman of APSMIDC.
Calling for a greater recognition of the community's history, Lokesh urged Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to declare the birth anniversary of renowned weavers' leader Pragada Kotaiah as an official government celebration. He further announced that a park being developed over six acres in Tidco Housing would be named after Kotaiah and feature his statue.
Lokesh, who won from Mangalagiri with a massive margin of 91,413 votes in the 2024 elections, credited this mandate for the emergence of a 'triple engine' governance model—Prime Minister Modi at the Centre, Chandrababu Naidu in the state, and himself serving locally.
As a symbolic tribute to the state's rich textile heritage, Lokesh presented Chief Minister Naidu with a map of Andhra Pradesh crafted using silk and cotton threads from various weaving hubs across the state.
The event was also attended by BC welfare, handlooms and textiles minister S Savitha, handlooms and handicrafts honorary advisor Suchitra Ella, MLC chief whip Panchumarthi Anuradha, TTD member T Janaki Devi, and other dignitaries.

New deadline for Curchorem Ravindra Bhavan

Margao: The much-anticipated phase II extension of Ravindra Bhavan in Curchorem is likely to be completed by Sep 31, the latest timeline set by the department of art and culture for completing all pending works. Official records reveal that while the amphitheatre and mini auditorium are structurally complete, interior works remain pending, preventing their immediate use. The project was plagued by multiple setbacks, including the Covid-19 pandemic's impact on manpower and material supply, design changes to the tensile fabric roof system for better structural stability, and contractor-related issues. Most significantly, the interior and allied works contractor was terminated in Dec 2023 due to poor performance, necessitating a fresh tendering process. Financial data reveals that the project's total cost escalated to Rs 27 crore, with Rs 24 crore already disbursed to contractors. The main civil, electrical, and firefighting works component, valued at Rs 20 crore, is 95% complete. However, interior works, originally worth over Rs 20 crore, remain only 50% finished under the new contractor arrangement. The audio-video systems installation is significantly behind schedule at just 30% completion, and doubts persist over its completion before the Sep 31 deadline. Notably, while major infrastructure components like CCTV systems and electrical metering are fully completed, the project's core entertainment facilities remain incomplete. The Rs 1.2 crore audio-video component has seen only Rs 75 lakh in payments, indicating substantial pending work that could further delay the project's operational readiness. The Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation is overseeing the project through appointed project management consultants. Take steps to ease tariff pain of exporters, CM urges PM

Chennai: In the wake of the US imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, chief minister M K Stalin urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to introduce special financial relief measures for exporters. In a letter to Modi, Stalin said, "To provide immediate relief, Union govt needs to consider introducing a special interest subvention scheme for all exporters affected by tariffs to improve liquidity and reduce cost burdens and accelerate Free Trade Agreements and bilateral arrangements to offset high-tariff market risks." Considering the scale of the problem, a special financial relief package including a moratorium on principal repayment, similar to the one implemented during COVID is necessary to support exporters, Stalin said. "This higher dependency on the US market clearly implies that tariff impact on TN will be disproportionately greater than for most other Indian states," Stalin said. TN accounted for 28% of India's textile exports in 2024-2025, the largest contributor among all Indian states, he said. "Especially, our textile sector employs nearly 75 lakh people and with aproposed 50% tariff, an estimated 30 lakh jobs are at immediate risk. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo To mitigate this crisis, it is essential to address structural issues that have long hindered our export competitiveness," he added. Meghalaya only state in country to achieve consistent growth rate of about 10% over 3 consecutive yrs post Covid: CM

Shillong: Meghalaya 'stands tall as the second fastest-growing state' in the country, just after Tamil Nadu, and the growth rate for 2024-25 at constant prices is 9.66%, which is double the state's growth rate of 5.1% in 2018 when the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance Govt came to power, CM Conrad K Sangma said in the course of his eighth consecutive Independence Day speech at the Polo Grounds here on Friday. "Meghalaya is the only state in the country which has achieved a consistent growth rate of about 10% over three consecutive years post the Covid pandemic. How did Meghalaya transform from a state growing at 5% to a state growing at 10%? Meghalaya's growth rate in 2015-16 was 2%, 2016-17 was 5%, 2017-18 was 4%, 2018-19 was 5%, and 2019-20 was 5%. In contrast, the growth rates in 2022-23 were 10%, 2023-24 was 11%, and 2024-25 is 10%. This achievement is the result of years of persistence, careful planning, and the hard work of the Govt," said the CM, who also holds the finance portfolio. He said after spending four days in Meghalaya last month, meeting farmers, youth, entrepreneurs, women, and community members, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman described the state as a "shining example of a confident and self-reliant India". The CM also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had recently recognised Meghalaya's development model, describing it as a "blueprint for an Aatmanirbhar Bharat ". The CM said similar sentiments were echoed by the chairman of 16th Finance Commission, development partners from World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and leaders from the private sector. "We are at a midway point in the 15-year journey, from 2018 to 2032, when we commemorate 60 years of Meghalaya's statehood. In 2018, our GDP was less than Rs. 30,000 crore. In seven and a half years, we have doubled the GDP to Rs 59,626 crore. In the next seven and a half years, we will more than double our GDP from the current Rs 60,000 crore to Rs 1,40,000 crore. This increased GDP will lead to more jobs for our youth, more opportunities for every citizen, and make Meghalaya one of the top 10 states in the country," the CM said.
