MCMC to review big gap in 5G coverage among telcos across Malaysia, says Fahmi

Malay Mail17-05-2025

CYBERJAYA, May 17 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will examine the disparity in 5G Coverage of Populated Areas (CoPA) among telecommunications companies (telcos) in different locations, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
He said that although Malaysia has achieved an overall 92 per cent 5G CoPA nationwide, coverage levels vary significantly between telcos.
'Some telcos have CoPA as low as 76 per cent, while others go up to 86 per cent,' he told reporters after officiating the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2025 celebration here today.
Fahmi said he had instructed MCMC to provide detailed reports showing both the national aggregate and individual telco CoPA, broken down by state.
'We want to make sure that when Malaysians pay for Internet packages, they receive coverage across the country - not just in selected areas. We're paying for nationwide access,' he said.
Fahmi stressed that 5G services must be available throughout Malaysia, and that the government had been actively working to enhance network-sharing among telcos.
'I've worked hard to get all telcos to participate in network sharing, and we formalised this through a recently published framework,' he said.
On another development, Fahmi said the soon-to-be-enforced Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024 would play a crucial role in holding social media platforms accountable for the content they host, particularly in protecting users from scams and online harm.
He emphasised that OnSA would compel platforms to share the responsibility of ensuring a safer digital environment.
'One of the key objectives is to make sure that social media platforms are responsible for the kind of content available on their platforms,' he said.
Fahmi also raised concern over the lack of action by major platforms, especially Facebook, in tackling scam and gambling advertisements, despite these being paid content.
'For example, there are many scam and gambling ads, yet Facebook hasn't done enough to remove them - simply because scammers are paying for them,' he said.
'As such, we're waiting for the Online Safety Act to receive royal assent, and once it comes into effect, we believe that the OnSA will play a pivotal role,' he added.
Passed by Parliament in December last year, the OnSA will require social media platform providers to meet three core responsibilities: ensuring platform safety, protecting children under the age of 13, and limiting access to harmful content.
Platforms will also be required to issue clear user guidelines, including terms of use, and provide mechanisms for users to report harmful or offensive content. — Bernama

No need to audit Petronas, Umno Youth told

Zaid Ibrahim told Umno Youth that conducting a financial audit of Petronas is unnecessary and will only divert attention from more critical matters affecting the national oil company. PETALING JAYA : Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has dismissed calls by Umno Youth for the government to audit Petronas's financial results, urging the wing instead to concentrate on more pressing issues affecting the national oil company and the country's long-term energy strategy. Zaid said unless there is a clear and specific concern that justifies an audit, such a move is unnecessary and risks diverting attention from more critical matters. 'What you should be worried about is this: were you told about the deal struck between the Madani government and Sarawak on the Petronas-Petros dispute? 'Was the settlement fair to Petronas, and was it made in the (nation's best) interest?' he said in a post on X. Zaid also questioned the government's continued reliance on Petronas for national revenue, warning that it may be draining the company to the point where it can no longer compete effectively in the global energy market. 'You (Umno Youth) should be asking whether the government has a serious plan to diversify its revenue sources beyond Petronas.' He also raised concerns about whether Petronas still attracts leaders with the strategic foresight and competence of past technocrats such as Idris Jala and Hassan Marican, or even former prime minister Najib Razak, who once served the company as a junior executive. Umno Youth yesterday called on the government to provide a full audit and transparent report on Petronas's actual financial position to the public after its decision to cut 10% of its workforce due to falling crude prices. Its chief, Dr Akmal Saleh, said that as a wholly government-owned entity, any drastic decision affecting thousands of employees should not be made without proper checks and balances. Petronas said at least 5,000 staff (mostly contract workers) would be affected by the move.

Published on: Sunday, June 08, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 08, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. KUALA LUMPUR: Telecommunication companies (telcos) have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting customer data and privacy, following the use of mobile phone data (MPD) for official statistical purposes by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). U Mobile Sdn Bhd affirmed in a statement today that customer data and privacy are its top priority, with policies and processes in place to ensure any shared data is anonymised, aggregated and fully compliant with applicable data protection laws and regulations. Advertisement 'We are aware of the objectives of the initiative and are committed to working with MCMC in a manner that upholds the highest standards of data governance,' it said. It noted that when the company does share the MPD, at no point will personally identifiable information be shared or processed. U Mobile remains committed to safeguarding customer privacy and ensuring full regulatory compliance in all aspects of data management, it added. Meanwhile, Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) also clarified that the MPD submitted to MCMC is fully anonymised and does not contain any personally identifiable information. Advertisement Data submission is carried out under strict governance and security protocols, with full compliance to applicable company policies as well as national laws and regulatory requirements, it said in a statement. 'TM remains fully committed to safeguarding the safety and privacy of customer data with responsibility and integrity,' it noted. CelcomDigi Bhd said in a statement that it continues to work intently with MCMC to support the government's initiatives without compromising the integrity of customer data. 'When required, CelcomDigi will process requested data within our own secure environments and provide a limited sample on relevant fields comprising anonymised and aggregated output to the commission,' it said. YTL Communications Sdn Bhd also confirms compliance with MCMC's directive to submit mobile network usage records for the first quarter of 2025, in support of the government's recently approved mandate to use MPD for national statistics. 'In fulfilling this obligation, YTL Communications has taken rigorous steps to anonymise all data prior to submission. No personally identifiable information has been shared, and customer privacy remains our highest priority,' it noted in a statement. Maxis Bhd said that for this initiative, as requested by MCMC, there is no access to, processing of, or sharing of personally identifiable information at any stage, as the company places the priority on data privacy and security. 'All data is anonymised by Maxis and processed in an aggregated manner within a secure environment, in full compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA),' it said in a statement. On June 6, MCMC clarified that its collection of MPD from mobile network operators (MNOs) does not involve the access, processing or disclosure of any personally identifiable information. MCMC said MPD was used strictly for the generation of official statistics to support evidence-based policymaking in two key domains, namely the information and communications technology sector and the tourism sector. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Halal Industry Among Key Growth Drivers In IMT-GT, BIMP-EAGA

By Engku Shariful Azni Engku Ab Latif and Nur Athirah Mohd Shaharuddin KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 (Bernama) – The rapidly-growing halal industry is among nine sectors that can trigger high economic growth in the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) and the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). The other key sectors include sustainable agriculture and agribusiness; tourism; green and renewable energy (RE); the digital economy; transport and logistics; palm oil and downstream industries; and Islamic finance, according to International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) associate professor of economics, Dr Muhammad Irwan Ariffin. The marine and fisheries industries are exclusive to the BIMP-EAGA sub-region, he noted. He said the halal industry in both IMT-GT and BIMP-EAGA sub-regions holds strong global demand for halal food, cosmetics, finance and tourism. "It shares Islamic values across Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, southern Thailand and Mindanao, making it a strategic goal to develop IMT-GT as a global halal hub," he told Bernama. Turning to the agricultural sector, Muhammad Irwan said the combination of vast arable land and a tropical climate drives strong demand for high-value crops, organic farming, agro-processing and agribusiness value chains, which are essential for supporting rural economies. As for the digital economy, he said increasing internet access in rural areas across the sub-regions has driven the growth of e-commerce, fintech and digital skills development, alongside plans for smart cities and cross-border digital corridors. "The sub-regions, which are known for their rich biodiversity, natural parks, and cultural heritage, are increasingly focusing on eco-tourism, halal tourism, and cross-border travel circuits, supported by strategic initiatives such as the Visit IMT-GT Year 2023–2025 campaign,' he continued. "In the Islamic finance sector, the large Muslim population and underserved rural communities present opportunities for inclusive growth through shariah-compliant financial services that support the development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across the regions."
