Three Lions must show more fight against Senegal

Metro12 hours ago

Let's get this out of the way as quickly as possible, there's no point in drawing it out and extending the agony. England were shocking against Andorra and if it continues the knives will soon be out for manager Thomas Tuchel.
The 1-0 win in the World Cup qualifier in Barcelona was a dismal performance and, apart from Harry Kane's second-half winner, the best part of the match was the final whistle.
To be fair, players stretched physically and mentally to their limits by increasingly long seasons and some being distracted by the imminent Fifa Club World Cup isn't helping matters as the beautiful game embarks on another chase for big dollars.
That can't be used as an excuse to let the Three Lions off the hook, though, as they struggled to beat one of the worst teams in international football.
England were jeered off the pitch at half-time after failing to score against the team ranked 173rd in the world and continued to struggle to create meaningful chances after Kane finally broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, receiving more boos at the end.
They are top Group K with a maximum return from their first three games against poor opposition but matches like this underwhelming affair do little to spark enthusiasm for the international breaks which will litter the early months of the next Premier League season.
There is also little to whet the appetite for Tuesday's friendly with Senegal at Nottingham Forest's City Ground and Tuchel will be scrutinising his players to see who is up for the challenge and ready to give everything even when the stakes are not at their highest.
The former Chelsea boss wasn't slow to criticise his team as a whole against Andorra, admitting he disliked their 'lack of urgency', adding they 'lacked the 'seriousness' required for the occasion so an improvement in attitude should be clear for all to see against the Lions of Teranga, who drew 1-1 with Ireland in Dublin on Friday.
At least that was an entertaining encounter, raising the prospect of more of the same against England and hopefully the hosts raise their standards and emerge 3-1 winners at 10/1 with William Hill, bet365 and Betfred.
Kane is 10/3 with Hills to provide the first goal and 10/11 with the same firm, Ladbrokes and Coral to hit the net at any time while Eberechi Eze is 27/10 with the big three bookies to also get in the scoresheet. More Trending
More realistically, it will be another drab affair and under 2.5 goals can be a decent saver at 13/10 with bet365.
Wales dominated in their 3-0 win against Lichtenstein in Friday's World Cup qualifier in Cardiff but face a much more demanding challenge against Belgium.
Harry Wilson is 13/2 with Paddy Power and Sky Bet to score his sixth goal in eight internationals for Wales but Youri Tielemans is 5/1 with the same firms to find the net at any time and a 2-1 win for Belgium is 15/2 with bet365, Betfred and BoyleSports.
• Coco Gauff is 8/1 with Ladbrokes and Coral to win Wimbledon and claim her third grand slam title following Saturday's French Open triumph against Aryna Sabalenka.

WSL revenues soar 34% despite drop in attendances

Revenues for Women's Super League (WSL) clubs soared by 34% during a record-breaking 2023-24 season, despite a drop in 12 teams in the WSL amassed a combined revenue of £65m, with each club generating more than £1m for the first from the Deloitte Sports Business Group found revenues grew from £48m in the 2022-23 season to £65m the following increase was driven by growth in commercial revenue, which increased by 53% from the previous season and now accounts for 40% of WSL clubs' total revenue. The revenue increases were largely driven by four clubs, with Arsenal (£15.3m), Chelsea (£11.5m), Manchester United (£9.2m) and Manchester City (£6.6m) accounting for two-thirds of the money made across the league. Matchday revenue increased, despite a 10% drop in attendances from the previous average league attendance dropped to 6,642. The drop, which followed England reaching the 2023 Women's World Cup final, contributed to pre-tax losses of £28m - up from £21m in 2022-23. However, Deloitte is forecasting revenues to top £100m across the league at the end of the 2025-26 campaign, helped by the upcoming Euros in Switzerland, "Women's football in England is evolving rapidly," said Tim Bridge, lead partner in the Deloitte Sports Business Group."While challenges remain, it is clear there is potential for a passionate and engaged fanbase to drive the game's development."Capitalising on major international tournaments is important at specific points in time, but sustainable growth hinges on the domestic league's organic development."Bridge added that a "competitive balance is a key priority" if the WSL is to sustain long-term growth, with the gap widening between the top-earning clubs and the lowest-earning clubs in the league. Premier League clubs in the race to sign Newcastle duo with Magpies set for overhaul after securing Champions League qualification

Two Newcastle midfielders could be on their way out of St James' Park this summer amid interest from Premier League sides. The Magpies secured Champions League qualification on the final day of the Premier League season and will be keen to bolster their squad after struggling to deal with the demands of domestic and European football during the 2023-24 campaign. Having failed to break into Eddie Howe 's settled starting side, several first team stars are expected to depart the club this summer. Among them include the likes of Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock, who started eight and 11 matches in the Premier League respectively. Newly promoted side Leeds United are showing interest in Longstaff, who failed to register a goal or an assist in his 25 appearances in the top flight. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace are among the clubs keen on Willock, who fared slightly better with two assists in his 32 outings. Elsewhere, Leeds also admire Shea Charles of Southampton and have asked about Udinese defender Jaka Bijol. Charles made 44 appearances on loan in the Championship with Sheffield Wednesday and has earned three senior international caps for Northern Ireland.

Chelsea to make improved offer for Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens after £29.5m bid was rejected

Chelsea are to make an improved offer for Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens after their opening £29.5m bid was rejected. Dortmund want somewhere in the region of £40m for the former Manchester City youth prospect. The Blues are hoping to sign him before Tuesday's deadline to play in the Club World Cup and are prepared to offer a seven-year contract. City hold a 10 per cent sell-on clause for the 20-year-old, who left the club's academy in 2020 for Dortmund. Gittens, who also had brief spells at Chelsea and Reading as a youngster, made his senior debut in the Bundesliga days after his 18th birthday. He has racked up 106 appearances since, scoring 17 goals. Although, his breakout campaign came this past season, over the course of which he scored 12 goals and provided three assists in 48 games. Chelsea have also offered £12.6m for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Meanwile, Arsenal are finalising the £5m signing of Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga. Chelsea are interested in a number of defensive options, including Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi. As well as Guehi, Chelsea remain keen on Jorrel Hato of Ajax. The highly rated centre-back made his senior debut at just 16 years old and became an undisputed starter for the Eredivisie side last season. Now 19, Hato has been appointed as one of Ajax's vice-captains, and was named Eredivisie Talent of the Year in 2024-25.
