Kishan Reddy accuses Congress of betraying BCs with its reservation policies
Hyderabad: In a sharp critique of the Congress Party's reservation framework, Union Minister G Kishan Reddy accused Congress of deliberately misleading Backward Classes (BCs) with its proposed 42 per cent reservation scheme for local bodies, which includes a 10 per cent quota for Muslims. Addressing the media in the national capital, Delhi, on Friday, the Minister referred to a precedent set by former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, who introduced a 4 per cent reservation for Muslims under the BC-E category during his tenure. This action was struck down twice by the High Court. Although Congress later obtained a stay from the Supreme Court to continue implementing the reservation, Reddy contends that this move was 'unconstitutional' and detrimental to the core BC groups. Kishan Reddy alleged that Congress inflated BC population figures by including 10 per cent Muslims in the claimed 56 per cent BC demographic, reducing actual BC numbers to 46 per cent. He said that the party's attempt to hike the Muslim reservation quota from 4 per cent to 10 per cent within the BC framework is labeled as unjust. Referring to the GHMC elections, where 34 per cent BC reservations allegedly benefited AIMIM candidates, not genuine BCs, he added. Reddy emphasized that reservations historically apply to castes engaged in traditional hereditary occupations and accused Congress of diverting these benefits for political appeasement. He warned that, under the guise of uplifting BCs, Congress was actually diminishing the 34 per cent BC quota to 32% after merging the 10 per cent Muslim component. The Minister highlighted the BJP's achievements in promoting BC leadership, including the appointment of BC members to the Union Cabinet and the granting of constitutional status to the BC Commission. He contrasted this with Congress's alleged failure to elevate BCs to Chief Minister or Prime Minister positions since independence. Kishan Reddy criticized the Congress leaders' remarks questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi's community. He clarified that Modi was included in the BC list in 1994 under the Congress-led government of Gujarat, which occurred before his political ascent. He also questioned the logic behind labeling several communities as 'converted' BCs, citing the inclusion of Vishwakarmas and the Lambada community in SC/ST lists over decades. Calling out Congress's decline in electoral relevance, Reddy asserted that the party had been rejected in key states and faced significant losses, including zero seats in Delhi. He attributed the recent personal attacks on Modi to frustration among Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Revanth Reddy. He said that the BJP is demanding that local body elections be conducted in line with Telangana High Court orders and that the proposed 42 per cent BC reservations exclude Muslim beneficiaries. Kishan Reddy urged Congress to clarify who stands to gain from this model and challenged Revanth Reddy to resign as Chief Minister in favor of a BC candidate.

Ponnam flays BJP for comments on 42% BC quota, says party always favoured capitalists
Senior Congress leader and Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar has criticised Telangana BJP leaders, particularly Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy, for 'commenting' against the government's decision to enhance the quota for Backward Classes (BCs) to 42% in proportion to their population. 'BJP was in the forefront in its efforts to dilute the benefits of BCs since the Mandal Commission days, as the party continues to harbour a 'feudalistic mindset'. The party always worked for the interests of capitalists and never served the interests of BC communities,' he told the media in New Delhi on Friday. He strongly condemned the remarks made by Mr. Kishan Reddy against the caste survey conducted by the Telangana government, in line with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's call for 'jitni hissedari, utni bhagedari' (benefits in proportion with population). 'BJP announced that a leader from the weaker sections would be made the Chief Minister whenever the party comes to power in Telangana. This promise comes at a time when they did not even make a BC MLA as leader of the legislature party,' he said, adding that Union MoS for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who is from the BC community, was removed from the post of Telangana BJP chief. 'N. Ramchander Rao, who fought against the Mandal Commission report, was recently made the State BJP president. And he is questioning the government's plan to give 42% quota to BCs. Everybody knows that BJP has won the elections in collusion with BRS,' he said, and recalled how Chief Minister A. Revanth reddy had requested Mr. Kishan Reddy to facilitate an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the interests of the weaker sections but to no avail. Caste organisations and those who are working for the cause of BCs would not allow BJP leaders into the State if the party continued to oppose BCs. 'We have adopted a wait-and-watch approach to ensure that 42% quota for BCs is implemented in the State. BJP leaders should not create obstacles in the process,' he said, and advised the BC leaders in BJP not to toe the line of Mr. Kishan Reddy and Mr. Ramchander Rao. He reiterated that Congress was committed to social justice and taking steps in that direction. 'What did BJP do for BC communities, compared to the efforts put in by Congress?' he asked.

Kishan Reddy bats for strengthening Indo-Peru ties
Hyderabad: Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy extended his greetings to the people of Peru on its 204th Independence Day. On Thursday, he was the chief guest at a celebration held in Delhi to honour this significant day. Kishan Reddy noted that Peru and India have maintained friendly relations since 1963, and these ties have strengthened in recent years. Both countries are committed to democratic values and share a mutual understanding on key international issues. He expressed happiness over their cooperative efforts to enhance harmony among South American countries. Peru, one of the most active trading nations in South America, is becoming an increasingly preferred partner for India. The trade relationship between the two countries is strengthening year by year. This collaboration goes beyond economic matters, encompassing cultural and traditional exchanges that foster a sense of brotherhood among their people. Notably, bilateral trade has reached $6 million. Steps are being taken to sign a free trade agreement to further bolster economic relations between the two nations, with negotiations currently ongoing. In an era when the world is advancing toward sustainable development, both India and Peru are focusing on achieving further growth in this area through joint efforts. Peru's rich mineral resources—including gold, silver, zinc, mercury, copper, lithium, rare earth elements, and iron ore—will support India's goals in eco-friendly energy initiatives. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, India has launched the National Critical Minerals Mission to achieve self-sufficiency in the critical minerals sector. In March 2025, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Geological Survey of India and Peru's Instituto Geológico Minero y Metallúrgico (INGEMMET). There are also opportunities for cooperation in fields such as space research, information technology, renewable energy, medicine, and agriculture. A team of Indian mining officials will participate in the 'Perumin-2025' program to be held in Arequipa, Peru, this September. The International Potato Centre, based in Peru, is planning to establish its South Asia regional office in Agra, symbolising the strong agricultural relations between the two countries. This centre is expected to benefit Indian farmers and enhance creativity in agricultural research. Kishan Reddy expressed gratitude to the Peruvian authorities for the opportunity to celebrate International Yoga Day at iconic sites such as Machu Picchu, the Carl Valley, and the Coricancha Temple.
