MCMC to review big gap in 5G coverage among telcos across Malaysia, says Fahmi

Malay Mail17-05-2025
CYBERJAYA, May 17 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will examine the disparity in 5G Coverage of Populated Areas (CoPA) among telecommunications companies (telcos) in different locations, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
He said that although Malaysia has achieved an overall 92 per cent 5G CoPA nationwide, coverage levels vary significantly between telcos.
'Some telcos have CoPA as low as 76 per cent, while others go up to 86 per cent,' he told reporters after officiating the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2025 celebration here today.
Fahmi said he had instructed MCMC to provide detailed reports showing both the national aggregate and individual telco CoPA, broken down by state.
'We want to make sure that when Malaysians pay for Internet packages, they receive coverage across the country - not just in selected areas. We're paying for nationwide access,' he said.
Fahmi stressed that 5G services must be available throughout Malaysia, and that the government had been actively working to enhance network-sharing among telcos.
'I've worked hard to get all telcos to participate in network sharing, and we formalised this through a recently published framework,' he said.
On another development, Fahmi said the soon-to-be-enforced Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024 would play a crucial role in holding social media platforms accountable for the content they host, particularly in protecting users from scams and online harm.
He emphasised that OnSA would compel platforms to share the responsibility of ensuring a safer digital environment.
'One of the key objectives is to make sure that social media platforms are responsible for the kind of content available on their platforms,' he said.
Fahmi also raised concern over the lack of action by major platforms, especially Facebook, in tackling scam and gambling advertisements, despite these being paid content.
'For example, there are many scam and gambling ads, yet Facebook hasn't done enough to remove them - simply because scammers are paying for them,' he said.
'As such, we're waiting for the Online Safety Act to receive royal assent, and once it comes into effect, we believe that the OnSA will play a pivotal role,' he added.
Passed by Parliament in December last year, the OnSA will require social media platform providers to meet three core responsibilities: ensuring platform safety, protecting children under the age of 13, and limiting access to harmful content.
Platforms will also be required to issue clear user guidelines, including terms of use, and provide mechanisms for users to report harmful or offensive content. — Bernama

Fahmi proposes priority housing for long-time Kg Kerinchi residents

KUALA LUMPUR: Residents of Kampung Kerinchi whose families have lived there for generations should be given priority to buy houses built within the area. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said he had proposed to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) that between 50 and 60 per cent of housing in future developments — including affordable projects such as Residensi Wilayah or Residensi Madani — be reserved for locals with deep ties to the community. Discussions with DBKL had been going on for several years, but there were delays due to the pandemic and other factors, he said. "Some residents have had to move far away as they were forced to buy homes elsewhere. "We don't want this to happen. If possible, we want to retain residents in their original neighbourhood, where they are more comfortable living within their community." Fahmi said while many of the Persatuan Waris Kerinchi members now lived outside the area, there was hope the younger generation could return and own homes there. He was speaking to reporters after launching the Kampung Kerinchi Landmark (Mercu Tanda Kampung Kerinchi) at the KL Gateway Mall junction here today. The collaborative initiative involves DBKL, Persatuan Waris Kerinchi and Persatuan Kebajikan Tiga Luha, Tanjung Tanah Kuala Lumpur. "Apart from honouring the area's history, the landmark is also part of a long-term plan to strengthen Kampung Kerinchi's identity through planned development, official gazettement and special programmes for residents." Fahmi said there were plans to build at least one more landmark at another entrance to the area, as well as to gazette Kampung Kerinchi as a designated area. In previous efforts to empower locals, his ministry had worked with several companies, including Touch 'n Go Digital, to offer opportunities such as internships and open days for Kampung Kerinchi youth. These programmes, he said, aimed to ensure residents not only remained physically present in the area, but also gained exposure to the operations of major companies based there. Persatuan Waris Kerinchi chairman Baharuddin Hasan, 74, described the initiative as the realisation of a long-held hope. "Our hope as Kampung Kerinchi folk has always been to have a landmark that reflects its identity. "The village was established around the 1850s during the era of Sultan Abdul Samad, alongside Kampung Haji Abdullah Hukum. "We do not want this name and history to disappear amid the rapid development taking place here," the retired Tenaga Nasional Bhd employee said. Baharuddin, a fourth-generation Kampung Kerinchi resident, wishes for his family to continue living in the area for generations to come.

Ringgit rallies to six-week high at 4.18 on US Fed rate cut bets, solid local outlook

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — The ringgit strengthened to the 4.18 level versus the US dollar, marking its highest point in more than six weeks, buoyed by rising expectations of a United States (US) Federal Reserve (Fed) rate cut cycle and Malaysia's resilient macroeconomic outlook. The local note opened at 4.2045/2160 today compared to Wednesday's close of 4.2040/2085, before appreciating to 4.1865 as of 9.59am. The last time the ringgit traded at a similar high was on July 1, when it touched 4.1805. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said the ringgit's position around the 4.20 mark is both technically and psychologically significant for the market. 'While 4.20 is not a hard technical pivot in the strict chartist sense, it represents a symbolic benchmark for investor sentiment, particularly as the last sustained levels below this mark were seen in early July. 'A decisive break and hold below 4.20 would reinforce the view that the currency has entered a new appreciation phase,' he told Bernama. He attributed the ringgit's recent strength to market optimism that the Fed will deliver at least two rate cuts before year-end, with further easing likely to continue into 2026. This follows US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's call yesterday for the Fed to lower its benchmark rate by at least 1.5 percentage points, reinforcing market expectations of a more aggressive easing cycle, he said. Mohd Sedek said external factors are being complemented by domestic catalysts, particularly the 13th Malaysia Plan announcement, outlining clear policy directions, targeted investment incentives and sectoral development plans. These, he added, could bolster investor confidence, enhance capital inflows and strengthen the ringgit's fundamentals. 'Malaysia's steady gross domestic product growth, a resilient current account surplus and improving foreign investment momentum, particularly in high-value sectors such as electrical and electronics, renewable energy and data centres, provide a solid domestic foundation for currency appreciation,' he said. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid shared a similar view, describing the current ringgit level as 'more of a psychological marker' as sentiment turns increasingly positive. 'We now have two dissenters in the Federal Open Market Committee who favoured a rate cut in the July meeting, and the US labour market is showing signs of weakness, judging from the significant downward revision in US non-farm payrolls. 'Inflation is fairly stable, and the US Treasury has even suggested a 50-basis-point cut could happen in the September meeting. This is essentially ringgit-positive or dollar-negative,' he said. Looking ahead, Mohd Sedek forecasts the ringgit to strengthen to 4.10 by the end of 2025 and extend its uptrend towards 4.05 by the end of the first quarter of 2026. 'If the ringgit decisively holds below 4.20 in the coming weeks, the next levels to watch will be 4.18 and 4.15. A sustained move below 4.15 would confirm the structural shift towards our 4.05 target,' he added. — Bernama

Petronas will only import LNG from US at competitive prices, says Anwar

Reports previously said Malaysia had agreed that Petronas would buy US$3.4 billion of US LNG annually as part of a deal with Washington to cut its tariff rate. (Reuters pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Petronas will only proceed with liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from the US if they are competitively priced and match Malaysia's actual needs, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said today. Anwar said the country would import only what it needed, and that Malaysia already imports some LNG from the US. 'So Petronas's decision depends on our capacity and requirements. We will not import more than that, but we must also remember that we export as well,' he said during Prime Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat. 'If the price is competitive and the project is considered conventionally viable, it makes sense to import more, including from the US… Our (LNG) products are still in demand in Japan, Korea, and especially China.' The prime minister was responding to Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda-Muar), who asked how the national oil company could protect its profits if it made annual LNG purchases worth US$3.4 billion (RM14.39 billion), on top of current imports. The purchases are part of Malaysia's deal with Washington to cut its tariff rate, but come as Petronas faces various challenges including dwindling profits leading to a decision to cut about 10% of its workforce, as well as the handover of Sarawak's gas distribution role to state-owned Petros. Petronas president and group CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik said in June that Malaysia was set to be increasingly dependent on LNG imports in the next five years. Analysts have warned that profits could be hit by the handover of Sarawak's gas distribution role to Petros, part of the state's push for greater control over its energy resources. CreditSights estimates that Petronas's earnings could fall by up to 11%, although LNG revenues are expected to hold steady. However, Emir Research warned of a revenue loss of up to 30% if the shift significantly reshaped Petronas's Sarawak operations, potentially forcing plans to downsize and limiting future capital spending.
