Fall in coal imports in FY25 led to forex savings worth ₹60,681 crore, says coal minister
India's coal imports in 2024-25 fell nearly 8% to 243.62 million tonnes, leading to foreign exchange savings of over ₹ 60,681.67 crore, said G. Kishan Reddy, the Union minister for coal and mines, on Monday. In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, the minister noted that the imports stood at 264.53 million tonnes in 2023-24. 'During 2024-25, India imported 243.62 million tonnes of coal, compared to 264.53 million tonnes in 2023-24. Due to the reduction of around 20.91 million tonnes in coal imports, there has been a forex savings of around ₹ 60,681.67 crore during 2024-25 compared to 2023-24,' Reddy said. The fall in imports comes amid the rise in domestic production. India's coal production reached 1.047 billion tonnes in the last fiscal year, nearly 5% higher than 997.83 million tonnes in 2023-24. The minister said most of the country's coal requirement is currently met through indigenous production and supplies. The ministry of coal has set an ambitious domestic coal production target of about 1.5 billion tonnes by 2029-30. The focus of the government is on increasing the domestic production of coal and reducing non-essential coal imports. The ministry of coal launched the Coal Logistics Plan and Policy in February 2024 to develop infrastructure for efficient coal evacuation, considering increased coal production projection by 2029-30," he said. The minister also outlined steps taken by the Centre to increase domestic coal production. He noted that, in addition to regular reviews by the coal ministry to expedite the development of coal blocks, the government has taken several regulatory measures in the past few years, including the enactment of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2021. State-run Coal India Ltd (CIL) has adopted a number of measures to increase coal production, including the adoption of new and modern technologies like mass production technologies (MPT) with the deployment of continuous miners, longwalls, and highwalls wherever feasible, he said, adding that digital transformation has been implemented on apilot scale in seven of its mega mines.

SCCL has initiated action for developing infrastructure for the evacuation of coal, like coal handling plants (CHPs), crushers, mobile crushers, pre-weigh-bins, etc.," Reddy said.

Kacheguda-Jodhpur service long-cherished dream of Hyderabad Rajasthanis, says Vaishnaw
HYDERABAD: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy on Saturday flagged off a new daily express train service from Hyderabad (Kacheguda) to Jodhpur (Bhagat Ki Kothi) in Rajasthan. The new train (17605), starting Sunday, will depart from Kacheguda at 11:50 pm and arrive at Bhagat Ki Kothi at 8 pm the following day. On the return journey, the train (17606) will leave Bhagat Ki Kothi at 10:30 pm and reach Kacheguda at 3:40 pm. Speaking on the occasion, Ashwini Vaishnaw said that a daily train service between Hyderabad and Jodhpur had been a long-cherished dream of the Rajasthani community living in Hyderabad. He noted that the service could not be launched earlier due to infrastructure constraints. However, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country has witnessed significant progress in rail infrastructure, including the laying of new tracks and construction of new stations. This, he said, has enabled the launch of the direct daily service. Kishan Reddy emphasised that Telangana has seen unprecedented infrastructure development in recent years. 'Forty railway stations in Telangana are being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Of these, the Prime Minister recently inaugurated the upgraded stations at Begumpet, Warangal, and Karimnagar,' he said. He also noted that the state's entire rail network has now been electrified. The event was attended by South Central Railway (SCR) General Manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava, BJP Telangana president N. Ramachander Rao, and other dignitaries. Earlier in the day, Vaishnaw met with officials to discuss strategies for doubling the capacity of railway operations in the Hyderabad region. Along with Kishan Reddy, he reviewed plans to further enhance rail infrastructure and connectivity across Telangana. Highlighting Hyderabad as a focal point for railway development, Vaishnaw instructed the SCR general manager to increase the number of trains operating in the city from 600 to 1,200 per day. 'With the ongoing redevelopment of Secunderabad railway station, officials have been directed to plan a multi-hub model, where several stations across the city will serve as regional connectors—linking the east, west, north, and south,' he added.

Union Minister Kishan Reddy urges Telangana CM to support renewable energy projects
Hyderabad, July 17 (UNI) Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy has written to Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, urging the state government to extend its cooperation in setting up major renewable energy projects across the state. The Minister stated that Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) under the Ministry of Coal, particularly Coal India Limited (CIL) and Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited (NLCIL), are prepared to invest nearly Rs 10,000 crore in Telangana over the next three years for the development of solar and wind power plants, pumped storage projects (PSPs), and battery energy storage systems (BESS). In his letter, Kishan Reddy explained that the Central government was ready to identify zones with high solar potential and develop renewable energy infrastructure in those areas. The CPSUs are also looking to introduce advanced battery storage systems to ensure grid stability, and conduct feasibility studies for implementing pumped storage projects that can provide balancing power to the grid. The Minister proposed the formation of joint ventures between the Telangana State Public Sector Undertakings and Central Government coal companies to speed up project implementation and enhance local economic benefits. However, he noted that these ambitious plans require the support of the state government, especially in the areas of land acquisition and allotment. Highlighting Telangana's potential in renewable energy generation, Kishan Reddy said the Centre is committed to supporting the state's green development goals with sincerity. He stated that these projects would contribute significantly to the economic development of Telangana and position the state as a key player in India's transition to a sustainable energy future. The Union Minister requested Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to take a special initiative and extend full cooperation for the successful execution of these projects. He underlined that a coordinated approach between the state and Central governments is essential to achieving long-term goals related to energy security, environmental protection, and self-reliance.
