A Virginia Democrat hunts for votes in rural pockets where MAGA has strengthened its grip
The former congressional representative, now the Democratic nominee in the race to be Virginia's next governor , posts videos online of herself sitting in a car on an interstate highway that goes up and down the Appalachian Mountains. She has toured a small, family-owned oyster shucking and packaging operation along a quiet boat haven on the northern neck of Virginia. And last month, the nominee held a news conference at a small pharmacy in an agrarian hamlet outside of Richmond.

Virginia Democrats speak out against Winsome Earle-Sears
ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Virginia Democrats made their voices heard that they do not support the policies of Winsome Earle-Sears, and don't think she's the right choice for Governor. Speakers at Tuesday's press conference included Delegate Sam Rasoul and candidates for Virginia's 40th and 41st House Districts, Donna Littlepage and Lily Franklin. They said they were against Earle-Sears' support of federal tax bills that would cut Medicare and lead to job losses and local hospital closures. It would also slash funding for education. 'Chasing History: The Race for Governor' 'Having the fourth-highest Medicaid utilization rate in Virginia in this district, and having a school district that is so reliant on making sure we are taking care of the most vulnerable students,' Rasoul said. 'We clearly need leadership that's going to stand by Roanokers and that's going to stand by Virginians.' The guest speakers instead voiced their support for Representative Abigail Spanberger. One-on-One with Winsome Earle-Sears, the Republican nominee for governor 'She understands what's happening to Medicaid, and she understands we're going to have to look on how we spend those dollars further, and how we keep as many people insured as we can,' Littlepage said. 'She's got a lot of focus on lowering drug costs to individuals, but if she lowers drug costs to the state, that creates dollars that can be used to backfill some of what we're losing.' Roanoke residents also voiced their concerns with Earle-Sears. 'The fact that she stood up cast a vote against the right to contraception, that's unconscionable to me,' Roanoke resident Sarah Goodman said. 'I can't fathom how a woman can do that.' In response, Earle-Sears claimed she is pro-worker and a firm supporter of children's education. 'I am for all forms of education, and my opponent says, 'One type of education only, unless you have the ability that you can make a different decision,'' Earle-Sears said. 'I want everybody to have options when it comes to schooling, so that would be public school, private school, parochial school, homeschool, hybrid, whatever you as the parent wants.' BRISTOL, Va. (WFXR)- Lieutenant Governor and gubernatorial candidate Winsome Earle-Sears said, 'the media is lying to you,' in response to recent polls that show her opposition, former Virginia Representative Abigail Spanberger, in the lead. Earle-Sears said internal polls are 'neck and neck.' Virginia Democrats speak out against Winsome Earle-Sears A poll released by Decision Desk HQ on August 1 showed the republican nominee down by nine points to Spanberger, 45.2% to 36.0%.
