Countdown festival of Yoga Day to be a grand affair in Hyd today
Hyderabad: Union Minister Kishan Reddy announced that International Yoga Day on June 21 will be celebrated grandly. To celebrate Yoga Day, a countdown festival will be held at LB Stadium in Hyderabad 24 hours before the IYD-2025, on June 20.
Speaking to the media after inspecting the preparations at the LB Stadium on Thursday, he mentioned that prominent yoga organizations, educational institutions, and social organizations will participate in these celebrations. The chief guests for the event include Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Verma, former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Union Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries Srinivasa Verma, and several Members of Parliament such as Dr. K. Lakshman, Krishnaiah, Etala Rajender, DK Aruna, Raghunandan Rao, as well as other legislators and members of the Legislative Council.
'Yoga contributes to both physical and mental well-being. Healthy individuals can better serve society and the country. For India to evolve into a developed nation by 2047, every person must be healthy. This way, we can achieve our goal of a developed India,' he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the yoga celebrations in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, with lakhs of people expected to join.

The event was conducted with an aim of entering the Guinness Book of Records, while Naidu already holds a record for cheating people across four terms as Chief Minister, Amarnath alleged. While Naidu mobilises funds for Amaravati, Amarnath said, North Andhra remains completely neglected but used for the CM's publicity stunts. 'It was only during YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's tenure North Andhra witnessed real development,' he reiterated, appealing to people to make the 'yuvatha poru' a success.

BENGALURU: Congress-governed Karnataka's proposed law to make dissemination of fake news online punishable with up to seven years in jail may have hit its first hurdle already, with confusion over why the Kannada and culture department should be the deciding authority on something within the information technology domain. Consultations are yet to happen on the draft bill," IT&BT minister Priyank Kharge said. Advocate Vinay Sreenivasa highlighted the potential for such a law to be misused without an effective mechanism. "The proposed bill is likely to cause suppression of civil liberties rather than contain fake news. It is shocking that the Congress govt hasn't followed the pre-legislative consultation policy brought by UPA II. Govt must immediately organise a consultation," he said. A leaked copy of the draft Karnataka Misinformation and Fake News (Prohibition) Bill, 2025 mentions the establishment of an authority to determine fake news and take appropriate action under the Kannada and culture department. Sources said the draft was still to be reviewed by the cabinet because there was no clarity on how the objective of combating fake news could be realistically achieved. Kharge's objection to some aspects of the proposed mechanism led CM Siddaramaiah to postpone the discussion till the next cabinet meeting, they said. Officials of the law and parliamentary affairs department said a scrutiny committee scanned the bill before the first draft was finalised. Internet Freedom Foundation, an independent agency, points out on its website that the govt hasn't yet sought public feedback on the proposed bill. The foundation wants the govt to drop criminal provisions in the bill and publish the full draft and background note for public consultation.

HAU student agitation: Govt panel seeks 2 yrs to meet demands, students allege threats
Hisar: The student agitation at Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) entered a critical phase on Saturday as a government-appointed committee held an eight-hour meeting with a 13-member student delegation. According to the students, while the committee agreed in principle to most of their demands, it requested a time frame of three months to two years for implementation and insisted that the protest be called off immediately. Students alleged that the meeting, attended by education minister Mahipal Dhanda, social justice and empowerment minister Krishna Bedi, Nalwa MLA Randhir Panihar, deputy commissioner Anish Yadav, superintendent of police Shashank Kumar Sawan, and SDM Jyoti Mittal, focused more on ending the protest than addressing their concerns. Speaking to journalists on Sunday, student representatives shared a detailed chronology of events, beginning with the initial unrest on May 12, the baton-charge on June 10, and developments thereafter. They submitted documentary evidence including medical reports, testimonies, and videos to support their claims. When students pressed for concrete action, the committee responded that the demands could not be fulfilled immediately due to legal and administrative procedures, and that it could take several months to two years. "We were told to trust the government and end the protest, but we clearly stated that the movement would continue until the demands are actually met," a student representative said. Students allege threats of FIR by DC, SP During Saturday's talks, students claimed they were pressured by the DC and SP with threats of FIRs. "We were told that we could face legal action. If raising our voice against injustice is a crime, then we are proud to be guilty," the students said defiantly. "If peaceful protest against an authoritarian VC is illegal, we will continue committing this 'crime'."
